This was posted on Live Journal's Transgender community board with the request that it be reposted as widely as possible and is primarily for the Detroit Area - the two known victims were working as prostitutes but there is a third victim about whom no detail has been released yet. Why post here? If this is a serial killer going after transwomen he may not be choosy about who he picks as long a they are Transgender - If you go out to clubs, bars, etc. Be Careful!

On May 25, 2009, the slain body of Foxy, born Curtis Ivy, was found in Highland Park. Foxy was fatally shot in the back of the head. That same night, another transgender woman was the victim of an attempted shooting in Detroit. Both victims are African American transgender women under the age of 35 who are reported by police to be commercial sex workers.
The police do not know if these crimes are related or if the crimes are anti-transgender.
The victim who survived her attack stated that the perpetrator was an African American man of medium complexion in his 20’s with a small frame and bad teeth. He was wearing khaki pants, carried a 9 mm gun and drove a dark-colored Dodge Charger.
LGBT organizations and police urge transgender women, especially commercial sex workers, to:
• Travel in pairs;
• Trust your gut – if your gut says not to go with the person – don’t;
• If you are alone, don’t tell the person you are going with that you are alone;
• If you are alone, tell a friend where you are going, how long you will be gone and call them when you return;
• Carry a cell phone for emergency contact to 911;
• Write down the license plate number when getting into the car of a stranger;
• Write down the license plate number when a friend gets into the car of a stranger;
• If attacked, yell, scream and create a scene;
• If the attacker has a weapon, use objects to try to protect yourself and try to keep the weapon away from your head, heart and hip.
If you have any information, please contact Melissa Pope at 313-537-7000, ext. 313, or via e-mail at [email protected]. We urge any transgender individuals who have been the victim of an assault within the past two years, especially those who have been the victim of a shooting or attempted shooting, to contact Melissa. All calls are confidential

That happened to a local girl here a few years ago. She wasn't a sex worker though. Just a female impersonator. How sad.

Please keep this on the East side of the state. We don't want it over on the West side of Michigan...BJ

I wish I could - but there is no way that it can be done. There has also been some speculation that there may also be a repeat killer in the Sacramento Ca. area. The whole point of my post is that if you go out - no matter where you are - BE CAREFUL! I really don't want to read your name or anyone else's name as part of a Transgender Day of Remembrance service. There are far too many names to be read as it is.

Alice, I dug thru some old avitar to find the picture of the way I like to dress for safety. But usually it because of loose dogs, when I'm out on my three wheel bike. I had a pit bull atach one of my back tires. But a 38 doesn't discriminate.......BJ

I like your avitar picture! Sort of like me when I'm down at my camp in the Ozarks - when out hiking I carry a pistol as well. Haven't had to use it very often - feral dogs are a problem down here and add in the odd snake around camp and it can be handy.

Like I said - it pays to be careful! :2c:

Yet another in a long list of reasons not to live in the greater Detroit area...

OK ok lets not turn this into a Detroit bashing thread.
Its a tragic story, be careful, but don't critisize.

Good advice. Always follow the tips above. And if you're on a 1st date, use a safe call. Have someone call you at regularly scheduled times. If you dont answer, they take action. And let the person you are meeting know there are people looking out for you. Don't ever let being polite get in the way of your safety. Please always be careful.

hugs,

Melissa:)

I agree! It really could happen in any metropolitan area. Just be safe and know your surroundings.

It's a good warning and good advice to use anywhere. This is not just a Detroit problem but a problem everywhere.
