Mr Andrews dear, it is that way in Wisconsin. For some reason, Okio, thats what you said right, is yes behind.
How about for those like yourself in the UK?

Thanks big boy, Hugs,
Janelle

I didn't realise there was another state (Wisconsin) that had that before Ohio.

Neither really affect me though- Oklahoma requires 'complete physical sex change' and a letter from the surgeon stating its irreversible -_-

Slicing oneself up/Requiring expensive surgery is a cruel requirement. Rejoice Ohians and Wisconians.

Janelle we are able to change ALL documents BUT birth certificate straight away...we can apply for our Gender Recognition Certificate after 2 years of RLE, that allows us to change our birth certificate

I gripe a lot about Ohio because of the birth certificate issue...and that IS a problem....but I am a happy man today....I have My pre-op doctor appointment on Sept. 23 (to get bloodwork, etc., done)....I am going to pick up the form at the DMV before I go, and, hopefully can get My license changed on Wednesday....:D:thumbsup:

This is great news for those forced to live in Ohio - and a great precedent for the rest of the country.

I am a bit disturbed by the idea that one must go through the whole rigamarole each time one renews one's license, but... It could certainly be much worse.

Some friends of mine were concerned that this article wasn't totally legit, so I checked up on it.

I saw the following article. It's my understanding this site is from the Youngstown, Ohio newspaper.

http://www.vindy.com/news/2009/sep/19/no-surgical-sex-change-no-problem-at-bmv-to-alter/?newswatch

One woman claims to have the actual form on her website:

http://ai.eecs.umich.edu/people/conway/TS/News/US/OhioBMVGenderChangeForm2009.pdf

I find it odd, though, that there is no mention of this on the BMV's website, no mention of it on the Department of Public Safety's website, no mention of it from any other newspaper, the form doesn't have a number, and the form can't be found on any other site except a transsexual professor in Michigan.

I emailed the author of the article and the professor who posted the form, but I'd like to hear from you on this topic.

Is it true? Were you actually interviewed for this article?

Thanks!

Good Morning -

You are correct, that article ran in the Youngstown Vindicator regarding a change the Ohio BMV recently made to the process for having a gender assignment changed on a driver license or identification card.

The form is not online because it's a process that we're handling directly from the BMV headquarters in Columbus. Customers can call the main customer service line at 614-752-7600 or e-mail the Registrar at [email protected] to request a form, which can be sent by fax, mail or e-mail.

Thanks,

Lindsay

Raquel,

I'm attaching a copy of the BMV form used to request a
gender assignment change on licenses/identification cards.

I, too, am surprised none of the other media have picked up
on this story yet. I think The Vindy and Dix Newspapers are
the only ones to have the story so far.

Hope it helps.

I just wanted to be the first Ohioan on the board to say I got the form filled out by My physician today and it's on its way to Columbus....:) He marked the gender change "permanent" on Mine because I am fully transitioned....This makes it a lot easier because I won't have to get a new letter every time I renew My license....I'm really excited and can't wait to get the letter to take to the DMV and change My license....change the license, change your life....literally....This will enable Me to live and work stealth because My license will no longer be in direct conflict with My appearance and who I am....and that has been a problem up until now...(well, it technically will be until I actually HAVE the new license)....Now, if Ohio would only allow the birth certificate to be changed, I will be the happiest man in the world....but, for now, I will certainly take having that big "M" on My license....:D

Colorado and California also allow DL change of gender with same proof. In fact Colorado requires your DL to match your presentation.

So has anybody specifically dealt with Arizona?

I live in Ohio, but I'm probably moving to Arizona in January. I was wondering if I should bother switching my Ohio license before I go. Like, will it make it easier to get an AZ one with an F, or will it be irrelevant?

edit - Well, looks like the rules in AZ are:

A signed statement from a licensed physician is required. The signed statement must:

- State that the customer is irrevocably committed to the gender-change process
- Include the physician's license number
- Cannot be dated more than three (3) months prior to the date of it's submission
- Note: It is not necessary for the customer to have completed the surgical gender-change procedure.

...so I suppose I should just wait to bother with it.

This is wonderful news, Trey!! And to all it affects!!

Hopefully this is one more step the states will take to help make gender correct for people. Changing birth certificates would be a good next step.

Maybe it would just be better if people, socially and legally, didn't make gender such a priority. It would get us, as people, a lot closer to gender equality, wouldn't it? Yes, I have a dream!!:D

I know how happy I am that Iowa made same-sex marriages legal!! When I'm filling out forms in person, they ask for my husband's name and I can proudly say, "My spouse's name is Karen Jameson!!" They never blink an eye either, lol!! Good training, I'm a thinking!:D

I saw this through the local group (thanks to Raquel), and I for one am very thrilled!!

I hope they don't change it before I go full time next year.

So happy for you Trey!!:)

In Massachusetts, it's very easy, all you need is a letter from your therapist for the DMV to change your Gender marker..
But it doesn't make any sense to do that until you legally change your name 1st..
