Another slant to the debate about classifying crossdressing as a mental illness.

This neat comparison between psychologists and psychiatrists comes from a friend of mine who works in healthcare. It was a general comment, but I reckon it fits :)

- a psychologist will tell you that you are who you are, and will try to help you be comfortable with your whole self

- a psychiatrist will tell you that you are ill

I know which one I would rather see.

Sometimes I think the Psychiatric profession would like to classify all human behavior as a mental illness. I guess so they can justify pumping us full of all kinds of drugs and call it curative.

I am totally happy with who I am, I am not sick, society is!

With this same logic a wheelchair bound individual must be sick because society looks at them too, not the same way but we still stare.

I love going out in fem, but hide most of the time due to pressure and fear brutality. I live in an intolerant area. Atlanta is very tolerant.

If psychiatry could prescribe a drug that would settle brain chemistry, or alter brain structure, to "cure" gender dysphoria, that would be one thing - but they can't. They may be able to numb feelings, but they'll never eliminate them.

I'm convinced that this is an inborn characteristic and not learned or "sick" behavior, it really is who we are.

Many young children discover this part of themselves by accident, and in so doing, begin to discover who they are. I know that I wasn't taught or encouraged to feel this, quite the opposite.

I don't know about "ill" but I can truthfully say that I'm "crazy" about crossdressing.

As in every profession, there are docs whoare very good at what they do and there are those... Well... They are not very good at what they do.

Not so much today, but in decades past, doctors were viewed as being almost omnipotent and having no faults. In today's world I don't think that is as true as it used to be.

If one does seek counseling for CDing or anything else that is of concern to the individual, perhaps the best thing to do is to seek advice on which docs seem to really understand the isses instead of knowing everything there is to know before they learn about about you.
