Cosmetic counter etiquette question for GGs

After my MAC makeover I've been asked a question, which to be honest the GGs here are probably more knowledgible about.

If you go to MAC (or other cosmetic counters at department stores) they don't charge you for the makeover, but I'd heard from GGs that it's customary to buy at least two items from the make-up artist, since she or he is on commission.

Does this sound correct? And if the make-up artist does more work (i.e. a full make-over rather than just redoing your eye shadow) is there an expectation that you'll buy a bit more.

Well I can honestly say I have only had a makeover when getting glamour shots done...the pics came out good but I hated how much makeup they put on me. I have never had one done in a department store because it always seems like they cake it on and I prefer doing my own. With any service I would say if you like what they have done then the purchase of the items is not out of the realm but if you do not like it at the store why would you buy it? Still a tip is not out of the realm either if you like what they have done but do not want to buy.

I have always bought at least something if they spent a significant amount of time working with me. If all they do is put one product on you though -- eyeshadow or lipstick or whatever -- you shouldn't feel like you have to buy it.

Seems to me, that some places (like Clinique, for example) have a purchasing policy when doing a makeover. I suppose the best policy is simply to ask.

Otherwise, maybe purchase something, but try to make it a useful item. I have boxes and makeup bags full of things I will never get around to using...

So much makeup, only one face!

I've had one make-over done at a counter and I had to pay a deposit of £5.00. This was then taken off any product that I purchased. I think if you aren't happy with the products they used, then you shouldn't have to purchase anything, but to be honest, most always do a great job and I just think it's nice to purchase a couple of things

I usually buy one thing if they take the time ect....and make notes of the colors ect if I like the results to copy later. I too have soooooo much makeup...but still like to check out new colors and or products.

I know most make up counters will do a complete make over if you purchase up to a certain amount of make up. In know up here in Canada, the MAC store requires that you buy $50 worth of make up if they spend an hour on a full make over. it is not a 'lesson', just an application. I also know that some make up counters like Dior/Clinique/Lancome will also do a full make over if you buy that same minimum.

But marla is right, if you just test one sample you are not obligated to buy anything.

Always best to ask first.
