Invited to A Church Fundraiser Dinner and Dance

My wife and I were given tickets to attend the Resurrection Community Church fundraiser dinner and dance tonight and represent the Houston transgender community. The event which also includes a casino is being held in one of Houston's premier banquet halls. Many of Houston's business and political leaders will be present. Last month the senior pastor of this church for our local Tri-ess chapter gave a program on religious issues facing transgendered persons. Now we are trying to figure out what to wear. I picked out a long black dress with a magenta, lace over jacket. I am looking forward to a great dinner, playing blackjack as Melanie and dancing with my wife as two women on the dance floor. All of this under the auspices of a church. How can we get more churches to follow this lead? How many churches would invite you to come enfemme to their activities? I will report tomorrow with pictures on the event.

That is totally awesome. I cannot imagine a church being acceptable to TG's. I live in a strong LDS (Mormon) area and a transgendered person would also be burnt at the stake, with the appropriate prayers for my salvation, of course. Have a great time and we are waiting for the pics.

I have friends in the rodeo industry in Houston and area. We were going to walk from the Sheraton (Astrodome) to Papadeau's, but were advised to take a taxi, because we were wearing hats, and were quite white. All the best, but please be careful! wenda

Actually, I'm not surprised. Recently I was pleased to hear one of my past churches caters to a small-but-ever-present TG clique. I've seen western church take it on the chin plenty of times from LGBT and vice versa. I think RCC's fund raiser just goes to show that if we drop the attitude once in a while, we can really make some progress.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time, Melanie R. So...I take it the pastor was maybe a Tri-Ess member? I'm with you, I think it would be great for this to catch on.

Gambling, dancing and crossdressing IN the church, the actual church building??? I am going out on a limb here but I'm thinking they are not affiliated with the Baptists, Mennonites, Quakers, or as Ronni suggests the Mormons. From a fun factor that is a pretty fun sounding church. In the defense of Mormons, I will say I've been to many a dance in the cultural hall, of course I never tried it en femme..and am not likely to. Brings a whole new connotation to "Stake Center".

Peggy and I have returned from the church fundraising event. No the event was actually held in a banquet hall that is part of the Texas Medical Center. When we arrived after a 35 mile drive we started toward the restroom before entering the banquet hall.. Two female policewomen immediately ran over and said, "ladies the women's rest room is the next hall". Of course over the next 3 hours after a full meal and drinks I knew the women's restroom well. The other women in the restroom were so nice. Either they did not read me or were just being nice. The first picture below shows me at the door into the banquet hall. We immediately found a couple we know and sat with them. This couple is a post op TS and lesbian partner. The senior minister in the second picture came over to the table and gave both Peggy and I a big hug. Apparently the $50 tickets provided at no charge to us was a gift from the church. The Minister of Outreach had arranged for us to be present. Of the 300+ present so many greeted us with open arms. They told us they want more transgendered persons and their significant others to come to their church. Now how do we clone these people for other areas of the USA? After a delicious meal, Melanie had to try her skill at playing blackjack. Great fun but my $5000 in chips (play money) was gone in one hour. Sounds like how Melanie does in Vegas. A picture below shows Melanie at the blackjack table.

This is the church that each year is one of our sponsors for our annual Houston Transgender Unity Banquet - the largest transgender single night event in the country. In April 2008 we will have our 16th annual banquet bringing six TG groups together along with many area gay and lesbian supporters. We are so fortunate to live in Houston.

Fantastic! It is so wonderful that you have the acceptance of the community, not just friends and neighbors. If only the rest of the world could be so open minded. The pics look great. So glad that you had a wonderful time.
