View Full Version : doctor's appt today - I'm fully shaved, and no problems

There have been several threads about people not wanting to shave (legs, chest, etc.) because their doctor might notice, OR that people have shaved and are now worried about an upcoming doctor's office visit. A few years ago, that was me too, but not any more.

I'm just posting to let anyone concerned about being shaved at the doctor's office... it's unlikely anyone will say a word.

I'm shaved clean from the neck down. At today's doctor's appt., I had a bunch of do-dads stuck all over my chest for some monitoring. My shirt was off. While the nurse stuck those things all over me, we enjoyed some pleasant conversation (actually talked about the Six Million Dollar Man tv show). I was never looked at funny and she made no comment about it.

Another nurse came in for additional monitoring and testing. Again, conversation, enjoyable chatting, and I didn't get looked at funny or questioned.

The doctor noticed that I'm in very good physical shape when he came in. More testing. No comments. No problem.

I was not worried about the appointment ahead of time - I knew there would be no issue. I was honestly hoping they'd mention something about my being shaved, but they did not. I was kind of curious to see where the conversation might go to to be honest.

Perhaps nothing was said because I am noticeably fit or perhaps no one noticed a thing. The secret to not being questioned (I believe) is to not have any stubble. Shaved real good this morning - right down to my fingers.

Oh, same with the legs in a doctor's visit a few months back. Had to drop trou (was in guy-mode), my legs were shaved, and no one looked at me funny or said a word.

When I first started shaving, I was very self-conscious about this, but I think I was just causing my own mental-screw with it all. I don't care now. No one says a word... even when I want them to. :heehee:

Anyone still worried? If so, just curious as to why? Again - I never even got looked at funny - no double takes, no wide eyes, nothing.

You are so correct about people not noticing, not commenting or just not caring. IMHO we CD's make mountains out of molehills about just about everything. I personally get a little tired of the "Oh My God" thing about everything around here.

So why do I keep coming back? It can be rater entertaining at times I suppose.

The only concern I'd have about the Doctor's office would be in a small town if the nurse blabbed. For the most part, those people see all sorts of things, and hairless men is the least of it.

I have been fully shaved now for several years, but still had the nervousness about it if i were in the hospital or the doctors office

A few years back,i had to go to the hospital to have a procedure done..
Just before it was to be done, the nurse came over to see me and shave me where they had to go in.

Her comment was" oh, already shaved, that is good " end of comment.

Last Dec i was in the hospital for 10 days and had more tests and x-rays than one could imagine, and not a comment.

The only comment i got was one night, when the night nurse came in.

Her comment, was You have beautiful nails, how do you do that. We chatted for a minuet about the nail polish i used and she said, " I will have to try that "

I had a physical exam last month. Both my legs and arms were shaved. My doctor did a reflex test were she hit my knee with a small mallet so she had to see my legs. Nothing at all was said. I've been shaving for a few months and only my daughter asked me about it and she really had no problem with it.

Last week I had a colonoscopy and a medical exam yesterday. My legs are shaved and no one seemed to notice. I did remove the nail polish from my toes unfortunatly, didn't even have to take my socks off.

I am waxed from my neck to my pubic area. I've been ths way for about 4 years. I've been to my Doc each year for my annual physical so he's seen me this way for a while (I've been seeing him for 38 years off and on).

The last time I was there I was siting on the exam table with only my under shorts on (no panties) all he did, was when he was getting ready to listen to my chest sounds, was to thump my chest with the palm of his and and say, "Been pumping some serious lately?" Of course I replied, "yes just got to pump up". My guy self loved it.

My whole body has been shaved neck down for several years. A few years ago I tripped over a low wall and had a real problem with my left-side abdomen. Pain didn't go, got worse, so went to Casualty/A&E (whatever it is in the States :)), and they thought I might have burst my spleen... so loads of abdo exams, ultrasound etc... nothing! And no comments about a totally nude body either.

I have been in France a lot and loads of guys over there have shaved legs in shorts in public.

I was talking about shaved bodies to a young guy at work recently and his response was... it is now trendy to be male and shaved and/or tatooed and/or pierced, etc... I have now seen some interesting pictures of "normal heterosexual people" well shaved and enjoying good M-F relationships.

As usual the young are way ahead of our hangups... :D

Yep putting France on my places to go...before it was just for the wine and food.

My Doctor knows all about me so she doesn't care about hair.

Thanks for those of you who shared. :) I'm so glad to hear that you're in the same pool as me - it doesn't matter and no one notices or cares.

But is this it?

Has everyone who is fully comfortable being shaved around the doc (or whoever) already chimed in?

There has to be more.

Come on, shavers - POST something! :)

Anyone still ashamed of being noticed clean-shaven?

Anyone thinking about shaving?

Has this been helpful to anyone? A single soul?

If not, what might make you feel more comfortable about shaving?

Come on - TALK to me! :)

In response to Gabrielle's post above, it appears that shaving, at least for the medical community is a non issue. Doctors and nurses may notice but as the posts indicate they do not care if one is shaved.

Gabrielle, here is my take on the subject. I have been cleaned shaved for a very, very long time. I see my doctor twice per year and he has never once flinched or said a word.

Why should any doctor say anything? It's not like we cut off our hands or feet, or been self destructive. Hair is something to deal with on a regular basis regardless of where it grows. We trim the hair on top of our heads. Some of us shave our faces. So what is all of the worry about removing the short hairs too? After all, it keeps growing back to annoy us anyway.

I suppose there was a lot of fuss centuries ago when adult males started shaving their faces. Do you think there were guys saying, "What will my family, friends, and neighbors say when they see my face shaved? Do you suppose they will think I'm trying to look effeminate?"

Doctors provide medical care and not opinions on personal style preferences. I hope this helps all who worry.

Gabrielle,
Yes, this thread is more helpful to me than you know....I don't wear shorts often at all in the summertime, but when I do I'm in what I'd call 'mixed company' and not usually around family or anyone that really matters, that is the only time anyone would see my legs. Just to let you know, I did finally shave my legs a couple-three weeks ago, and I absolutely love it. I started out with the lower legs and the next night went ahead and finished both legs....actually I'm really considering my 'bikini area' also... and I've thought about shaving my chest, but there is not alot there anyway.

As far as the doctors and nurses seeing...trust me, they have seen alot of everything and for all they know, my girlfriend prefers it that way....besides, I've heard that the high school kids are actually "trimming" certain areas now, but I'm not for sure on that one.

As far as the doctors caring whether or not I shave...I pay them enough when I do see them that I don't really care what they think. My doctor is nothing but professional and wouldn't ask or care why I shaved and I'm pretty sure 99.9% of doctors are like that, and if they aren't they probably shouldn't be doctors.

The biggest thing I'd like to say is that this site and it's wonderful members are what finally convinced me to shave....I see nothing wrong with it at all and I've seen totally (seemingly) straight manly men with legs less hairy than mine, so I'm not worried about it at all!
Thank you for the great topic, Gabrielle!:hugs:

It;s not the family GP or their nurses that I have gotten stairs from but the specialist, my heart specialist is an old goat. In defense of other specialist thow the nurses (male) at my stress test ( was underdressed and had all the do dads on my chest) were every profressional. The thing is only the girls and boys are shaved (things are only OK with SO, don't want to put it).

I went in to my doctor for a rash on my legs and he asked if I shaved and I said yes. That was that.

Suzanne I will agree I very rarely wear shorts as I am not too fond of male shorts. Even in the summer in 90*+ you will see me in jeans lol
About the only time you will see me in shorts is when im on my bike, and thats because they are padded and keep me cool.

The doctor should ask if you removed your body hair to eliminate possible medical conditions. And your answer should be just a simple yes, no need to explain and I think it is common for anyone to do it nowdays.

That is true. I was actually hoping someone would mention my clean shaved body though. I honestly wanted to see where the conversation would go and how much courage I might have if I sensed the possibility to explain who I am.

But nothing was mentioned. I think it is best that no one thinks twice about it... at least not in the medical community.

I REALLY hope some of you who are pondering shaving will take the plunge. No one has ever given me a hard time. Not even at work. I used to get made fun of for my hairy arms and hands. Guess what - NO ONE noticed when I started shaving them! And if they did, I really wouldn't care. I probably would not tell them the true reason why (and risk loosing my job), but I honestly would not care if they did notice.

Shave it if you want to. Don't let "what would people say" hold you back. Chances are they won't say a thing. :)

I am fully shaved, have femmy tattoos and piercings, wear long acrylic nails, shaped eyebrows, long hair, and permanent eye and lip color ... although I wear boy clothes much of the time, I certainly can't pass fully for a vanilla male when naked. In the summer of 2001, I went to the emergency room with abdominal pains and was in the hospital for nine days for urgent open heart surgery. I won't say nobody batted an eye at my appearance, but virtually everyone was very caring and professional, and a few took a real interest, talking genuinely about nail polish and makeup and tattoos and such. The only one who acted as if he would rather I hadn't intruded into his space was actually my cardiologist, an old, conservative creep who, I'm told, found a way to make just about all of his patients uncomfortable, and just found my appearance a particularly good excuse in my case. (Karma can be a bitch -- he was fired a year or two later for carrying on a torrid affair with one of his nurses.)

Since then, I haven't tried to hide anything about my lifestyle from my medical providers, and in a non-emergency situation, I would certainly report and distance myself from anyone who didn't treat me with reasonable respect. So far I haven't had to do that, and my primary care doc, a young female if it matters, is totally cool about it all and always has interesting (and often humorous) comments to make about my latest feminization and bodyart ventures when she sees me. I won't be seeing her again until the summer of 2010 (she's on sabbatical for a year), and hope to have breast implants before then ... it'll be interesting to hear what she has to say about that!

Been totally clean shaven below the neck for over 20 years. First did it because my legs had to be bare to look good in shear nylons. Quickly advanced to doing my whole body including my groin and butt. Moved onto a depilator about 18 years ago because the constant shaving, like evry time I dressed, was just a pain. Now I only have to shave once every two weeks or longer and the hair that does regrow after yeqars of epillating is very, very light. Just love the look and feel especially becasue I like to wear thong panties and shear thigh highs. They don't hide anything. Also, even just after shaving, I could still feel the drag from the stubble (especially a day later) as I slid my nylons up my legs. Just didn,t look good with a lot of hair down there and the feeling of nylons is sooooo good.
I live in Florida and wear shorts the year around and tank tops most of the time plus swim often in the summer. Nobody has ever said anything even when I had to get all new doctors and was hospitalized a few times over that whole period and was seen totally naked for tests and operations. Totally comfortable with being hairless.
I guess the most awkward moment was my wifes. I used to keep my toenails polished all of the time (don't now as I wear sandals all of the time and it would make my wife uneasy). One evening I passed out at home (diabetic coma) and the second thing she did after calling for an ambulance was to take off all of the deep red nail polish I was wearing.

I had a similar pain in my lower left side. I would come for several days then disapate. A couple of years back, one of the episodes got so bad I could hardly stand up...so went to ER. As you said, lots of test, cat scans, ets. It turned out to be Diverticulitis (probably not spelled correctly). They gave me some meds and it went away...for the time. Its a cronic condition where small pockets develope in the intestine wall which then catch small food particles. Nuts, seeds and small chunks of vegitables are the prime culprets. You might google the malidy and see what you can find out. I dnon't think there is a cure (surgery as last resort)...but watching what you eat can help avoid the flare-ups. I haven't noticed it like before, since that episode and eat what I want...which is everything. Get it checked!!!

Good Luck

I've been completely shaved nose to toes for a few years now. I have a wound on my leg that has taken forever to heal so I've been regularly seeing my doctor and therapists for it.
I always make sure my legs are shaved before the appointments, IMO there is nothing worse than hairy legs (or arms, chest, back, etc).

Ok. I too used to be self concious about shaving and being clean shaven in public with shorts or at the beach or what ever... I'm in my mid 20's and have typical normal early 20's to mid 30's friends, some have mentioned oah you shave? Yeah, I do, I don't like hair. NO ONE has even flinched or asked any thing beyond that. I have been shaving down to my toes regularly for the past 4 years or so. Recently went to a dermatologist for a little spot that was on my thigh, I wanted to make sure it wasn't something more serious that just a darker pigmination little spot, smaller than a dime, and it wasn't anything and went away shortly after. The doc didn't say anything or didn't act in any other way other than normal, and everything was cool...

So, whether it is at the pool, beach, playing ball, friends, family, docs or anything else in between it has been a NON issue :D

I've shaved my legs & underarms for years and nobody has ever said a word to me (except my mouthy sister in law but who cares). I went to the doc today for a minor procedure (skin tag removals) that exposed most of me.

I was wearing panties for the first time, too--with a big pink "Hanes" labels on the waistband, no less, and she (doctor) said nada. I almost wanted her to say something!

I agree with all above--I think we're past this issue now. They see everything in the doctor's office now. Panties? Shaved? No Biggie.

If you think all doctors will not same something about bare skin you might be wrong. Although this is not exactly the same situation it is still similar enough in my mind that I thought I should mention it. It is about my wife and hfer visit to the doctor. My wife shave her pubic area completely and has for years. On one of her visits to a new doctor he asked her if the bare vaginal area was natural to which she said no. That was the end of the discussion. By the way, my wife was in her 50s when that happened. As for myself I never really worry about what the doctor my see or say. I've been in for visits with my panties on and and shaved legs and had him do the finger exam. He even once commented 'just let them fall' when I was trying to not let the panties fall all the way to the floor during the exam. The one time I was embarassed by my shaved legs was one summer when my son-in-law was visiting. We were all sitting around visiting when he turns to me, I was wearing shorts, and said 'Do you shave your legs?' I was so stunned that all I could say was 'I hate hairy bodies'! He was half drunk at the time and maybe doesn't even remember it. In any case he has never mentioned it again. On the other hand I tend not to shave in trhe summer because I have a lot of family that would not approve.

My legs are shaved almost all of the time nowadays. I couldn't care less who sees them and/or comments on it. But like you said, nobody cares to comment, afterall they have 'bigger fish to fry'.

I walked around our house wearing 3/4 length (just below the knee) army style pants for two days this week with my legs clearly on show and none of the children said a word about me wearing 10den hosiery (stockings actually). They were darker than is fashionable for women and so quite noticable, it was almost an experiment to see if I could 'get away with it'. I had to visit the shops, help the chimney sweep and meet neighbors, nobody said a word. Even the teenage lads and lasses at the take-away kept quiet about it, and I know they noticed my legs, well certainly the girls, they stared at them and the realization of "OMG he's wearing tights" was clear to see on their faces.

hay girls if I could care any less what people think of my shaved body I be dead. I have been wanting to go to the doc to get some moles removed under my arms. They some times hurt and once in a while will discolor and swell up two or three times there size. So when I go I will be dressed as Christina for it. I don't have a famliy doc but I go to this one place and they know me a little. The doc said my med won't cover the removel if there is no pain with them. Now there is. So this will be the frist time to the doc em fem. Should be fun. Oh for the girls out there whom are scared to shave or paint there toes or finger nails , I have had my long acrilic nails painted since Halloween last year. I am a truck driver and I drive all over Canada and the US and the only time I had guys comment on them was when they were brite pink LOL go figger Eh. And only 5guys said any thing and they were like why do you paint your nails I say cuz I think there prettier that way and that ends it all. So if you want to do something then do it as long as it's not againest the law that is LOL. Huggs

i really feel that worrying about shaved legs is all about self perception. i have been shaved for years since i am a triathlete and so i never think for a second that people will call my gay or a cd or anything negetive since i do it for a different reason. it just so happens that i am a cd and enjoy the shaved legs but thats beside the point. if your worried how others will feel, you will feel self concsious and feel uncomfortable.

everyone at work has seen my shaved legs and arms and they just think i'm metro and a swimmer. people ( if they do notice ) BIG IF!!!, really are not that apt to thinking your a cd just cuz you shave your legs. now if you wear girls flip flops and have pink toes, they may begin assuming. lol.

Family would not approve... of what you do with your own body? Think about that for a while. Doesn't that sound a little absurd?
