View Full Version : Open mouth, insert hair

I'm setting here dressed, having soup for lunch, and wondering if real hair is as much trouble as a wig. I can't seem to get the spoon in my mouth without a few strands sneaking in. It's the wig in my avatar, and while I might be able to pull it back into a ponytail, I think that would be just too ugly. What do those of you with more experience do?

Regards,
Liz

Hi Elizabeth,

I am one of those who has real shoulder length hair and yes, except when it is in a pony tail, it does tend to wander, particularly on windy days or when bending your head down.

Keeping long hair from falling forward when you lean forward to keep soup or tomato sauce from landing on your expensive cashmere sweater can make you jealous of men with their short hair and their ability to sit closer to the table!

My most annoying moments are when strands somehow get into my mouth when I'm chewing gum. Yetch!

If you watch any GG with long hair you'll begin to notice how often she casually pushes her hair back from her face. It becomes an automatic gesture that she (you) really don't think about.

A bit harder to learn, but eventually you also acquire that ultra-feminine head toss that women use to put hair back behind them.

I have long natural hair now, and it happens from time to time when I bend over a bit at the dinner table, so I just try to push it back over my shoulders or up behind my ears when it falls forward again, and if I get tired of that, I just band it in a pony tail, but it will be better when my hair reaches my lower back, and just stays there, I hope.

Sure they did, or at least Bill Cosby did in one of his books a number of years ago. Something about why did you start to grow hair in your ears at age 45 or some such thing.

At the time I thought it was hilarious, now I can appreciate the question...

I now understand why GGs eat like they do - they have to - Yes, I have had trouble keeping my wig hair out of my food

Oh yes I have the toss down pat. What is fun, is ridding in the jeep with the top off, and your hair blows in your eyes. Hurts and can't see where your going.:hugs:

Hi JoAnne,

Interested in what you see as the differences in the way GGs eat from the way GMs eat. Same as my list? Or different?

I usually put my hair half up half down, although lately I've been sporting a French braid. You could try either. Or French braid only the top part.

I think one of the saddest things for me, is wanting to do all these things with my hair and not knowing how. Sure, it's a wig, and I can take it off and work on it to supposedly make it easier, but I keep screwing it up. I watch women at work casually just take their hair down and fix it without any mirror at all, and it comes out perfect, but I can't get it right no matter what I do. I have all kinds of clips, but lacking the whole 'growing up girl' experience of doing it, and having someone else sort of tutor/help me at least the first few times, so I still can't get the clips in my hair to look and hold right. Just one of the annoying parts of being in the closet I guess.

My first wig was a straight style similar to yours. I couldn't keep it from falling onto my face, getting it in my mouth, inhaling it up my nose, etc. My solution was to buy wigs that are curly and styled. I tried everything from barettes to pony tails and nothing worked until I got the styled ones. The one I'm wearing in my avatar is one of my favorites and I have several that are shorter. I guess I just not a straight haired girl.

I try not to lean forward but in the case of soup sometimes you have to. I tend to curl the side my spoon is on (I'm right handed) behind my ear. The other side goes over my left shoulder :)

My own hair is long, but I wear it in a ponytail most of the time. Denali's half up/half down should work and look good, too! I would try a braid, but while I think I could braid someone else's hair I don't know how to braid my own.

I have always had shoulder length, or longer, hair. I have never had a problem with it getting into my food. If I were bobbing for apples, or something, I suppose I would need to hold it back, but I just cannot imagine long hair being a problem with eating.. for most folks.

I do hate when I have lipgloss on, in a windy day, and strands of hair stick to my lips.

Actually, I think that proper etiquette is to daintily and carefully bring the food to the mouth and not the mouth to the food. Therefore, as a proper lady, small portions on the fork and in the spoon are in order. That is just another thing for us transformers to learn. That said, I still try to make sure the utensil with the food is over the table and not over my lap, and yes, I bring my mouth with accompanying hair to the food. Now I know why my hair is so hard to comb when I am touching up in the lady's room after a nice dinner at a restaurant.

Was leaning BACK in my easy chair. I STILL had a hair sandwich!

It tasted a lot like ham and cheese!

So, I switched hair sprays! The new one is Bubble Gum flavor!

If you don't clip it with barrettes or something, tuck your longer strands of hair behind your ears, I've seen GG's do it a million times. Sure, you may have to repeat it a few times over the course of a meal. Works for me.

I always nagged at girlfriends to wear their hair down and never understood why they wouldn't till I wore a wig once. It was always in my face and tickling me. Fun...but pretty annoying too. lol

Plastic hair clips clipped on for the meal and taken off when it is over. The spring clips can be done instantly by feel faster than a barette for some of us. And, you can store them on your handbag strap like the gg's do . I also keep my pepper spray there as well!

I am so glad that we all have the same problem. I thought it was just me.
Now I understand that when we eat like a lady the head should be erect and the food brought to the mouth with our forks and spoons and we should not lean forward and hang over our food like men
Nice comments
thanks

As one who has recently graduated to longer hair, I am looking forward to getting some clips and stuff like that to keep this from happening so much. It drives me crazy!!!

Well there's two obvious solutions to this problem....

1) Cute short perky hair styles which I simply adore!!!

And

B) Flavored hair spray!!! Yeah!! Like chocolate!! I'm calling Hersheys right now!! Redefine Strawberry Blonde from a hair color to a dessert flavor!! :)

What do those of you with more experience do?

My hair goes halfway down my back. I've had my hair that long for over 15 years now and am STILL not used to it getting where it 'shouldn't be'.

I'm basically at the point where I have it tied back in a ponytail or with a barrette almost all of the time. On a windy day, even that is not enough to keep strands from flying out, so I have to wear something like a hat as well.

I can't STAND stray hairs blowing forward and brushing me on my cheeks while I'm trying to concentrate on something :( I don't know how GGs with long hair can stand having it covering half of their face.

The other problem time, besides eating, is in bed. If I tied it back, I can feel the knot of the ponytail at the back of my head against the pillow. If i let it go free, I have to brush hair out of my face every time I roll over in bed.

Someday I'll get sick enough of it and just shave it ALL off... but until then, I do like it so much more than having to wear a wig when going out!

I have longer than shoulder-length hair. Never had this problem that you mention.

Whatever the length, hair will just hang down naturally. (Assuming you sit upright and not slouch).

Never worn a wig myself, but maybe they are too stiff?

disclaimer: these youtube videos are intended for GG's who can put hair spray, mousse, etc in their hair. I have no experience with wigs, and don't know whether using those on a wig would screw it up. If you use these, adapt as needed so you don't mess the wig up.

When I first grew my hair out, this was a problem for me also as I rolled over a lot and would feel the "speed bump". I just changed to a high ponytail so all the hair was over the top of the pillow and out of the way.
