    Is there a problem?

Do we have a problem? Just received an email from Zappas advertising different types of women's shoes. In small print at the top was the comment, "We know all about dressing. Har har har." Never purchased anything from them. Has this happen to anyone else on the forum?

If it was from "Zappas" yes, you may have a problem. If it came from "Zappos", probably not. The latter is a well known clothing company. The former may well be a spammer.

I have a tendency to forward material that may be a phishing or other attack to the security department of the targeted business/agency on the way to the bottomless bit bucket.

A few of these impersonation type emails have arrived in my inbox.

Another favourite trick is pointing the real link to a different place to what is advertised in the visible text, for example, one apparently pointing to something legitimate like a bank but actually pointing to something like spamalot.porn or some such thing (fictitious address).

Never follow links in emails....even if you're mostly sure that it came from a legitimate source. Always go to the website by normal methods such as a Google search link.

The part that bothered me the most was the comment about dressing. This is the only site where I am in the public eye and there is no way to connect that to the other email address. Had a concern that cd.com had been hacked.

Do you google CD-friendly sites? On-line CD boutiques? Google will target advertising towards your tastes based on your googling patterns. My suggestion: get a second browser (Firefox, Chrome, whatever) separate from the main browser you use. Set that browser to permanently not remember your history and not store cookies. Then if you have a google/gmail account, never sign into it from that browser.

I agree with Jean. I use Firefox and have it set to delete any history. If I go to JC Penny and peruse some dresses, and, then go to other sites or email accounts I'll start getting reminders about the dresses I looked at. It would be the same with Barnes and Noble. Ebay too! You really cannot escape it. But, once you sign off a computer session it will all go away.

I do get some emails from unknown sources that I delete without opening or I check the source before opening. Sometimes I may get email solicitations from eBay sellers who I may have bought from on eBay, who are trying to get your future business without paying fees to eBay on future sales.

If you get an email from your bank concerning the status of your account I would not open it at all. Close out the link and contact them directly. If there is a problem with an account, the service rep will be able to tell you.

As to this site I haven't gotten any indications its security has been breached.

    Laura,

Turn off "cookies". Ever notice when you shop on Amazon or just google search something, then fine advertisement in or in the side of your social media or other web links? Marketing. Your shopping habits are being tracked and companies are using this data to entice you to return or look at other products that they offer.

There is a solution. Disconnect you computer from an Internet connection. And go to the brick and mortar shops.

Its not from this site I'm sure.
Its from your browsing history or google searches.
I never follow links from a site I don't know or from an email.

could be cookies from you internet exploring Laura although your "email" in question does seem to be a bit specific, Do you know about opening the header on it? do a search and figure out how to open the header on your email and see where the email came from, ok?

Doing that will show you the location, the ip address the email came from and yes its worth doing, you can get a physical address that way too possibly. It would likely be just a general location though like a city.

Thanks for all your comments. I always use private windows in Safari so hopefully that will not be traced back. Glad no one else has been involved.

Definetly a possibility, I get tons of ads while on legitimate Web sites about stuff I've viewed that's completely unrelated (at the time) like heels, cosmetics, skinny jeans 😉

    I love cookies:

    I HATE you, cookies:

Almost all the ads I see when browsing the web are for dresses at fullbeauty.com. They're very distracting. Better that than ads for junk I don't want, in my opinion.
