This was posted on Live Journal's Transgender community board with the request that it be reposted as widely as possible and is primarily for the Detroit Area - the two known victims were working as prostitutes but there is a third victim about whom no detail has been released yet. Why post here? If this is a serial killer going after transwomen he may not be choosy about who he picks as long a they are Transgender - If you go out to clubs, bars, etc. Be Careful!
On May 25, 2009, the slain body of Foxy, born Curtis Ivy, was found in Highland Park. Foxy was fatally shot in the back of the head. That same night, another transgender woman was the victim of an attempted shooting in Detroit. Both victims are African American transgender women under the age of 35 who are reported by police to be commercial sex workers.
The police do not know if these crimes are related or if the crimes are anti-transgender.
The victim who survived her attack stated that the perpetrator was an African American man of medium complexion in his 20’s with a small frame and bad teeth. He was wearing khaki pants, carried a 9 mm gun and drove a dark-colored Dodge Charger.
LGBT organizations and police urge transgender women, especially commercial sex workers, to:
• Travel in pairs;
• Trust your gut – if your gut says not to go with the person – don’t;
• If you are alone, don’t tell the person you are going with that you are alone;
• If you are alone, tell a friend where you are going, how long you will be gone and call them when you return;
• Carry a cell phone for emergency contact to 911;
• Write down the license plate number when getting into the car of a stranger;
• Write down the license plate number when a friend gets into the car of a stranger;
• If attacked, yell, scream and create a scene;
• If the attacker has a weapon, use objects to try to protect yourself and try to keep the weapon away from your head, heart and hip.
If you have any information, please contact Melissa Pope at 313-537-7000, ext. 313, or via e-mail at [email protected].
