I know that 2014 is not officially over yet, we still have 2 and 1/2 months left of it. But I feel like 2014 has truly been the year that being transgender is finally being brought to the forefront. Here are some of the major advances for the trans community that I have noticed in 2014. Some have been more localized, and some are more nationalized.
1. Laverne Cox and the Transgender Tipping Point.
2. L.A. Pride but the T first and our annual event was the TLGB Pride, which took place in early June.
3. The Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center was renamed the L.A. LGBT Center in late May.
4. The L.A. AA meeting directory used to denote meetings as gay, marked with a "G". The latest meeting directory, which is the June 2014 edition, officially denotes meetings marked with a "G" as "LGBT - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender." The word transgender is officially part of the Los Angeles AA meeting directory.
5. Amazon Prime aired Transparent - a show about a transgender woman and her family.
If anyone can think of any other major accomplishments for the transgender community that occurred this year, whether it is something that happened in your local area, state, or nationally, please feel free to add them.
