when traveling to a new are - any thoughts on how to go about that?

I don't think I would ever go out in public in my home area (very closeted), but may consider doing so if I was on a trip well out of my region. I would only like to go to a place where it would be common and accepted.

How does one go about finding such a place?

Hello Jen!
Welcome to the forum! I travel quite a bit. I always first start out at gay nightclubs. From there I find clubs that cater to TG/CD. I can then branch out to restaurants, plays and places where I can reasonable expect to be accepted.

That's what I was thinking, but how do you go about finding gay nightclubs?

Good answer Charlie - if you find all those places in Cincy, put it in a post

I work on the assumption that "I am a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars. I have a right to be here..." (Can't you just tell I'm a child of the sixties- and proud of it!) So all places are accepting.

I've not found an exception yet.

Looks good in writing but in the real world -

Just do not go anywhere en femme that you would not really want to go in drab. If it is some place like some white trash bar or there are a lot of mullets running around, might want to avoid.

When I am traveling and in a new area with no recommendations from other, I just check out gay/lesbian listings for bars in the area via my laptop. If I make it into any of them and want to go to more, I ask there for recommendations. Many times I find out that so many "normal" places are just as friendly as the gay/lesbian places.

If I am lazy, I just get casually dressed and go to a local club and act normal.....

If you want gay addresses, look in the yellow pages and the internet, that's what they're for.

Good point, however this isn't about where I belong or don't belong. This is about going out in public for the first time ever and being more comfortable and being in an atmosphere that more closely matches my method of presentation at that time.

I seriously need to find some cd-friendly places to go as well. It sure as hell is not cd-friendly in my neck of the woods. I'm not quite passable and if I'm not very careful, I could find myself getting "taught a lesson" by some local thugs.

My wife keeps telling me how much she wants to go to Vegas some time. I'm not in to the whole gambling thing... but if it really is so cd-friendly... maybe I it's time I gave her the vacation she's always wanted. Actually, we've joked about renewing our vows there - BOTH as brides this time... and by a crossdressing... uh... wedder? Gaa - what are they called - the one who weds the love birds? Drawing total blank! Anyway - would love to do that some time! :)

Ok then.

Cincy?

If you want a safe place to go out for your first time, I would suggest a Crossport meeting.
