Just about anywhere in the French Quarter !!!!! New Orleans is a very liberal City (at least what's left of it)

Sweetheart I lived there for 32 years and crossdressing is a way of life and nobody messes with you as long as you act like a lady. Oh yes you will get looks but you can go and come as you please.:hugs:

I visit the big easy every couple of years, and although there might be something I haven't yet seen there, I'd be hard pressed to imagine it. The tolerance of any nonthreatening behavior in or near the French Quarter is incredible.

...I would have to agree. Just about anywhere in the city is perfectly fine. Another nice area is the garden district with the lovely antebellum mansions and also Magazine street, another area of the city with some great shoppes and interesting galleries and restaurants.

There is a great small lingerie shop right on Bourbon Street. I don't remember the name, but it had lots of good stuff, at reasonable prices. This is in comparison to the Hustler Store down the street. Have a good time!

Was there with my Military unit in the fall. There were a bunch of guys around in red skirts. We were wondering what was going on but turn out it was some kind of walk/run for breast cancer. My friends were like "I wanna kick their ass" and I was thinking "gosh I wish I was with them". They got to wear sexy skirts in public all day, drink and do whatever without fear ............

I was just in New Orleans the weekened before Thanksgiving (and consequently my 21st birthday :Angry3:). Unfortunately I was unable to dress as I was with several students from my school attending a conference. I cant wait to go back now that I am 21 it will be so much better.

I did see one ts. I saw her two different days both times too far away to go say hi. Also I saw a ts club but it didnt seem to be open anymore.

I lived in New Orleans for a while, and I "came of age" as a Tgirl there...

The Good:

* You can be openly TG and be accepted in much of the city. There locals have a very live-and-let-live attitude; don't mess with them, the don't mess with you. Being a "freak" is par for the course. New Orleans attracts eccentrics, and
* There's always something going on. The French Quarter is always busy, there's an active arts and music community.
* The food is far better than you've been told. Really.
* Most of the places you want to go are within walking distance or accessible by streetcar.
* You'll find some great shops in the Quarter and on Magazine Street. Be willing to do some walking; it's worth it.
* Open yourself up to the city's charms. Talk to people, don't be shy about asking questions or just enjoying the sights.
* Cafe Lafitte in Exile and Good Friends were my default bars, though with Rubyfruit Jungle reopening I'd certainly stop by there, too. With the exception of the very touristy bars (Pat O'Briens, Margaritaville, etc.) most places are pretty accepting.

The Bad:

* The city government is a joke. Don't expect things to work like they do in most cities.
* Summers are boiling hot. It'll be 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity at 11 PM and you'll feel like your going to melt.
* Mardi Gras is when every idiot comes to town, gets drunk and embarrasses themselves.
* The locals are great; the tourists are *******s. Every time I've been hassled it's been some tourist whose manners were left at the hotel.

The Ugly:

* The New Orleans Police Department are useless. Really. And the thugs know it. They're overworked, understaffed and often don't give a frak about the niceties. During the daytime, stay in well-trafficked areas. At night, take a cab. If you don't see people around, or a few people hanging around, find a crowd-fast.
* Oh, if you happen to run into the NOPD, treat them like they're the most important people in the world. Be VERY polite, respectful, and don't piss them off. The Orleans Parish Jail is one of the worst in the country, and they will throw you in with the general population.

Either you will love New Orleans, or you will hate it. I miss the city all the time, but I also know I can't live there right now.

Divamissz has it pretty much on target . I used to live in the city. I lived on Bourbon Street when I was younger. I have a big place in my heart for it, but I just cannot live there. Maybe if I was rich.

I do go there from time to time. There are so many things to do and places to eat and music to listen to for a city its size. It really is amazing. You can have a great time.

Its funny that I actually CD outside the city in the small conservative towns or in the suburbs when it would be so easy to do in the city. But I fear the police and the tourists. I have been in Central lock up before (through no fault of my own). That was the worst night of my life. I could not imagine going through that en femme.

The first time I ever CD'd in public was there, but I had my SO with me. We stayed in a wonderful hotel in a room a few hundred years old and the furniture to match. It was very romantic. The best restaurant in the city downstairs and the gay bars just blocks away. If you are with other people you will be OK. The police will usually not mess with people in groups or with their spouses. That does not apply to tourists.

To be fair, there are some really good new people in the city council that are trying to do the right thing. But they are hamstrung by the rest of the system. The mayor is a worthless, corrupt, incompetent, jackass.

I'm not from New Orleans or Louisiana but I would love to visit there. I have a couple of close freinds who go there often including a guy who did some kind of volunteer work in connection with that Katrina business. I lived in a midwestern town which was on a railroad line called "The Central" which services Chicago,Memphis and New Orleans. I love New Orleans and Louisiana styled cooking and that town with that railroad line was the only place I've lived in Illinois where I could get Andoullie sausage! There is a wonderful wigs, cosmetics and accesories shop on Royal Street in New Orleans called fifi mahony. I'm pretty sure that's in the French quarter but I don't know because I don't live there. fifi mahony's is CD freindly to the max and I've ordered from them online a couple of times. They are online and you just google fifi mahony. They lean toward the drag/fetish/sissy/goth/camp/vamp kind of thing. They do makeovers too. Anyhow, I'm hoping to visit the big easy before I get too terribly old. I don't drive so it would probably be by the Amtrak,The Bus or the Plane.

Fifi's is one of my favorite places. You can get "normal" stuff but they do a great job with the glam/drag look...

New Orleans!!
What an amazing city and in many ways.
As a cder I have never felt more comfortable than in NOLA and I have been just about everywhere in NOLA. I could tell stories (and some are in cd.com's archives) but I won't bore you. Bourbon St is Bourbon St. I enjoy the many places just off Bourbon; beware of Hurricanes and Hand Grenades. Enjoy the city; it's history, it's vibrance, it's uniqueness, it's acceptance. Its one of a kind city in America. Celebrate with it.
Love,
Stephanie.
