To make a long story short, I'm 77 years old, and would love to take hormones to feel better, have larger breasts and all the good things I've heard about what hormones might do for me. Am I too old for hormones to help? Just wondering. See my doctor in July when I spring this on her. I'm in good health and would like to spend the rest of what few years I may have left in life, as happy as can be, and as feminen as can be.
Thanks, Trudyann

Abraham Lincoln:

"And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years."

As a friend of mine once told me when I said I couldn't do something because I was too old "How will you be if you don't do it?" The medical community may have some problem with adding hormones because of health concerns but they should not have a problem with your gender identity. Maybe spin it towards preventing ( or alleviating) prostate problems

Just looking at your intro and you say that your wife is against the cding, so how would you explain the changes to her if you started to take hormones.

I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, just remember it's not only going to affect you.

Since I have an enlarged prostate, taking some medications to shrink it, would have some of the same side effects as estrigen. And estrigen would probably cost me a lot less. Some how I plan to pull it off. My concern was how effective the estrigen might be at my age, in regard to larger breasts and other gender advantages. Trudyann

Go for it. There's no such thing as too old. What a dumb idea.

I guess you could be called a very late bloomer but it certainly isn't too late to find the real you. If you don't try you will regret it.

If you are just concerned about the enlarged prostate there are herbs like Saw Palmetto that helps with PSA. If you want to change your physical appearance then the Estrogen and Spiro are things that will effect your hormonal levels and that will change some aspects of your anatomy. It is true that you are too old for SRS surgery; so whatever you want out of life.

Thank you girls. Just the idea of taking hormones and what it might do to my body gives me a thrill. Will keep you informed to what the doctor tells me. Just hope I'm not disapointed.

Go for it Trudyann. I recommend it as I am 70+ and enjoying the ride.

Hi Trudyann,

I'm 59 and was thinking I'm just too late for hormones and thinking about transitioning, but your posting and the encouragement of the other members made me realize - it's never too late to be happy. Go for it and I'm right there with you.

Hugs,

Cathy

Trudyann there is a way for you to be happy! It may not be the first idea you have, but do not let that slow you down. Keep looking and you will find what will work best for you!

I think I'd flip the question around - why NOT take them if it will make you happy?

Hi Truddyann, welcome,

What are you taking at the moment for the prostate???

Is is Advodart by any chance?

If it is, that's a Dutassteride, and is what I use to block THT (forms of testosterone) but is primarily used in the treatment of an enlarged prostate.
And I believe it's been instrumental in my Hormone therapy, and works very well with all my other meds too, like the Spiro and the Oestradol (female hormone)

If your thinking of substituting the estrogen for your current prostate medication, I would strongly warn you against that, the Estrogen's will not shrink your prostate because they do Not block the Testosterones that's causing the prostate to enlarge, at your current age, you may have low testosterone levels in you now, but the T is still there, by adding an estrogen, it may actually increase your testosterone levels if you stopped using a T blocker..because estrogen can convert back to T.

To be honest, and I am truly a very honest person by trait, I really would not expect much more breast growth than you may have already experienced so far, but being on HRT, it will alleviate many anxietys you may be experiencing, and you will feel much more content within yourself..

PS, just as a side note, just to throw it out there, I have heard of more than one surgeon in Thailand that will perform SRS on older patients without any letters of approval as long as they are healthy enough to survive the OP and are of sound mind but does ultimately rest on the surgeons digression..
