I started playing the Neverwinter Nights MORPG about 8 years ago and, just for a lark, chose a female character. Over the years she's become like an alter ego and in some ways is responsible for more feminine behaviours bleeding into my real life. I think she has also facilitated my explorations of sexuality and - more recently - gender identity. I don't have a problem playing male characters (especially in FPS and other solo games) but I'm now more predisposed to play women in RPGs.
Never really thought of that but my video games were stuff like pong and space invaders 😩
Within my own gaming experience, I usually pick a female avatar to represent myself. Which given my choice in games, is not very often – I rarely get to take off my helmet and fireproof suit, apparently.
One of my current IGNs could be construed as a female name as well as a noun anyway, but the references in my alt IGN reinforces the latter.
