I had an interesting thought today while walking around wasting time waiting to start the work day.
I had recently watched the classic Disney film Hook with Robin Williams, and thought about Captain Hook.
I think this might be the second movie in which Dustin Hoffman gets in touch with his girl side. I mean wearing a huge wig of curls, more lace than grandmas bed spread, earrings, tights, heels with huge bows. I mean come on I smell queen! Oh not to mention the eye shadow. Oh and I believe he is wearing what is now considered a blouse. (Might have had a bow in his hair as well, I'm not sure)
Yup I think Captain Hook was a bit of a half in half out CD'er. And really what is manlier than a pirate!! At least that may be my next train of thought for getting the girl friend to see a different side of this.

Hmmmmmm, interesting idea. Were any real pirates such flamboyant dressers?
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/sandylewiscares/William_Dampier.jpg
William Dampier was probably a fairly well-dressed pirate (O.K., strictly speaking, he was a "buccaneer") who also happened to be the first person to circumnavigate the Earth three times and the first Englishman to explore and describe Australia, as well as New Guinea.
He wrote several books including (available free online).
There are several bios of him including Diana and Michael Preston's A Pirate of Exquisite Mind.
Then there were the women, some of whom crossdressed FtoM. Most famous of the women pirates was Anne Bonney, quickly followed by her colleague, Mary Read. Anne met Mary when both were serving under "Calico Jack" Rackham. It is said that Anne found Jack's lieutenant interesting and the lieutenant turned out to be the crossdressing Mary Read.
So yes, we do have quite a history with pirates. What the heck, go for it! (do ply her with rum first, Matey).

Lady at doorway to young trick-or-treater dressed as a pirate, "Oh my, what a nice costume, but where are your buccaneers?"
Young pirate, "Right on my buccan head lady, where do you think?"
Sorry, couldn't resist.
FWIW, ribbons, lace, bows, feathers, bright colors, silver buckles on footwear and so on were the masculine mode of dress back then as well as a way of displaying rank and status and didn't have anything to do with crossdressing, not to say there weren't any CDs back then, of course. My guess is if you even implied to one of them that he liked to dress like a girl would get you his rapier right through your best liver.
But you're right, Dustin did look pretty swish as Hook.

You have to remember that in olden days on those one gender pirate ships someone had to assume the opposite roles....................:2c:

Men by Martin Mull
Umm, Captain Klumpz....
Yes, Malarkey?
The men haven't eaten in days, sir.
Yes Malarkey.
Captain, I don't think you fully understand. I said the men have not eaten in days now.
I heard you, Malarkey, thank you.
Captain, you've gone quite mad. I'm telling you for the last time, the men have not eaten in days!
Well, force them! You've plenty of men, haven't you?
Plenty, sir.
Plenty of what, sir?
Men, sir!
What?!
Men!
What?!
Men! Men! MEN! Men!
Men, Men, Men, Men
Men, Men, Men, Men
Men, Men, Men, Men
Men, Men, Men, Men
It's great to be on a ship with men and sail across the sea-o,
We don't know where we'll land or when, but it's great to be with men
It's great to be with men
'Cause men can sweat and men can stink and no one seems to care-o,
We'll throw the dishes in the sink and clog the drain with hair-o,
(Clog the drain with hair-o)
Men, men, men.
It's a ship all filled with men.
So batten down the ladies room; there's no one here but men
Men, Men, Men, Men
Men, Men, Men, Men
There's men above, there's men below, there's men down in the galley,
There's Butch and Spike And Buzz and Biff
And one guy we call Sally
(And one guy we call Sally)
Men, men, men.
It's a ship all filled with men.
You'll never have to lift the seat; there's no one here but men
Men, Men, Men, Men
Men, Men, Men, Men
We're men and friends until the end and none of us are sissies,
At night we sleep in separate beds and blow each other kissies
(And blow each other kissies)
Men, men, men.
It's a ship all filled with men.
So throw your rubbers overboard; there's no one here but men
Ahhhhhhhhh, Mennnnn.

No comment on the way you may have intended that, Sandy, but you are quite right! Back in the days when Britainia ruled the waves there wasn't always much to do onboard ship, particularly in the evenings.
So the British (and other) navies supplied their ships with scripts and costumes and the men used to put on plays for the the Captain and officers.
When the Endurance was trapped in the Antarctic ice for ten months, Shackleton kept the men from going insane by performing plays. Of course, some of the men had to play the parts of women.

Hoy chihuahua, I miss Captlex. We used to have some great Pirate adventures and parties here. I was the Rum wench of course as well as a sword wielding cutthroat.:battingeyelashes::)

Denise's post made me think about the fact that there are bunches of pirate crew reenactors out there and, if you wanted, you could join one. They probably wouldn't care if you chose to be a wench.
As a starting place for some info, click here (http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/groups.htm).
Which made me think about the dozens of other reenactor groups that there are, from the middle ages through the civil war (which I was raised to call "the late unpleasantness" as "there was nothing civil about it") to the wild west.
You can pick your time period and join a group.
Hmmmmm, I think I'm gonna go check out the wild west stuff. Corsets and guns, what a perfect combination for a lady!

When I read the title "Crossdressing pirates" I was hoping it was an Arrested Development reference... alas...
Lindsey - "I think that's my blouse!"
Mom - "It looks better on him."
