Blast From the Past

I recently watched a DVD collection of old television commercials . Although, this was very enjoyable ("oh! I remember that one!"), I began to realize that, at those early ages when I viewed these, I had the "transgender monster tugging at me." Watching these then, and now, I'm kind of in wonderment at the female-envy I experienced all those early years. My current reaction is one of anger in that I had no one to discuss this with when young and also that I had to keep it under wraps due to my parents prejudices and society back then. I'm happy that times have changed for the better to some degree for our younger generation on such matters. I just had to share this with you all. Cheri

I had a similar experience when I was cleaning out a cupboard at my parent's house. I came across some old books and looked through them finding pictures of women which I used to stare at when I was a child. The memories came flooding back about how envious I was that women got all the privileges that I would never experience - girls in birthday frocks with ribbons in their hair, coming of age parties, ballerinas, attending social events in ball gowns, being a bride, being a mother etc. How many hours did I spend alone just staring at the pictures, thinking how unfair life was, wondering if I was the only freak in the world.

I could not bear throwing the books out so I put them back in the cupboard. My mother said she wanted to give them away but I said to keep them for sentimental value. She has no idea what I meant by sentimental value.

I too have found many blasts from the past, just the other day I was cleaning out my lingerie drawer and came across items that I wore at a very young age.........ahhhhh to be that young and innocent again.

I often think of the sitcoms from the late 50's early 60's were all the women where lucky enough to wear a dress and heels everyday to cook, clean the house etc....

Boy what I wouldn't give for some old Penneys, Monky wards, or Sears-Roebuck catalogues from 1969 to 1974. My repressive Mother would hand them to me and send me to my room with them because with 7 kids they had us each circle items we wanted in the toy section in a different colored ink so when budgeting Christmas they could get hints about what we wanted versus the budget. I kinda wishI'd had the guts to ask for a girdle with garter straps.

And why did they have to be in black and white those pages??!! To this day I think I'd be a bigger p*&n addict if porno was published on newsprint in B & W.

I watched The Deadwood Stage film of Doris Day’s (Is that what it’s called?) and had all those feelings you describe: seeing her transform from this dusty tomboy into the beautiful women and the dresses of the saloon girls etc. I’m sure I thought watching it as a kid ‘why can’t I do that?’

Thanks for the input, ladies. The Petticoat Junction girls did it for me, then came the MaryAnne and Ginger syndrome. Anyhoo, I guess my point is that us fifties/early sixties may whine a little more perhaps because have been kind of caught between two societal ages. I'm kinda regretful that I never considered to bring these up to a psychologist I saw for about two years in my teens, another for about two years in my twenties due to unconscious and conscious supression.But, on a more serious note, it makes me realize how important it is to listen to your kids, no matter what the issue, and not to create a wall of fear that may alienate them. [SIZE="3"]Yes, I still day dream of those lovely ladies that I saw when growing up. I always enjoyed getting the Sears catolog to myself so I could check out the women's fashion pages, otherwise I had to stick to the toy section. I can never forget the girls in petticoats and how wonderful they looked. For those of us who can't get away from the 50's look there is the Petticoat Pond site. I even have pic's there.

Funny thing, I was thinking of this very subject while driving back from dropping my daughter off at school. I was always a "Ginger" fan and she had the best gowns, especially her white beaded one. She was ALWAYS my main inspiration when dreaming of "what could be'.......

Of course, MaryAnn was a cutie, too. She's aging well, also.
