Hello everyone,
I just had my lab work done and am waiting for the call from my endo to fill my prescription for hormones! I am very excied as you can imagine. However I have some concerns.
My endo said he will put me on progesterone for 3 months and then go to estrogen. He doesn't like to use spiro as he's had good luck with knocking down testosterone levels with progesterone and estrogen. I was surprised at this but he's the doctor and has a great deal of experience dealing with the transgendered. I thought I had done enough reading to prepare myself with enough knowledge for when I talked to him but I didn't know much about progesterone. Now I'm reading that it's not necessary and it can act like an androgen and can cause more problems than it's worth. I'm certainly going to talk with him before I go further but I'm just wondering if anyone here has gone on this type of regimen or taken progesterone and what their experience with it was. Does anyone know if it comes in a patch form? Some of my info is a little outdated.
Thankyou !
An anxious Lauren:)

Since you go to the same therapist as I do, are you using the Papillon Ctr for you HRT or are you using a doctor closer to home? Since I expect to receive a recommendation letter for HRT in a couple of months from my therapist, I was planning to go thru the Papillon Ctr for the HRT. How many visits to the doctor do you do and would you recommend a more local doctor, for me it's about an 1 1/2 hour drive? :battingeyelashes:

My doctor typically prescribes Sprio and Estrace. He doesn't like to prescribe progesterone, but if you persist will prescribe Prometrium or Medroxyprogesterone. I had taken the former for probably over a year and later for the past few weeks. Can't say I've noticed the effects of either. But I'm just level keeled anyway. :battingeyelashes:

I have heard anecdotally that estrogen without Spiro can be converted to testosterone by your body. Oops!

all the best,
Terri

I have a contact who has taken estrogen orally for some years-no anti androgens as he wants to remain 'functional'.Alas, he smokes and this and the riskier oral estrogen really are a bad combination. Slightly droopy snoopy breasts. I am sure with his dosage, he'd be fuller by now with the spiro knocking down the nasty T.

Tori- i found the progesterone helped my breast growth , but it did cause some serious moodiness at times....

my doctor is ts, and she takes it, so she couldnt exactly recommend that i dont take it..

To the best of my knowledge, I never heard of a full HRT regimen without some kind of anti-androgen in the mix, (Spiro) unless you had or going to have an Orchi..
As far as progesterone, I'm not a fan of it, BUT, it is generally recommended to use it as an opposing hormone with the use of estrogen to reduce the risks of certain cancers if those risks are high based on your family history.

My endo has a lot of experience in the community and is well respected and I hate to second guess him but with what I've been reading I just don't see the benefits to progesterone alone.
I think he abides to the older Benjamin idea that in feminizing we mimic what happens in the young female body and give progesterone to prepare the body for estrogen. I can see further consultation is needed before I do anything.
