My laptop isn't up to it - and that's a good thing. That's one fewer time-waster I have to deal with.

This is the first I've heard of Second Life, believe it or not. It sounds like a more elaborate version of The Sims.
    I have a birth defect: a Y chromosome.

There's been a series of articles about it in the media recently. Colleges and businesses are setting up shop in SL to get publicity. Supposedly some people are making big money out of it in some way that I don't understand.
There has also been talk about taxing income earned in SL - figure that out.

They are looking into the gambling in SL too. LL (Linden Labs) has now removed casinos from the search function. I can kind of see the point, sure you are gambling Linden Dollars (L$) but L$'s can be bought and sold for real $$$. So it's real online gambling.

I ceratinly am not making any money in there beyond a bit of dwell (w)horing, but that is not even worth it anymore.

To really make money you need to be a good clothing designer, scripter, builder, land barron, better yet a combination of builder/scripter.

    LOL !

From posts here and comments to me in RL, it seems that people are either susceptible to the "immersion" or not. When I am in there I *am* my avatar and she is an extension of me..in fact I'm gradually tuning her appearance to reflect a persona I would like to project in RL but which is completely impossible. When I am at a location chatting it "feels" to me that I am in a real place talking to real people in a real place.

For those who don't "get" it this must seem sad...a grown man manipulating a little on-screen character and typing furiously into a PC keyboard. In my defense, I also get immersed in a good story and can get choked up watching a good film..both can seem very real to me at the time. SL is just a powerful and interactive extension of this.

I'll meet you in the shrinks waiting room

Previous generations got immersed in all sorts of things - collecting beetles, toy trains, putting ships into bottles, golf, and all sorts of other foolishness. I don't see any difference here.

Second Life really is a second life

You can buy land (actually lease it) you can make a store. You can sell stuff, houses, clothes, scripts (programs) and animations. Most of the big money makers are landlords, they have land to sell and rent it to people for stores or residents.

You can get a job, open a store or club and hire people.

To own land you have to be a paying member $9 a month or about $6 if you pay a year in advance. But you can rent land and put up a store or house with the free account, which I still have. $9 is about $2,000L. A good skin sells for more. Houses for hundreds or thousands, flex hair or wings $200 or more. So it would not take many sales to pay the monthly fee.

If you are good a building and making clothes, scripting, animation, and making hair you can make lots of money. But you have to put a lot of time in it. Good scripter’s can get jobs at Linden.

Some people have quit their RL jobs because the income in SL was more! This is not the norm and I suspect it would not happen too often. Most people stay in SL for a few weeks and get bored. (My guess from the turnover of tipping customers I get at the club.)

So the big sellers are clothes, flex hair, buildings and scripts, animations, land and renting land.

There is so much free stuff you almost do not need to buy. But the good flex hair and clothes, skins, you can not get free. I have a number of really nice buildings I got free, vehicles, (motorcycles, cars, UPS truck, bicycles, etc.)
All this free stuff is making the vendors upset. Maybe Linden will do something about it. Then there is the people that get the free stuff and sell it to newbees and welcome spots and sandboxes, if caught they can be suspended.

For example I made a cuckoo clock. It tells the correct SL time and the pendulum swings. I am working on the scripts to make it cuckoo on the hour and half hour and to tick tock I was told it would be a big seller once finished. I also am making paintings for homes. I am taking photos of all my original art and making paintings in SL with them, frames and all. They look great. I have made wings, a devil tail and am making a submarine. The people with land like to fill their homes with stuff. That is where you get your good sales.

SL is not a game as such it really is a Second Life. I meet a real Japanese Geisha. She had an interpreter and worked at a tea house in SL and in RL. She tipped me over $400L when I was dancing!

I have chatted with people in England, South America, France, Canada, China and more. It is really interesting.

So SL is what you make it that is why it is called Second Life.

Yeah, I got loads of freebie clothes/shoes for my wardrobe and am having great fun putting outfits together...but so far no decent flex hair. I got freebie flex hair but my scalp shows through when I shake my head...just like a cheapo wig in RL

Tonite, I'm suffering from SL withdrawal. It is down for an upgrade and they are having problems getting it back up

    You can fix that

You get a posing stand. Stand on it /ao off, and edit the hair. You can then move the hair around to get rid of the bald spot. Also you can get into appearance and make your head smaller or a different shape, ie less egg shape or more egg shape . You might have to do both to fix it. When you get prim hair you usually need to adjust it anyway. They might not tell you that with free hair. You can get a posing stand just about anywhere there is free stuff.

    Hiya all,

I got some cool flexi hair now, big improvement. Dina...I would test your posin stand but I'm away from home right now and this laptop is not SL capable. I'm SL cold turkey with another few days to go Be back next week if that is any use.

My name in SL, BTW is the same as here...except substitute numeral "1" for each letter "i"..that is L1l1th, my friends call me L1

I just got into SL recently. I haven't interacted with too many people yet and I have not bought anything. I did make myself some raccoon ears and a raccoon tail that I wear around. I also made a rubber penguin that says "I want some fish" when you touch him. I like it because I can express myself creatively without having to use any real-life tools such as paint brushes, carving tools, etc.

I haven't made anything yet, just explored, socialized, danced and more . Also accumulated tons of pretty outfits.

I've been amazed at the amount of artistic creativity in there. I've walked through enchanted forests with squirrels running through trees that wave in the breeze while shedding a few leaves, dived to the bottom of seas and found coral reefs full of colorful fish, stood on the shore and watched whales basking as the sun sets, explored gothic castles with walls lined with rich tapestries, played magic drums in elven villages....and all the time I wonder who has spent the time to make all of this amazing stuff.

BTW, if you can make pets you may be onto a winner. I saw cats, dogs and dragons for sale somewhere at L300 each.

Thanks, I can log in to SL from here, but then this laptop quickly slows to a standstill...taking several minutes to render a scene. I'll give the stand a workout next week.

Is there much of a learning curve with building stuff? I'm asking because I may have a go when I've played around some more. I do have experience in software development so I'm hoping that might give me a headstart, although I'm aware that a different skill set will probably be needed.

There is a bit of a learning curve. If you have ever used any sort of CAD program the controls will seem more intuitive. I would recomend you catch one of the many free building classes. Look for an introductory one. Search (the search is working) for "building" in events but limit it to education.

There are also some changes coming, I am not sure how it will effect the basic tools,as it is more of an advanced item (sculpted prims). As is it now you must build everything out of basic geometric shapes the twist and bend them into the forms you want.

I've been in Second Life for almost 3 months now and I'm totally hooked. It's been a joy having a female avatar and "living" as a woman. The Transgender Resource Center in SL has been extremely helpful to me - it's all worth it just for that alone! If you're in SL, please look me up (Devin Dinzeo). Lots of fun to have shopping, exploring, or just hanging out at the t-friendly dance clubs. Hope to see everyone in-world! :-)

See ya there next week !

I was just wondering, though, why the involvement in TG ? Surely in SL you *are* completely female...so why do you need to seek out t-friendly places ? Why not just be a woman ? Something I'm missing here ?

Cool, I have used CAD stuff before. I'll go to some SL classes. Thanks.

    Who is hooked!

Oh just because I am exploring until I cannot keep my eyes open is not hooked or is it.

I have made lots of stuff including a working clock and a cuckoo clock. Am still working on the cuckoo every hour and half hour. The script is a bit more that I expected. But the cuckoo clock tells time SL and the pendulum swings.

In any case IM me for my SL name. I have a job dancing and cannot have it know that I am a guy (of sorts)!

It is great to be a girl in SL. It has brought me to the conclusion I am a bit more comfortable with being a woman than I thought. Cannot let my wife find out. I have to Play after she goes to sleep as it is.) Just wish I really looked like that, (not that big of boobs though!)

Be a girl in SL and deny you are a boy in RL or be yourself TG in SL.

Since I have a job dancing I have to pretend I am a female in RL. Some one did figure it out or make a good guess at a transformation site. I made the mistake of saying I like to see boys turn into girls. Not sure if the other person was a real girl or boy. I suspect from the language she is either a girl that likes Transformations or a TG woman.

The transformation places are not just gender like Siren Song. They are all kinds of transformations. I like all forms of transformations. So that is why I was looking at the place.

Second life thread should be a sticky

It is a great way to talk about it. There is lots to do and learn there and college business are setting up shop there.

It is not a game it is more than that.

I started out as a "regular" female, but it got complicated very quickly as I started getting very close to friends (both male and female) and guys started hitting on me in the straight clubs. I wasn't comfortable with deceiving anyone, so I ended up revealing that I was TG in real life (RL). It was well received and all of them are still my friends. Overall, being up front about being TG in SL/RL has made things simpler for me (I now have it in my SL profile). I know most don't choose that route, which I respect. Just a personal choice for me.

I had to uninstall SL because it was causing too many problems with my computer. Since both my kids also use the computer they were beginning to question why I had to shutdown the computer so often and why it would suddenly slow down. I will be gettin gmy own computer by the Fall so I will have to patiently wait until then. I was having a lot of fun while I was there and building a longer list of male friends. One contacts me by e-mail from time to time and I don't have the heart to tell him I'm TG. I still act in character when I talk to him. I would assume that everyone on SL would realize that this is a make-believe world and that there most likely is not a parallel between SL and RL. Anyone read the "Otherland" series by Tad Williams?

I am 6'1", I do not CD, no point in it. My wife does not like this and I keep out of sight. So SL is my ONLY release.

Yes I have had guys hit on me (even have had sex,) oh that is out now. My profile says "do not ask about Real life I am in SL to escape from RL." People are good about that if anyone suspects I am a guy I have not had any hint of it except that one time. Never at the club while dancing.
