Hello girls;

This is my first thread. So much has already been written about... One thing I have had a problem with that has not been been mentioned is pantyhose. I love wearing hose and it makes tucking oh so easy. However, when I wear them for long periods of time they hurt my big toes. I try to wear them loose on my feet when stretching them up but still after about eight hours I feel sore on my big toe right on the nail. Any suggestions...dooes it happen to anyone else?

Trim your toenails? Maybe you have some sort of ingrown nail that when the hose squeeze your toes together (pressing the nail into the skin on the sides of the toe) your toe gets irritated. I have never heard of anyone saying that pantyhose irritate their nails. Another thought. Maybe your shoes are the culprit. Could they be too tight causing your toes to mash together?

Sounds like you are wearing too small a size. Also, do your shoes have toes that end in a severe point? (My toes hurt after wearing anything for eight hours straight.)

I haven't had or ever heard of this happening I'd think it's more the shoe.:hugs:

I get that sometimes even in regular drab socks. It can be shoes but usually it is the way you toenails are. For me it has to do with the way the nail is and its length. When the toenails are like that, I can't stick my toes up under the blankets in bed, I have to lie on my side.

Look really close or have some else look. I need to have someone look cause I don't bend enough to get my eyes to focus. Look for where the redness is. Tha's the clue as to what is happening.

I have very sensitive big toes and often suffer from this problem. In my case, it is due to a rather unusual form of arthritis that mainly affects my knees and ankles, but shows up in several other very specific ways as well. Gout -- also an auto-immune inflammatory disease -- often manifests itself first in the form of exquisitely sensitive big toes.

So my first advice is: See a doctor to eliminate any legitimate medical reason for your sensitive toes. A rheumatologist is the specialist who deals with these diseases, but you'll probably want to see your primary care physician first for a referral. Prescription anti-inflammatory drugs can erase almost all the daily symptoms of these conditions.

But even after all the medical treatments, I still have some sensitivity in my big toes, and decided a year or so ago to see if I could reduce it by wearing something like hose all the time -- hoping I could "toughen up" my toes and reduce the pain a bit. I switched from regular cotton guy socks to women's trouser socks for my everyday wear. These are basically knee-high stockings made out of a heavier knit material like opaque tights. I love them! They have indeed worked to reduce the sensitivity of my toes some, and being much thinner and slipperier than cotton socks, they have taken an effective half a shoe size off my feet -- I can comfortably fit into smaller guy shoes now. And they reach to just below the knees, so there's no chance of any bare skin showing even when my pants cuffs get pulled up a bit -- looks neater in some situations.

I don't think this is a terribly unusual problem, even though not many of the girls here seem to have experienced it. It doesn't (necessarily) mean your shoes or stockings are too tight. I had a conversation with a professional dancer about it once and she said it was common among performers who wear tights a lot. Long-term gentle pressure on the toes just produces this reaction in some people.

Just an idea, but could we be talking about Pantyhose with a lot of spandex in them, something like the old support stockings. Maybe your getting too much squeeze from too much compression.

But, my first guess would be what some of the others have said, your shoes are too narrow and it's squeezing your toes. Most standard women's shoes are a "B" width. The average guy is around a "D" width. Next time you buy, try and find some that are marked with a "W." That's the way they mark them at Payless and Wallyworld. See if that doesn't help.

Peace and Love, Joanie

And it has NOTHING to do with my shoes!

What happens is, your big toenails begin to hurt! And nothing else, rite?
Happened to me the first time I tried to sleep in pantyhose. And several times since then.

As others have said; it could be either too tite pantyhose, or too long toenails, or BOTH!

If my pantyhose feel too tite on my toes, I pull them down from my knee. And leave an inch or so, loose past my toes. Then, I walk around the room barefoot for a bit. If they end up tite on my big toe again, they're GONERS!:Angry3:

I actually have the problem as badly, or worse, when wearing my preferred non-stretch vintage stockings with no spandex at all. The tension of the garters gradually pulls them tighter, all the way to the toes, then they start to hurt. I can usually manage to pull out enough slack around the toes to relieve the discomfort for awhile, but it will come back eventually.

Just another small way we suffer for our beauty!

I have had that happen on an occasion or two, and though it's been quite a while since it happened I think trimming my toenails fixed the problem.

Here is another legitimate reason to go get a good pedicure. I worked several months last year and wore my usual male moccassins to work everyday. Now that was a big change from my barefeet and flip flops that I wear from late April to October. My big toes started hurting like ingrown toenails. I went to the nail salon, explained my problem and asked them to really clean well around my big toes. Great job and almost instant relief.

Another tip is the same as Docrobbysherry's. When you put your nylons on, always pull them up over your ankles and then go back and pull a little slack into theh toe area, then continue putting on your nylons maintaining that extra looseness at the toe area. I like her recommendation to walk around a bit to make sure that the nylons actually fit correctly and do not tighten up around the toes. Good luck.
