Well I've never had a problem going out enfemme around here though in my mind the Burgh isn't the most liberal area in the world.. More like blue collar which I always equated to conservative.. And I've always wondered why I haven't had problems...
But last night I was watching one of those great public television programs about Pittsburgh... (And there's a ton of them - Pittsburghers love their city!!).... So on this show.. I think it was Dave and Daves excellent adventure....... There were quite a few local TV and radio celebs...... discussing why they love Pittsburgh... And they all talked about all the great things that we have... Bla bla bla....... but this one girl from a jazz radio station said something that struck me....... She said....... "Pittsburgh is just like a small town.... No Wait!! ...... it's not like a small town....... because in a small town everybody is into every ones business and people gossip.... In Pittsburgh no one cares where you live, where you work, what car you drive, what you wear or who your sexually attracted to....... As long as you love the Steelers"
And it hit me.... Yeah!!! That's exactually what's going on!! That explains why no one cares that I wear womens clothing........ Because were all bound together by a sports team???? Sounds pretty strange when you think about it...... But I think she described the reagion's tollerence..... I need to make sure I wear my Steelers earrings and necklace when ever I go out!! Insurance!!
So how accepting is you home town and why or why not?

To a great degree Iowa City tolerates a lot of alternate ideas/life styles. It is a college town and that balances out being in the middle of Iowa. At the same time though ... you have to be careful because the "basis" of the town, those that are here for the long haul, act like it is a very small town and get in each others biz all the time. Seems like everyone who has lived here for more than 20 years is a professional gossip. I do not know why. So, I am very careful about where I go. Much more comfortable in other towns.
Maybe I should wear more Hawkeye* clothing ??? LOL !!!!

I think every town has places where you'll be safe and not bothered, and places where you'll be 'caught dead'; literally. NYC has lots of tolerant areas, yet you never know when a bunch of a$$h*&%s will turn the corner and want to bash your head in. Any time I even consider going out dressed up, a song called 'The Killing of Georgie' by Rod Stewart goes through the back of my mind. For those of you who never heard it:

I'm in a town near Philly in South Jersey with no character/main street it's just bland & lots of malls(dats a good!). eventually would like to move when my younger daughter gets out of college.

I agree. In a large city there isn't a single homogeneous culture that would allow you to classify every area as tolerant. In Houston there isn't a majority population. We are a city of minorities. The largest minority is Latino followed by Anglo and then African American. There is also a large Asian population. Each of these groups may be more or less tolerant of crossdressing. Add in subcultures within each cultural or ethnic group and you can expect to encounter the full spectrum of reactions to something that deviates from what is considered normal.

It depends what ypou mean by my home town and I guess that it is exactly the same in the UK as in the States. My actual home town is an ex mining community and not very accepting at all. Tricia's home town of Manchester is very chilled by it. Maybe its because it is the home of Manchester United?

But not what mainstream PA. is, I live in a city with a land mass close to PHILLY, The population is small but a large City in the books. Our biggest attraction is a brewrey, and if you don't drink there beer your an outcast, which I don't :) If you don't have a least one four wheel drive, strike two
And if there is not at least one gun in your house, your an outsider, up here it is all hicks.

So if I walk around in a skirt but am carrying a Yeungling (mmmm...beer), I'll be ok? Does AWD count towards the 4WD? Does a nail gun count towards the gun thing?????

Hey!! I drive a 4wd truck ya know!! In some parts of the country girls with their own 4wd truck are revered and put on a pedistal... even to the extent that not being a real girl is a minor detail... Depending on what options the truck has.. .. Lol. I have 3 nail guns too.. :)

Where I live it is so small and rednecked that there is virtually no acceptance. Maybe one or two at most. Central ILL is an area where acceptance of differences is not encouraged. That's why I have to be very careful, even though I have been pushing the envelope a bit. As far as sports teams we are evenly divided in baseball. If you are a Cardinal fan, most people around here, you are pretty conservative. The Cub fans however, go Cubbies, are more sympathetic. We are all considered losers anyway so who cares.

Well I am not totally sure about the tolerance level here. Im from Detroit myself. Even though we are in a blue collar area, people seem fairly accepting. Detroit has a fairly active gay community in the area. One of are local cities now has a gay mayor, and Affirmations which offers great support to those in the gay/lesbian/transgender community. I have always beet treated well when I have been out and about.

Here in Little Rhody, you're pretty much all right as long as you have a Red Sox or Patriots sticker somewhere on your car. We'll even forgive the "Massholes" some of their crazy driving antics if they're a fellow Sox fan. Of course, the Italian 1/2 of the state probably roots for the NY teams, but to each his own.
Having something, anything in common with a person always makes it easier to identify with them and get along.
When crossdressed, I keep a very low profiile within 20 miles of home. But overall I'd say suburban New England is a relatively tolerant place.

never tried a nail gun, I usually use glue or tabs. Do they stay on better with a gun?

If I could find team apparel for the Kansas Jayhawks in my size, I would be all over that! I did find a cute pink top for the KC Chiefs, but I would doubt if anyone has heard of them, so I passed.
I don't own a gun yet. That's only because I haven't found a nice enough one cheap enough (I'm into the historical side of it). I do, however, have a 4wd truck!

I live in a medium size town. I am not saying it is highly conservative--but people say--"The hookers wear wooden shoes."
So... I just used the yellow pages and counted the number of bars listed, 64, about one column in the yellow pages. Then I counted the number of churches listed (gave up quick). There were 23 columns of churches. I estimated 1,472.
No gay or TG bars or businesses listed. But two gay organizations: "Gay and Lesbian Community Network" and "Gays in Faith Together".

In my home town some are for the U of Oklahoma, and some are for Okla. State, so you will find both enmity and camaraderie no matter which you choose. It is as tolerant to me and my clothes as most every other town in the USA I have been in, meaning most don't act like they care, but there is the occasional sorehead.

Karren, it's easier right now.
You know that most of the city is still delirious over the sixth title and the Iron City is still being poured.
It will be quite a bit less tolerant when the shine wears off in late June and the Pirates are 30 games under .500-AGAIN!!
In the closet until the Steelers return to St. Vincent in July.

Karren,
I grew up in Pittsburgh and have to agree with what you say; as long as your a Steeler fan you are safe. I live in Columbus, OH now which is very tollerent of diversity, especially with OSU here in the middle of town.
I have to say anytime I have been in Annette mode while visiting my home town of Pittsburgh I have had great times and never any problems.
