How far are you girls driving to see a psychiatrist qualified to handle gender issues?
I didn't trust my own town's doctors, because when I was younger I had terrible experiences with them. When my crossdressing was brought up, one mentioned that it was a dark path that led to axe-murdering women in their homes to steal their clothes... and another said I should break some smelling salts under my nose any time I thought of girly stuff like that. *rolls eyes*
Sooo, I drive 2 hours to Atlanta every time I see my therapist, and will be driving up there now however often I need to for bloodwork/etc, when I start HRT.
Anyone else making long trips to see a competent doctor?

Yup, I drive just over an hour to see my therapist and electrolysist and I used to go 2 hours to see a doctor but finally found one just 20 minutes away that was willing to learn about what I needed.

For me it is 2 hours & 45 minutes & well worth it. I am at a point where I believe instead of going every month, it may be 2 or even 3. I am nearing the end of my journey so one can only hope.
To get care from someone who knows what is going on I believe is one of the most important steps in transition.
Take care all.

I'm an hour + away.....i spent alot of $$ with 2 therapists close to home that wasted (i let them waste it) almost 2 years of my life
Knowing their stuff is MUCH more valuable to you
I know one girl who is about 2 and half hours...also many therapists will (once they get to know you) let you do phone calls....not as good as being there but once you get started it can really help to skip a long trip, but still get to talk to somebody
btw...that's a gorgeous pic! good for you!
:daydreaming:
take care

I traveled about 45 minutes to Albany, NY to visit my shrink. The road I took had some nice scenery along the Hudson River, so it was a nice ride and offered some nice pull-offs to eat lunch by the River. I had a really nice guy for a therapist who had a lot of experience with TS's and gave me a good deal of guidance and help. All in all, it was a very good experience and everything went smoothly. I sure hope your experience will be as good as mine was.
Diane.

In fact she is the same therapist that Michele uses. Found her thru an internet search. She is the most caring wonderful person I have met and is very good.. I hit pay dirt on the first try.. :battingeyelashes:

I feel the same way about mine, he's great... and he's a transman, too. So in a way it builds confidence in my decision just seeing him, successfully at the end of this road. He even has helped me find a good non-profit clinic to get all the testing at, with a psychiatrist to get me an Rx for estrogen, too.

It's about an hour one way, but where I live everything is about an hour away.
Hugs,
Cate
I don't drive, dose the train count?
From where I live to charringX is about 2-3 hours each way on public transport, including 1.5 miles walking, 50 minutes train, 1 hour on the underground (or so I made it last time) and about 1.5 miles walking again.

Marlah,
You should check the Pittsburg area. I thought Sheila Kirk (a post op TS) had her practice there and a gender center too. that would be a lot closer than Philly.
I drive about 1:15 minutes to mine so I try to only go every other month.
