Given the strong interest often shown on these boards for hard numbers, I thought this (http://www.calderdale.nhs.uk/fileadmin/files/Public_Information/Publications/Microsoft_Word_-_Calderdale_Trans_Report_-_March__09.pdf) might be of interest.
It's a very recent survey by an NHS Primary Care Trust (the organisation responsible for providing all local healthcare services) in Calderdale, near Leeds (NE England).
I wouldn't describe it as an easy place to be openly trans - as the report itself says, it's bound to be an underestimate.
But still it equates to a population considering transition of around 1 in 5000, or a total of 12,000 for the whole of the UK (current population >60M).. And services have so far been sized, by the Government, for a population of 5000 in total..
