View Full Version : Anyone been "outed" by this site?

I ask because I have a gut feeling that it's only a matter of time 'til my mother or younger brother or sister are going to wonder by my laptop one of these days and see this site left up (accidentally of course) or open my favorites to see this site there. I'm curious: has this, or something similar, happened to anyone?

just make it a habbit to erase internet history every time you get up from the computer,,if you dont you will be found out

Use Firefox and set the preferences to erase everything after each session. Rename the bookmark and bury it in folders. Use CCleaner once a week using the 7 Pass option. This will keep you safe. Leaving your laptop open with this page still up will make any other and all precautions pointless.

It can happen, of course, but in the past I have been pretty careful to delete all cookies, history, etc. in order to avoid just what you're talking about. Now that my family knows, it's a relief not to have to do that.
You just have to be very careful.

Not just for this site but it automatically deletes passwords, cookies, etc. It solves many problems other than someone seeing where you have been. As far as a bookmark, this site is the first or second site that comes up in a google search if you do "crossdressers" in plural. You would not even have to keep it bookmarked.

Use Google Chrome and access run in 'Incognito' mode. It won't leave the usual traces of where you've been, among other things. You can also use a password protected screen saver that kicks in after several minutes of inactivity. At the very least, if you walk away, fall asleep, etc with the site up in the browser, there is less chance of someone else hopping on and seeing something you are not prepared to explain. Or you can come out about CDing altogether and not have to worry about such things... (but yeah I'm not ready for that either)

I am with those that use the browser's "safe" mode.

Google Chrome - Use Incognito mode as Melanie says.

Firefox - Have it auto delete as others have said or go to the Tools menu and select "Start Private Browsing" and you don't save any of the garbage.

IE - Under the safety menu, select "InPrivate Browsing". If you are using Windows 7, you can also get this from the task bar. Right click on the IE icon and you will see this option. Extra note, if you right click there and see "Crossdressers.com" you visited the site without being in InPrivate mode and need to clear your history.

All of these assume that you don't leave your laptop up with the webpage showing and with no auto-screen saver. If you do that, you are probably asking to be caught. :D

I have not been caught here yet.....and I do not plan to get caught by her. My son walked in once, while I was typing into a thread, but I minimized the screen real quick.

My wife found www.abgender.com on the computer years ago. (I inadvertantly left it as the last browser window and forgot to close it) She still brings up the "perverted" places I go on-line. I could imagine what she would say or do if she saw me here. It would not be pretty I'm sure

Computers are a dangerous thing if you are afraid of people finding out like I am.

I outed myself via email on accident when I was using my computer at home for some work stuff and somehow attached the wrong file - got a call "hey we got your file but....ah, it was not what we were expecting." The lady said "we needed a good laugh" It was gut wrenching, I thought I was going to die that day.

But as for my wife she has since been on this site and knows about the others I lurk on so at least with her I don't worry about it.

Yes, I have. And more often than not it's what happens when the person is so tired of hiding and the effort of it all that they 'accidentally' leave some sort of evidence. It's a way to make a choice with out taking the responsibility for the choice. Often with devestating results, I had one friend who did that and her whole world turned upside down in a second, and there was no going back from that. she learned a lot more about her wife than she ever wanted, and how vicious she could be when emotionaly hurt by my friends choice to just drop this on her. It was very nasty.

That being said, if you really are worried about your privacy? Then take ALL the steps necessary to protect it, and yourself. Remember, give yourself permission to be happy if this make's you happy. And just Breathe.

Heh, I don't think I'll go as far as wiping my history every time. They wouldn't really go poking around like that on my own laptop. I just have a feeling that my absentmindness will lead to having the browser open some time. And honestly, I'm not that dedicated to keeping the secret; if they find out like that, they find out like that.

You seem surprised, Kelly. Practice at one thing can be applied to another.

Well, no and yes. Not directly from this site, but with the confidence and information I've gained here, it's been noted that I know way too much for a guy, and the past 3 Halloweens I've just had too much fun.

Slowly giving away my ( shsss ) secret , almost to the point of I just don't care who knows what anymore.

Oooooooooh yeah, have I ever been outed by this site!

As this tale (http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117371) can attest, letting our guard down can have short-term catastrophic effects. My son found out about Kathi, and it was kinda weird for awhile.

For you Safari users, it has a great mode called Private Browsing, which doesn't keep track of sites you have browsed to. It works great, as long as you turn the bloody thing on!!

I sometimes wish the owners would put this particular section or forum (M to F crossdressing) in the secure section. Google reads everything here and sometimes I've been too open and casual revealing stuff about myself that could help someone bust me.

Some here know that I go out, neighbors see me and all that. But I'm am still in the closet so to speak with work and some family. In a huge city you can hide in plain sight, but still have to be a bit careful.

If I were smart I'd just get off the net completely...but it entertains me and sometimes it fun to be a drama queen and attention ***** on various forums and picture sites. LOL

It works! Between setting firefox to erase all internet history when you close it, and ccleaner, you should be fine. (www.ccleaner.com)

If you're walking away for a sec, you can lock the screen by pressing the "windows key" + "L" keys together. (Set a user password)

I've moved in with my father for a while and he's a nosy butt, i just sit so he can't walk behind me and if I have to leave my laptop I lock the screen.

Luckily I was out to my wife when she discovered this site and I fell asleep on the couch with my laptop on and on this site. She saw it when she came down to find out why I had not gone to bed yet.

I wasn't wearing my Moms new dress, but does a pair of leopard skin fuzzy slippers count?

I originally was outted by her finding a copy of Ms. Veras Crossdress for Sucess in my computer bag. That is not the first book you want your spouse to read on the topic of crossdressing or transgenderism!

It wasn't this site that got me at work, it was my PDA, before I learned the little close button at the top doesn't really close things. Luckily it didn't phase the two of my coworkers who saw it. The kids who live with me and my wife know as do my parents so the only people I would have to worry about outing myself to on this site would also have to explain what they were doing here in the first place! :D

In Safari you can use the Private Browsing feature (Safari > Private Browsing) which doesn't save history or searches etc.....use it religiously. My wife doesn't care but it is just in case someone else (relative/friend) comes by the house and is poking around.

I agree with the others that mentioned Firefox. In the latest version (version 3.5.6 is what I use) there is a feature called "Private Browsing" when you switch to this mode the browser does not record any website history or cookies. No one will ever know even if you share your computer! :)

It wasn't this site that got me at work, it was my PDA, before I learned the little close button at the top doesn't really close things...

I had a very similar experience with my iPhone at work. I browse the net on it to keep myself amused while at work. I had left it on one desk while sitting at another and some one picked it up and opened the screen. I saw her and the guy sitting next to her glance at the phone and then glance at me strange. I had forgotten I had left this site open, the giant "Crossdresser Chat" advertisement was almost filling the screen.

Luckily the description blurb under the logo of this site comes out too small to read on the iPhone, so the whole thing looked like a banner ad. She asked me about it in a louder than normal voice. I acted my way out of it as if it was your run of the mill spam ad etc and nothing has been mentioned since.

I feel bad doing that, but I'm am not prepared to be open about my dressing (to people at work especially) for a myriad of reasons. I could care less about any gossip that goes on behind my back (the place is rife with it but that can't be helped). I can easily complain about privacy and no excuse about me not being on this site in the first place is irrelevant considering it's a personal phone.

Im using the latest version of Internet Explorer. In the upper right hand corner there is a tab "Safety" Click on it you will get a drop down menu, Click on in private browsing. You will get a new window labeled InPrivate. Once you 'x' the window all browsing history is cleared from the Inprivate window.

Sure my kids have come into the room when I was cruiseing this forum. I am sure that over time they have seen the site. Nothing is said. I don't try all that hard to hide it anymore. This is who I am.

If someone were to ask why I am on the site, I will tell them, Because I am a crossdresser and I have a bunch of great friends on here.

I simply set up two user accounts on my computer with the screen saver set to automatically log off. You only need a simple two or three character password. If anyone needs to use it I log them in on the plain account. Not much to see there. If someone questions I tell them I leave my PC on 24/7 and I have my financial info on it. I don't like deleting cookies and history because when I go back I don't remember where I left off.

Talking to my computer guru the other day while he was setting up my new computer at work about the interesting things that he must see on other peoples computers. He told me about a couple of females computers that he had found nude photos of them on and then slyly winked and said that I should lose my gut if I wanted to look good in a mini skirt. Needless to say that he has worked on my home computer also. OOPS.

I'm pretty sure my neighbor noticed what was up on my screen. The heading for this page spells it out pretty clearly. I had just logged in when he came in and I forgot what was up on the screen.
It's probably not the only hint of what lies below the surface with me since I'm sure he has noticed a feminine scent on me before.

Talking to my computer guru the other day [...] and then slyly winked and said that I should lose my gut if I wanted to look good in a mini skirt.

When I did that kind of work for the government (in Canada), the official policy, backed by "reasonable interpretations" of the several relevant laws, was that if I saw anything on someone's computer that did not in itself violate policy, that I was to keep my mouth shut about it, not even telling my direct co-workers who did similar work, and that I was not to bring it to official attention.

In the case of nude self-photos (which I never encountered on the work computers), the limits were that I was authorized to remind the user that if anyone else saw the pictures, that the other person might be uncomfortable and that could constitute a "hostile workplace environment".

In the case of anything that might be interpreted as "pornography" on the work computers, as well as the "hostile work environment" factor, I would have been required to take action, as pornography is specifically against our policy (nudity in itself is not against our policy: some of our employees study medical images.) However, I did have the discretion of speaking to the person and saying "You need to delete those pictures now or else I will have no choice but to pass this matter up for official investigation." My job wasn't to be a PITA snitch or to get people in trouble: my job was to stop the problem.

In my time on that job, I only had to take Official Action 3 times: everyone else reacted well to a "private word". The three cases where I had to pass matters up through the official channels, I am not permitted to speak about (unless specifically asked about them in court.)

In the USA, there were specific don't-report laws for systems administrators of public email systems who happened to see something in the course of their work, with the exception of imminent danger to life, or material that has to be acted on in order to protect the integrity of the systems. Those laws have been considerably weakened by the provisions of the Homeland Security Act... or so we are told, since we are not permitted to actually read portions of the Act or consequent regulations, for reasons of "National Security".

I have thought about this very same thing, trying to convince myself that if an individual were to make that connection, either through here or my flickr page, well why are they browsing cd stuff to begin with? I would hope they would feel something in common with me, or be too shy to mention it, I do not want to accept that someone who actually knows me would have malicious intentions.....naive maybe...in todays world especially....

My wife knows about me so I only bother clearing my history when we are expecting friends round. In fact, as this is by far my most visited website, it comes up first if you double click the address bar on firefox. I did accidentally leave the site up when a friend walked in many years ago but I told him it was just a pop up from a porn site. Amusingly he accepted this answer and didn't pursue it further. X

One of the safest ways I've found is to download an ISO of PuppyLinux, burn it to CD, and then boot your computer from the CD. PuppyLinux has a very friendly interface and the image loads completely in memory (which also means it's very fast), and you can use the browser from there. When you're done, eject the CD and power off the computer. It won't damage anything (because the local hard drive is not used) and it won't save anything anywhere - RAM wipes when you power down. It is possible to save things running Puppy but you specifically have to tell it to do that, by default nothing is saved.

That way you don't ever have to worry about forgetting to run CCleaner or delete your browser history or anything, you can just hit the power button and viola - everything is gone.

That's what I'd do, if my family didn't know (but they do), though I'd probably use a Knoppix Live CD/DVD rather than Puppy, though most folks aren't geeky enough to want to do that. Otherwise, a good password protected account with strong password and with the screensaver set up to kick in fast and require a password will do the trick for most folks.
