I have searched for "Voice" through this forum, but found nothing about the many CDs, books, DVDs books, etc.. on the internet dealing with feminizing our voices. Has anyone tried any of these, and if so, did they help?
I have a very resonant voice, and even when I bring it down, it still sounds very masculine.
I agree with many of you who on a different thread claimed voice was the biggest problem.

Well its not a problem unless you make it one... My voice sucks but when out enfemme I just talk quieter.. And I tried making it sound more fem but gave up... And this works for me and its a cheap solution.. No one has said anything about it or me... But I really don't care if they know I'm a guy in a dress... Their problem not mine!! Lol

I haven't bought any books or tapes to help with this, but i have played with trying to make my voice sound like a woman, just to see if i could do it.
Some of the things i have noticed, is woman tend to talk with a lot of range, like they can say one word like "Hi" and can incorporate 4 or more tones just to say it, where men its fast and 1 tone, woman do this a lot, men talk very mono tone. Right off the bat, after playing with it, i realized, that you have to find a personality with the voice, i mean talk in the same sort of pattern, starting out you switch a lot, and that makes it sound fake, a lot of practice and a personality will emerge. finding a personality while talking is hard unless you are talking in real conversations with real energy behind what you are saying, if you know someone you can talk to and practice with, i think that would help a lot. I gave up on it, because of the work you need to do with it, and having a voice doesnt matter to me, i dont want to go out, but i played with it for a while. Biggest mistake i think doing this is raising tone and having a higher mono tone voice LoL raise that tone just a bit if you have a low voice, and work on lots of range, up and down the scale, and with a lot more feeling into what you say.

This is a good subject. But Karen is quite right - in my case, I make a point to talk quietly, and that seems to be half the battle. If I try to futz with my voice beyond that, I sound stupid. So, I figure I will just scale the volume down a bit.
When en femme, I guess I look like a girl who works out and who as a voice like Kathleen Turner.
Pay attention to HOW women speak vs. the way men speak. There are plenty of women that have lower voices than men. (Cher, Kathleen Turner, etc.) In your/our favor, a lower voice in a woman is considered appealing. Women tend to speak more from their throat, and many don't open their mouths real wide when they speak. Consequently, they have less of that "rumbly" resonance that comes from mens' chests.
A man might say, "I need to go to the store," or, "I'm going to the store."
A woman might say, "I'm thinking about going to the store," or, "I'd like to go to the store...."
The differences are subtle, but if you listen closely, they're there.
When en femme, I make my eyes and gaze and jaw softer, and I do the same with my voice. I don't do one of those drag-queen-sounding falsettos, but I make my breath and voice softer... even a little whispery... It seems to work well enough.

Do a search for "TS Voice Training Programs". You should find a lot of sites that have software/DVD/CD training. Also check with some of the colleges that have TS audio clinics.
I don't know how good self training by using purchased programs may be, but they say practice pratice practice, makes perfect (hopefully).
A former member here has almost finished her transition, and she employed a voice coach to help her. She sounds great.

I just talk softer and I raise the pitch a little that feels comfortable(not to over do it).

Because Stephenie starts work in September, I have aranged for voice therapy at our local university. Evidently they do this quite a lot. They seemed very familiar with the problem. Right now, I do what Karren Hutton does and talk as softly as I can. I agree with her that it really doesn't matter, because that's just who I am now.
I am going to do the voice therapy because I will be seeing patients on a daily basis and I really don't want to scare them too much. I will let you all know how it goes.

BTW, I have both of the two major voice tapes, and they both stress the tremedous amount of practice needed for this task. It is similar to learning a foriegn language or learning to play a musical instrument. Both of these tasks are perfectly possible for almost anyone, but both take time and effort.

Did anyone else have trouble getting those genderlife videos to play? I install the DVD@ccess program like they say, then I get a file not found message.

The course explains that unlike a female, a male vocal cord thickens during puberty and once this takes place it cannot be undone. Indeed, until puberty, a male voice is quite similar to a female voice, just think about those church choirs that are composed entirely out of young boys.
However by exercising specific muscles in our throat we should eventually be able to emulate a female voice to such extent that it sounds genuine. Speaking with a female voice requires that we generate our voice not in our mouth, but deep in our throat. Once that voice is generated, it has to be modulated to the correct sound with practice. It is indeed similar to learning to play a music instrument.
I can't emulate a passable female voice yet, but I keep working on it...

This is off topic, but the DVD Access program has nothing to do with playing the course DVD's. The DVD access is Apple software that activates your DVD player when you open a link that is connecting to a DVD file on the Internet. Hence the file not found: It can't find the link...
BTW: a DVD file is a total different item than a DVD...
To play the course DVD's you just need DVD software, such as Nero. This should have come with your DVD player. If it didn't, just Google it and download a free DVD player.
Please PM me when you still have trouble with it.

Practice, Practice, Practice. Over the years, I have learned to speak softly and slowly. This helps me better control my pitch and tone. Also, it can be far more important to speak as a lady (using the proper words and phrases) than sound like a high-pitched, squeeky schoolgirl.
