Middle child... Right handed. I heard somewhere, probably here that most of us were artists of some sort. I am a musician and back in the day won a scholarship in art. Still kicking myself for not going to Arizona. I still love to play music and some people have said that my 'doodling' looks more like professional artwork than just goofing around.

Hi Leah: If you find that article again please post it. I would like to read it. I am the oldest of nine, Five boys and four girls. They all know but only two have seen. Now there are 4 1/2 boys and 4 1/2 girls. I've been dressing since I was Eight and now I'm 57 but I haven't tried to stop.

Hi everybody, I'm new here and was reading something on a website a while back where this guy said that its usually the oldest son out of the kids who is most likely to crossdress. Well, I am the oldest son out of 5 kids in my family. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother, I am the oldest of all 5 kids. I started dressing when I was around 11 years old and still dress to this day. I am now 36 years old and can't seem to stop. I don't remember what website I was on, but I thought it was pretty interesting that he mentioned the oldest son being the most likely. He hit the nail right on the head for me.

Leah

Hi Leah

Middle Boy/Girl, two older and two younger, But there is a possibility that one of the older ones might CD. But have been out of touch with whole family for many years

Oldest of two (me and my sister) with a single mother.

I've often wondered if my desire to crossdress comes from differences in how we were treated.

I got clearance clothing from K-Mart while my sister had a $50/month budget for clothes (in the late 80's). My mom would tell me that girls clothes cost more.

Since my mom was single, she would say I was "the man of the house", but I didn't get any authority with that. I was supposed to keep my sister out of trouble, but my sister would say "you're not my father" and my mother wouldn't back me up.

If I hit my sister I was warned that I was going to grow up to be a wife-beater, but if my sister hit me I was expected to take it because I was a boy and I was older and bigger.

I was taught to open doors for women and stand up when they stood up at the table and a bunch of other old fashioned chivalrous behavior, but there was nothing in the other direction about women giving respect to men.

Hope this doesn't blow your theory, but I think being born into a family with three older sisters that was so poor that I had to wear hand-me-down clothes til I was 12 probably had something to do with it. <g>

No, seriously, I was the oldest too. You may be onto something.

Yet another oldest here, with a younger brother and sister.

Second most common seems to be the youngest child, but not a lot of middle kids.

I have never thought about it but I am also the oldest. I have three bothers and two sisters and I am the only CDer as far as I know. They all know about me but it does not seem to be a problem. I do look a lot like one of my sisters when I am dressed. I think my mom may have had an influence on my dressing. My being the first born boy and she wanted a girl. I have been told she dressed me occassionally as a girl. I don't remember.

older sister, big tomboy.two older brothers that died as infants, and me ......i often wonder at that small tender age because of my moms loss at not having a girly girl, and the grief of lossing two babys i was somehow her proxy of a girly girl. no real memories of any thing ongoing, just small things i remember from time to time........coments?

Oldest of four here, though I don't think anyone in my family has any suspicion whatsoever of my CDing desires... just my good friends. So hey, it could be possible someone else is hiding it too - I'd love to know about it if that's the case!

Interestingly enough my sister (the youngest) has quite a bit of a male personality in her while at the same time being naturally attractive and outgoing in a more typical GG way. I think she could seriously hold her own in baseball-related arguments with the most prominent ESPN anchors and commentators in particular... it's scary! I'm glad her wardrobe's a lot more toward the casual side than being overly girly, which made the temptation of raiding her closet a whole lot less strong than it might have been otherwise. It's always been funny to me that I love the thought of wearing dresses and skirts quite a bit more than she does, as she only reluctantly wears them on special occasions. Hmm... bi-gendered parallels?

oldest of 4.

This is a long thread, and i haven't gone through it so this may have been brought up:

There was a scientist i saw on a news show I saw a while back who speculated that when 2 sibling are born close together within a year apart, the second sibling is more likely to have fem qualities because of excess amounts of estrogen in the womb. I have a gay cousin who i think might also be transgendered who is only 10 months younger than his older brother. I know CDing isn't the same thing, but its all in the same amazing ballpark. Just some thoughts..

I am a middle Child. Older Brother, Younger sister. I have always, as far back as I can remember enjoyed sneakin her clothes, and tryin em on. We went to a catholic elementary school too. So those cute little school girl clothes, I got to wear them.. nice... I still love to wear them.. But, yeah, I think for me, I know i didnt get much attention growing up, it was always what the oldest or the baby wanted. But I dont think that had any bearing on why I dress.. I think I just have a little something extra in the chromosome dept. That makes me feel the need to follow what society deems feminine. The same as any girl growing up, watching what means to be a woman, and wanting that.

Oldest of three - one brother and one sister... maybe I bonded with my mother too much? Maybe my Dad didn't do the role modelling right? Maybe it's genetics...?

Hope the responses give some data!

Would love to know the answer!

Its interesting but I would have to say it's a hypothesis and nothing more. I have an older brother who as far as i know doesn't cross dress and really isn't the type that would, I am his exact opposite and I have had a basic course psychology and I would have to say there is a much deeper reason for why it is we do the things we do.

Only child here.

I have read that oldest boys, only boys, or male only children seem to have a propensity to cross-dress but I haven't really cooked the statistics to know for sure. I think you have to factor in alot of random data like parent-child relationship, environment, and - most importantly perhaps - individual temperment to get a more accurate view of developmental causes for cross-dressing. While birth order is interesting, as this thread itself has shown, the oldest boy=CD correlation likely isn't the 'be all, end all' kind of explanation we are hoping for.

Best,
Gunda

The oldest son more likely to cross dress, really? I'm the youngest of 3, having two older sisters who were complete teen glamour girl role models for me. Following in their footsteps seemed far more natural than tossing a football or anything else expected. Seemed that this would be a common thread for most crossdressers, but like so many things in this crazy life, there are no easy answers. If there are, could someone please tell me?:heehee:

Hugs...Joni Mari

I can believe that. For instance I've always had light-colored body hair.

I'm the oldest of two boys and AFAIK the only one that crossdresses. I did have a lot of female influence growing up as my mom & dad were divorced though the women in my childhood weren't the most feminine (rarely wore dresses for instance, have one female relative that's a tomboy and wears skirts only if she has to and hates it then).

I'm also a lefty!

I have a younger brother and I have been dressing since I can remember(that goes back a long time sigh sigh)) Interesting theory but I really don't think its valid!!!! Personally I truly believe that we are "wired" before birth due to either hormonal changes within our mothers' body or a temporary emotional situation that initiated our need to crossdress. Actually I feel much more comfortable:) when I am dressed as a female and want to remain that way.:battingeyelashes:

I can't say I've ever heard that theory. The more common one I've found is the scenario where the boy as a child was consistently surrounded with more female influence than male. I find that holds true for several TG folks I know.

What an interesting read... I am an only child, but I am left handed, so I am not so sure as to where I fit in this puzzle. As for being left handed, I am a strange mix of left and right. I am the older of two boys. I am not sure if my brother CDs but I am beginning to suspect it. Every year he comes up with great Halloween costumes and then sends photos to me. This past year, he was was dressed as a woman. I asked him leading questions that would open the door so that he could tell me if the clothes and wig were his. This is the first year he has not replied about his "costume." I'd be happy if he does CD because we would have more to talk about. :)

cross dressing is genetic in some cases because it runs in families.

I haven't read about the older child being more likely to be a crossdresser, but I read years ago somewhere (TG Tapestry I think) that male only children are far more likely to be crossdressers. I have no idea if that is true, but I am an only child and a crossdresser. There is no known history of tg behavior in either side of my family, I am the only one as far as I know.

He hit the nail right on the head for me.

try search terms like : birth order and sexual orientation etc

My searches find most sexuality birth order research is on male homosexuality and
trans-sexualism with little on crossdressing/ transvestism.

There are various schools of thought on the birth order effects on sexual orientation.
Different studies find different things and I would take all of this with metric tonnes of salt.

A common belief was the more older brothers a man had - the greater his probability of being homosexual. Other studies refuted this. Interestingly, little academic interest seems to exist on lesbianism and birth order.

Regardless, the studies that do exist are not controlled ,not scientific, rely on self reporting which can't be substantiated and they have very small numbers . Futher, be sure to look at the date of the study - much of this malarkey is 40 + years old from an era where anything but a wife and a white picket fence was regarded as mental illness - this includes homosexuality,trans-sexuality and transvestism.

Modern medical thinking holds such views to be biased and not based on science.

All this combines to form very, very, very weak scientific conclusions - so please do not think - OMG That's Me ! LOL

Here is a link from the National Library of Medicine, NIH:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1626369/

you can search for others use transvestism, crossdressing etc as search terms

Oh and - I am the baby of the family.

cheers

not the way I know it. I'm the second youngest son. From what I know of birth studies, gender differences of all kindsare more common with younger male siblings. there's some interesting research on that subject.

Oldest of two sons.

But there's another variable I'd like to see controlled for. My father was much older than the mean (>50 years) and my sainted mother somewhat older (>35 years). Anecdotal evidence connects these parameters with being gender enhanced.

Anybody else with an older mom and pop here?

that nobody will read this...but I have to say it anyway:

Common Sense: When a couple is having their first baby (who will eventually be the only or the oldest), what sex does each one secretly wish for?

As a father of a first born, I was secretly rooting for a boy, so that I could teach him baseball, golf, fishing and other manly activities. (ok, I yield to stereotypical thinking)

I'm not sure and never asked my wife, but I could easily imagine the opposite for a woman hoping to have a daughter as a first child. Yes, I know, "as long as the baby's healthy."

So, I had a daughter. And had I known at the time of birth that she would turn out to be the person she is now, I would have said, "to hell with a son."

I did try to teach her how to play baseball, how to golf, how to fish. And, although she tried and was moderately successful, I didn't push her and I have no regrets.

I can attest that my mother wanted a girl and I sensed this at a very early age. It is supported by pictures in scrapbooks of my early life.

So, in my case, what my mom really wanted, I wasn't.
In my efforts to please my mother, did I finally become the daughter she never had? Maybe not all at once, maybe over time. Maybe like a young child learning a second language more easily than an older child or adult, did I secretly learn/try/want to become what my mother wanted most?

You don't have to answer. But you're right, my answer is, "Yes."

I am the oldest of 3, left-handed, stressed-out, cd-tg-ts? and I think that the scenario I described can contribute to an edge of the oldest boy having a proclivity towards CD.

...someone did read your post. Good points and well said.

I concur with the belief that transvestism, especially the fetishistic type, is more a learned behavior than transgenderism, which I suspect is more of a condition of birth. (As, I believe, is homosexuality.) How we learn it is an interesting question. Some times it is more obvious than others. But, a careful review of ones early years, seen through the prism of "Learning Theory", may give some insight into the etiology of the condition. And, not just to "fix" it. I know where mine came from. And I thoroughly enjoy it and have no interest in changing.

And, yes, I am the oldest of 4.

I was very intrigued by this theory the first time I read about it. After all, I am also a first-born in my family. Could there be a pattern that helped explain CDing and let us understand a bit more about ouselves?

It got me going all over the place, but unfortunately, I came back empty-handed. I was not able to find credible evidence to back up that theory anywhere, even though empirical data seems to uphold such perception.

One can see that by simply asking around. Take this thread, for example. I went through all 395 posts to date and 222 of the respondents are first-borns (only children excluded). I've done this before in a different forum and results were similar.

Obviously, it doesn't mean that ALL CDs are first-borns, but for some reason there seems to be a weird trend pointing in that direction. I've always taken dressing to come from a genetic pre-disposion in our brains. In my view, that should distribute CDers more equally along the order-of-birth curve.

However, if this theory holds, proving that a majority of CDers are indeed first-borns, could it mean that dressing is psychologically acquired/induced in early childhood? Could it be the combination of genetics and psychology?

Wish there were more research on this.

Oldest of four. Two brothers, one sister.

Don't know if my mother influenced me to be girlie, but my dad sure did push me to be more boyish. Not sure if this was a reaction to something my mom was doing or if there was something else?

I have no idea what that could be, but I remember over hearing many conversations by adult family and friends. The topic always seemed to be addressing what was best for me. Like I had some "special" condition or something.

Maybe I read more into it than there was, but I'll never know since my parents have been gone for many years.
