View Full Version : Sorry, but a complaint :(

I don't know if this has been discussed but after a while away, I couldn't help but notice a couple of changes. And I have to say one thing... I hope I don't sound bitchy but the right click blocker is really freakin' annoying.
As a web developer I could name a dozen reasons why they're useless but they also reduce the accessability of the site, making it harder to use. I can't right click to copy text to quote for example. Or use my scroll wheel which I use when reading posts - click it and pull down to slowly scroll the page... I've tried to do it at least 30 times in the 10 minutes I've been here.
I read the sticky in site news and I gotta say, that right click blocking is the most useless way to stop people from saving pictures.
All blocking right-click does, in my professional opinion, is reduce the usability of the site and provide a general nuisance to the users. Anyone who would do wrong with our pictures certainly knows how to get them with or without our consent - right click blocking just irritates them, too. That's all.
Well, it also: disables mouse gestures, stops me from right clicking to open a link in a new window, keeps me from copying and pasting text, scrolling the window with my wheel, and and and.
I realize its my opinion and this'll probably get moved but I feel really strongly about this - it's web design 101 stuff. Sorry but it's a pain in the ass to even browse the forums :(
Edit - Yes, I'm aware there are keystrokes to do these things. My point is that it's a nuisance to all users and, to screw the few you damn the many - and ineffectively, no less. the only way to keep a picture safe is to not post it. Period. Annoying thousands of good, loyal users to simply stall the few bad people is not a good choice.

I agree with you hun,
All it does is make the site a PITA to use if you like to right click posts and open in a new window like I do.
I may sound like a B-I-T-C-H here but really... If you do not want anyone to know you are a crossdresser then do not post your pictures on the internet.

I respectfully ask that you just work with us for a while until we explore some options. Please? This is temporary for right now.....
And although you know all the tricks, everyone else may not, let's not make it easier by telling them HOW to do it, OK? Thanks.....
EDIT: Why not offer your services to help the forum figure something out? You both sound like you know what you are doing, and instead of complaining, your help woukld be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, it's a little annoying, but at least they're trying to do something to help protect the privacy of members here. No, it's not a perfect solution, but it's an attempt.

Yes I see, they are trying to protect out privacy.
But lets be realistic here. Ths is after all a public forum.
You post a picture of yourself then you are pretty much going public and coming out if you will.
Sorry to say there is really nothing they can do.

Why is it when one of the users speaks up about something they get " you should be thankfull for what the admids do" type of responces? It's not that we are not thankfull it because something SUCKS on the site! It is as simple as if your going to post to a public forum you run that risk..... I listed how to put your name over your pics.
Giving out my name & address is invading my privacy but someone swiping a pic from a public forum well is no diffrent then all the people that swipe pictures for thier screen savers or to fill my mailbox with "look at these" emails that we all send to our friends & family.
At LEAST get rid of that "bing" & pop up box! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE WITH CHERRIES ON TOP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blocking right click doesn't do anything to keep people from taking pics if that's what you're trying to do. It's as easy as taking a screenshot of your desktop if you're a lazy creep. I realize it keeps the technically illiterate at bay for a while, but I agree with Stephanie that it's more of an annoyance than a deterent.

... They can be so annoying.
One producer I knew said it nicely: Isn't technology wonderful (when it works).
Not saying anything, just observing in passby. LOL

Well so much for members not aiding those that think it's ok to take pictures from members only forums on this site. Instead, what do you do, you whinge about things set in place to try and protect you. Well you can have your right click back, I've removed the script. But, I'm telling you this on behalf of all the staff here, if we see any pictures elsewhere on open forums etc, we will do NOTHING about it this time. We won't spend hours searching the net for a member that put hundreds (no thats not exagerating either) of your pictures on public photo albums for the whole world to see and get them taken down, we won't act on complaints about pictures taken from here again.
Size7, why is it you only seem to ever post when the shit hits the fan? Do you have nothing better to do than get into arguements with the staff of this forum?
Well, thank you to those that did appreciate what we were doing, we know about all the work arounds, but a lot did not. Just don't come complaining to us next time someone takes pictures out of our members only forums and puts them all over the internet for everyone else to see.

On the whole... I hadn't even noticed that right click was disabled, and like a few million other internet users, it makes bugger all difference to me if it has.
Honestly.. If you dont want you pictures to turn up unexpectedly... Leave your camera alone in the first instance. Nothing's sacred. public exposure, getting caught, getting outed... It's a risk that comes with the lifestyle. You smoke, you risk cancer, you drive you risk being rear ended, you dress, you risk exposure. Life sucks I'm afraid, get a hard hat.
If the moderators and administrators choose to play about with settings... Thats up to them, they run the place. From what I can see, they're trying to improve things, so.... in the words if the infamous angler "If you knows' of a better 'ole...."

I do appreciate of your doings, the best one was to alert CNET about inet abuse of stealing the content. Worst one right-click blocking. I do not know why it turns you angry to learn that there is not technical solution to human abuses. And why you always appear so sure that you are infallable when you introduce something. Consult us. We also participate here - this site is our work too. We all provide content and police postings. I also suggested DanaJ about possible course of action in spite that she slapped me three times privately. People here got lay about posting their private things publicly. We became renowned about being supportive to the subculture. This IS A PUBLIC SITE and disclaimer has been set and present since I've came to forum some time ago. I am not sure where it is now but I know that it has been there. Many here are avid browsers and this is not 70ties or 80ties or first half of 90ties when people have been mainly uneducated with work on computers. Maybe some senior members or non tech persons have difficulty here and there which is logical - this is not exactly their technology. There are some more subtle technical workarounds for pictures but there is no 100% technical solution. And introducing something shall be seen from different viewpoints not just implement because someone finds it cool temporary workaround. Concept of Internet denies copy protection. Internet IS the ULTIMATE COPY MACHINE. This is built in its fabric. You can do exactly as you say NOTHING when it comes to someones tools to copy pictures. As long as you can browse them you can copy them in this or that way. Content to be copied is not only with pictures, our writeups, polls, findings and discoveries is significant content of intellectual property value. There are some global actions that may help us on the long run but Information Society is not yet in the phase to yield some valuable outcome.
Let me stand correct, you shall be active to react on abuses. But so we shall help. For one, everyone shall understand above fact that this is public site. For two abuses are going to be present - thus we shall fight it - with everything at our disposal surely more collectively. For three we shall listen more to each other. There are fine people here - we are not idiots. And you are not lonely group of moderators and admins. For the rest we all own the content here, being in producing or maintaining thus it is our members responsibility as much as it is yours as moderators, admins and content maintainers. Script or not script, it doesnot bother me here. You introduced script I have introduced remedy to the script for my own comfort thus it is transparent to me. I have warned you that it is easy to workaround this. You slapped me for being honest and open.
What really bothers me here are bad feelings. We are smart people and last we need here is to create bad feelings. I do appreciate commitment and time spent here trying to solve problems and I want to tell you that you are not alone in this. You shall have all our member support. Do reach out. But by no means this shall be unilateral excercize of ones power or threatening the members. By default members shall not be treated as hostile. Now that we all have bad taste in our mouth, lets do some teeth brusing and lets form a decent copyright policy for the material here. I want to see sticky with disclaimer clearly visible. If you wish to protect me, you and us, use right tools. Create poll, lets openly discuss what is our stand on this issue. Lets go back on the right track and remember lessons learned.
Julie, as usuall we need some of your moderators wisdom here.
Love. Stelli.

Let me just correct you on one point. The picture gallery is NOT a public forum, it is for MEMBERS only, therefore, not viewed by everyone on the internet. If you log out, you will find that it is a restricted area.
As for copyright, there is a clause in our Rules/FAQ.
Regarding consulting everyone about everything we do, would you like me to paste all the PM's the staff recieved regarding disabling the right click function? We run this forum to the best of our ability, the right click may not have been full proof, I know that, you know that, but a hell of a lot of members do not know that. I was working on just disabling the right clicking of pictures only, but in the mean time, I put that script in until I made a different one.
What doesn't help is the constant flow of members complaining about trivial things such as a function being disabled. We put up keyboard shortcuts to help, just because you can't use the mouse, doesn't mean that it isn't possible to do. It's a case of educating yourself on how your pc actually works.
But with all this constant bickering going on and it seems the ones who have complained are the ones who know about the work arounds anyway (the point of that was?) I'm just not going to bother.

Thanks for clarifications Tamara. I bet you do the best. No hard feelings about it at least from my side. You did the right thing. But gosh can you understand that you have really bad attitude about all of this. Your attitude causes bickering not your tech solutions.

OK, I belong to other forums, it never even crossed my mind when I joined to say tell them that I didn't like that they did this or that, change it because it causes me inconvience. I just accepted it as a small price to pay for the community and information of that forum.
Well, anyway - as Tamara has said, right-clicking has been restored, everything is as it was. Your right mouse buttons have been freed from tyranny! :D
