I was given the o.k. to begin hormones, only to find out I have a genetic disorder called factor 5 leidens. It causes me to get blood clots. I have had 5 or six over the last 4 years. I am now on blood thinners for life. My question is, do I have any chance or options left? if so what? They havent said anything encouraging, but it seems I may be doomed to no transition. But I will keep up the hope. Thanks

First of all, if you want to transition it does not need to be accompanied by hormone usage. Transition can occur no matter what if it's something you feel a need to do.

Secondly, only your doctor, or a specialist, can answer the medical question, but there could possibly be options available to you. I'm just not qualified to speculate.

Oh! And welcome to the forum, Spanky! :)

Sorry about you clotting condition. I suppose be glad you are born in a time we have anticlotting drugs. I agree with Sharon. HRT is only a part of transititioning. HRT doesn't magically change your male XY genes to a woman's XX. Testosterone can be reduced through orchiectomy, breasts can be implanted. You likely need years of electrolosis regardless of HRT. So if you want to live as a woman, you likely can get pretty fardown that road.

about a year ago I took spiro and estrofem w/o a dr. It was exciting as I started to feel that I was becoming who I always was. I developed breasts (38A) Six months later I stopped. I was not very smart, because if I was going to go all the way, because I would eventually need a Drs. help, So I went to dr./therapist, told them everything. Thank God I did as I have Factor 5 leidens (I make blood clots) and am on coumadin for life. So please see a Dr. Signed Really Lucky

Do you have two copies of the gene, or just 1?

Anyway, here's a helpful website with doctors answering questions:

Big mistake, I tried spiro and etrogen for six months, and It made me feel wonderful. But I don't recommend it as it is dangerous. In my case very dangerous, because of my factor 5 leidens. But the hormones that flooded my body convinced me that I truly want to transition. I am going to my therapist and she thinks I may be able to take maybe a small dose of hormones. That would make me soooooooo happy! In just 6 months I had a pretty significant growth in my breasts, but more important the hormones had started to closed the gap of who I am and who I need to be.
