Hi everybody, I'm new here and was reading something on a website a while back where this guy said that its usually the oldest son out of the kids who is most likely to crossdress. Well, I am the oldest son out of 5 kids in my family. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother, I am the oldest of all 5 kids. I started dressing when I was around 11 years old and still dress to this day. I am now 36 years old and can't seem to stop. I don't remember what website I was on, but I thought it was pretty interesting that he mentioned the oldest son being the most likely. He hit the nail right on the head for me.

I'm 36 and the oldest boy in my family. Then again, I'm the only son. I have an older sister, but she looks like a young boy if that counts...

I think there was a lot of influence by my mom though. My sister and I shared a room growing up that was decorated quite femininely. That and my mom's attention was always focused on what my sister wanted too. It still is to this day- but I'm past that now.

Hi Leah. I read this thing about the oldest boy somewhere also. It was based on some kind of rough study by some psychologist. I've tried to find more information on it, but no luck.

I'm also the oldest of seven. With five brothers and one sister. Boy would they have a laughing fit if they new my true colors - giggles -.

Nope but how about the oldest boy secretly believing himself to be a girl who is a tomboy and secretly dressing while he was growing up?;):)

OMG, I am so seeing a trend. I am the oldest son, in my family it was boy (Me! Hi there!), boy, girl. I also vaguely remember somewhere seeing a similar study but can't recall specifics. It so sux getting old. The study had something to do with first male births not getting quite as much of a testosterone hose down en utero during the final trimester as subsequent births of male siblings...or some such thing. Really, getting old bites.

Hugs...Joni Mari

I never heard that before, but I am the oldest boy of three with one older sibling-a SISTER. I don't know what, if anything that has to do with me being a crossdresser, but I thought I'd through it out there for sake of the survey.

I, too, am the oldest but, this is another theory of "why" that is purely coincidental. There are lots of theories around about why people crossdress but, few things (if any) that can be proved.

Leah

I'm the oldest sibling in my family. I'm not sure that has anything to do with it though. I've been in contact with other cd's who've talked about their older siblings to me in conversation, which makes them NOT the oldest. I believe it's the luck of the draw in the gene cocktail when as the fertilized egg transforms into a human baby.

I am now 36 years old and can't seem to stop.

Do you want to? Hell, my crossdressing is what I love most about who I am. I'd be depressed as hell if it ever went away. Struggled with it all my life, but once I accepted myself, I found great strength and happiness in this part of my life. :)

Given the average number of children in mid-20th century American families, the probability is about 75% that any male child will be the first-born son in his family. Therefore, to be statistically significant, you would have to show that something like 90% to 95% of crossdressers are first-born sons -- since three quarters will be by chance alone -- a high standard of proof which is not yet illustrated by the poll here.

This demographic fact has been use to support a lot of nonsensical conjectures about first-born children over the years.

(I'm an only child of an only child, and proud of it!)

- Diane (knowing all those statistics classes she took in grad school would be useful sooner or later!)

Maybe it's the stress and the responsibility that olders typically bare.
Also oldests ( I believe I heard ) are more often the most "successful".
And Success brings responsibility, brings stress, brings need for stress relief.
And what better relief than to CD, at least until exitting the safety of the closet.

Logical ?

I am the youngest male. The problem with these kind of numbers is that they are skewed by their very own data. Every family that has a CD male but is also the only male, automatically chalks one up for the oldest male. So if things are spread evenly, the oldest male will most certainly have the highest odds.

I seem to remember a similar thread here about crossdressers being left handed. Well all of the lefthanders came in and replied while I'll bet a number of righthanders went to the next subject. Hmmmmm....

I am the youngest of 3, [older brother and sister]
But we are 5 years apart and according to research that changes a lot.

I'm left handed, and so is my grandmother, mother and sister.
My grandfather, father and brother are right handed.

So it seems being left handed in my family is a female trait.
So I guess I fit right in as one of the girls, lol

I though the research showed the younger ones were more likely?? IDK - I wonder if this is just for CD'ers or if it is the same for us TS's as well?

Scarily accurate... I too am the oldest sibling. Though I grew up mostly with my mom & sister which I would say was the main influence to my xdressing. My story of where it all started is similar to yours Leah, I am 35 and started when I was 10, but we've all done our purging... now I just can't seem to stop despite being happily married.

Leah, why don't you - (a) convert this to a poll; and (b) change the question to read first born child who is also male likey to crossdress? I want to say add an option for left-handed or right-handed, but am not convinced there is merit there. However, it would be interesting to extract information from a sizeable cross-section of society to see if left-handers have a stronger connection with the feminine within them.

To answer your original question, I'm the older of 2, the other being a younger sister. i see many more"masculine" features in her. To be frivoluos, i've hated my uni-brow and took care of it whilst she seems to have no issues with hers. :D

A hasty and hacky review of the answers so far shows no correlation:

All of those who are the only male child reported being the oldest male child (isn't that amazing:D)
Of those from families with 2 boys, 60% were the older, and 40% were the younger
From families with 3 boys, the respondents were spread across the three positions, with slight tendency towards older
One family with 4 boys, respondent was oldest boy
Four families with 5 boys, the tendency was towards being one of the youngest boys
One family with 6 boys, respondent was oldest
One family with 9 boys, respondent was youngest
Amongst those who did not say how many boys were in the family, there was a split amongst those reporting to be the oldest and those reporting to be the youngest.

As pointed out earlier, most boys in small to middle-sized families are the oldest boy (simply because they are either the only boy, or there are only two boys).

Well, I'm the oldest son but the middle sibling out of seven, with three sisters before me and tow sisters and a brother after. I guess that would make me the oldest son in my family. I was seven yrs old the first time I wore panties and a dress (on a dare), and with three older sisters and plenty of girls clothes to experiment with, I became the family crossdresser. I don't know how accurate that study is but it fits my family situation.

Third born male of four, so not fitting with the idea which Leah was quoting.

However I found a paper from the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Vol. 38, No. 5. pp. 543-551. 1997 By Prof. Kenneth Zucker and others titled "Sibling Sex Ratio of Boys with Gender Identity Disorder" with a different conclusion, that does square up with my own situation.

I'll quote from the abstract:

"Sibling sex ratio (the ratio of brothers to sisters) was calculated for 444 boys with gender identity disorder (or with behaviors consistent with this diagnosis)." using data "from several researchers with expertise with this disorder and from the English language case report literature between 1938 and 1995". This suggested that "Among the probands with at least
one sibling, the results showed that boys with gender identity disorder had a significant excess of brothers to sisters, 131.1:100, when compared with the expected secondary sex ratio of 106:100. The excess of brothers replicated a previous study by Blanchard, Zucker, Bradley, and Hume (1995), in which the sibling sex ratio was 140.6:100. Further analyses showed that the probands were born later relative to their brothers than
they were relative to their sisters."

So.......who is correct? Are these two points of view incompatible? It seems so to me
:2c:
Ann Rosa

p.s Perhaps the "let out clause" in reconciling these two views comes in that Leah's is talking about cross-dressing per se, and the study by Zucker et. al is about those with "Gender Identity Disorder". Maybe someone would clarify if cross dressing always implies G.I.D or not. I suspect the answer is "not" :idontknow:

The excess of brothers replicated a previous study by Blanchard, Zucker, Bradley, and Hume (1995), in which the sibling sex ratio was 140.6:100. Further analyses showed that the probands were born later relative to their brothers than
they were relative to their sisters."

That fits me perfectly. Eldest brother, brother, brother, sister and then me. Apparently, my Mother wanted a second girl to round off the family. I would've preferred a 2nd girl too!

This another new factor. In my family as well as being second boy the brother to sister ratio was 450:100. Oh and I'm also a leftie.

Oldest of 4 and right handed. (b,b,g,b)

Before anyone jumps to any conclusions, some distinction should be made and corralated to the different types of CDers. At least transgendered vs. fetish CDing. "Nature" vs. "Nurture", etc.

The problem with any results drawn from Psychology studies based on review of patient populations is that they are not double blind. They use people who have experienced enough distress in their lives that they have presented themselves to the Mental Health System. They can only guess at the rest of the population who are not that distressed by our CDing.

The first page in my college statistics textbook said: "There are three kinds of lies. Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics."

I am number five in our family of eight children. My parents had four boys and then stopped for four years. Then they tried for a sister but had me instead. They didn't know how close they came to having a girl.
Two years later they had my little sister. Four years later they tried for another girl but had a boy. Then two years later that tried for the last time but had my baby brother. So out of eight children they had only one girl, and one girl wannabe, me. I'm pretty sure that I am the only transgender child in the bunch. Our life was much like the Walton's on TV. I wonder about those boys. Leanne

I had almost the same situation as you, except that I am the oldest and my father was a crossdresser. I to started to dress at around 8 before I knew he was a cd.

I organized in the past a poll about birth order in the thread quoted below.

You can see my interpetations in the thread, and for instance in the #93 post in it.

http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82380&page=4

I revisited such polls about birth order, a few weeks ago, and I led a comprehensive thread about it.
The discussions and conclusions are issued on my Flickr's group (700 members) : "Knowing about crossdressing : interpretations - facts - results"

http://www.flickr.com/groups/knowing-about_cding/

To make it short.
. Obviously "an only child" and "a first born" have not the same meaning.

. There exists a definite trend. However it is a slight trend.

. When comparing first born to last born in a family or 2 or more than 2 childs the ratio is 60% first born vs. 40% last born. The difference is small, yet statistically significant. Such results are repeatable by further polls.

. I showed why this result is of theoretical importance.

For serious discussing about such a subject - and other ones - I invite you to come and see what we are currently publishing in our group.

I've heard that x out of 100 are CD'ers and that people with stressful jobs tend to be CD'ers vs. those of non-stressful jobs. I often wonder when I see people if they CD or not. I do constantly look for tell-tale signs. Anyway as for the thread....

I can tell you I'm the oldest of 2 siblings and I do have a very stressful and very macho job. I do feel relieved though when I become Ashlee and all of the stress melts away for that time.

I think there's more to it than just being the oldest. If you've read much about the dynamics of dysfunctional families you've probably heard about the oldest child as being the overperformer, the one who tries to make the screwed up family look OK.

I've always wondered if the incredible pressure this child feels along with a poor male role model makes the female role more attractive in getting away from having to be the hero and instead going with the soft, attractive, love me please female role.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it applies to me anyway.

I was the middle child of seven children. But now that I think about it,my oldest bother did grow his hair long back in the sixties. I thought it was just a hippie thing. And he did steal some of my sister's birth control pills. I thought he was just trying to get high back then ,I didn't know what they were for. And he always called me names like "fag" and "pussy". Maybe it was because he was himself suffering from somekind of inner conflicts.

Unfortunately he died in a motor cycle accident many years ago. So I can't ask him. But before he passed away we were very close. He was the best man at my wedding. I really miss him.

Birth order and ratio of brothers to sisters in transsexuals

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RICHARD GREEN a1c1
a1 Gender Identity Clinic, Department of Psychiatry, Imperial College, School of Medicine, Charing Cross Hospital, London, UK

Abstract

Background. As previous studies with homosexual males have revealed a later birth order, more older brothers and more brothers than sisters, this research was extended to a large series of transsexual males and females, some of whom are homosexual.

Methods. The male sample comprised 442 male-to-female transsexuals, subdivided by sexual partner preference: 106 homosexual, 135 heterosexual, 155 bisexual and 46 asexual. One hundred female-to-male transsexuals were also studied: 75 homosexual, 16 bisexual, seven heterosexual and five asexual. Birth order was computed by both Slater's Index and Berglin's Index.

Results. Homosexual male-to-female transsexuals have a later than expected birth order and more older brothers than other subgroups of male-to-female transsexuals. Each older brother increases the odds that a male transsexual is homosexual by 40%.

Conclusions. Hypotheses explaining the extension of prior findings to this large sample of transsexual males include a progressive maternal immunization to the male foetus either through the H-Y antigen or protein-bound testosterone or alterations in foetal androgen levels in successive pregnancies, all modifying male psychosexual development. Data on the sexual orientation of younger brothers of homosexual male transsexuals in this study are not consistent with the progressive immunization hypothesis.

For myself, I am the youngest of 3 children..:battingeyelashes:

My sister is the oldest, and my brother is 12 years older than me..and they both have no gender issues what so ever..

LOL Anyway yeap I am the oldest and have siblings but since this part of the forum is open to google don't want to say too much more about private family stuff that might help someone figure out who I am.

Being the middle child of five of us, two older brothers and two younger sisters, I often wondered if that had some bearing on my being given a twisted blend of mostly male traits (between the legs, thick hair all over, manly voice) but some female traits as well (large breasts, soft shoulders, shapely legs, and sensitivity and strong feelings) Go finger. I guess I'm the exception to convention here and my brothers are just all time regular guys.
Cheers!

It's hard to get reliable statistics for a thing that's usually kept in secret. But besides that, it seems unlikely. The oldest male in the pack tends to be the dominant Alpha.

I'm not the case anyway since I'm the middle of three males.
Unless my older brother is a CD and still in the closet... (nah!... can't be... I would have noticed if he were wearing the same mom's undies that I did )

Has anybody heard of the oldest boy in the family being the most likely to crossdress

I’m the youngest of the family, but the only boy*. In fact, I’m the only boy in this entire branch of my family tree. Right now I’m sawing that branch off while I’m standing on it…:heehee:

*You may want to look into that other “theory” about having older sisters…

Another oldest boy (and oldest child) here. I wish we could create a poll on here to see the results of all of these pages :/ I'm so curious.

These wild theories aren't worth wasting time on. It's called coincidence. Youngest child of the family if you must know.

I am the oldest of three boys in the family and have been enjoying how I look as a girl -- and now a woman -- since age 11. And like several other girls here, I am also a lefty. Not sure what a scientific survey would say though!

There is research that suggests the opposite on chances of men being gay if the have older brothers.

Anything is possible, but you'd need to do a lot of research on a subject that a lot of people are very secretive about, so it's going to be hard to get any real statistics.

I am the oldest (62) and a cross dresser since I was mabe 5 or 6.
BUT my younger brother hit the family a few years ago with a total sex change. It so schocked the family so much that I am still afraid to tell him or anybody else that I crossdress at home. My wife is OK with it as long as I stay in agreed boundrys. I know him, he would most likley put up a bill-board in front of my house.

Leah

im the oldest son and i crossdress and i am actually a girl on the inside.
i was 4 years old and i was found in the girls section of walmart saying
"mommy can i have this?" holding onto a church dress.

Youngest of three boys, eldest is twelve years older than me, the next is two years older. Neither of the other two CD to the best of my knowledge. As to the youngest boy being gay, well I class myself as Lesbian, if that counts...

Youngest of two, right handed; older brother does not CD. Dad was a CD, and only child, left handed. My son is oldest of two, right handed, and CDs.

Wish I knew more family history, as I suspect it's genetic, but from which family line I don't know.

I am 3rd to youngest and I have 7 siblings 1 sister and 7 brothers with my sister being the oldest. My oldest brother is not a cder; I am the only crossdresser that I know of in my family. I am also right handed as well as my father. The only left hander in my family is my brother that is above me in the family tree.
