Any tips on voice?

I'm so bummed out!!!

Been working on my female voice for some time now, using Andrea James' video. I thought I was making good progress. Enough to muster the nerve to place a few calls to some stores, in order to check passability.

Guess what? I totally struck out!!! Got sir'ed all 3 times, SOOO embarrassing!

I did tape myself, so that I could later examine what I was doing right/wrong. Well, pitch and resonance seem to be OK. What's killing me is the female intonation-inflexion-enunciation deal. I just can't seem to work out that singsonginess GGs have in their voices.

What do you do to sound female, and I know it doesn't have to do with pitch alone. Anybody has specific tips to share? Resources?

I don't have it yet either, but I try pacticing when I'm driving, I practice speaking in a sing-song voice

if you saw me you would never know the voice matched.i can do fem voice so good now that i go to movies and order tickets popcorn and so on.never a second glance.now i havent been out fully dressed as a girl in over three years now.but speaking on the phone is a hoot.they never know.just go a couple octives higher and speak in a softer wispery tone.it really works for me.now my singing voice is a tenor,i dont know if that helps what is your singing voice?

Practice, practice, practice! Also, it's actually easier to pass with your voice in person than on the phone, assuming you have your look down: people hear what they want to hear, and if a woman opens her mouth they expect a woman to be talking to them, whereas on the phone it's a 50-50 shot if they're in doubt.

Listen to women speak on the radio, and copy their intonation, note-for-note. That's the hardest thing to get, imo. It's really like singing compared to the way males use their voices.

When I'm alone in the car, I "sing along" with women all the time.

As a Contrabass I too struggle with this, but have found some ways around it.


1.Online you can get voice disguisers for your mic that lower or heighten your pitch.

2.My en femme is a mute.

First it's stopping the bass part of your voice from vibrating and letting the rest do its thing. Secondly it's the inflection changes without that part of the voice that we use all the time (so practice is the thing) but the the word usage is usually different. That takes time and I'm not there yet :)

ANother idea is to take vocal lessons and learn how to actually hit higher pitches, itll also help you sound more sing songy.

I agree with Windy's comment here. Passing on voice alone on the phone is the hardest IMHO. I think that even if my voice is "off" a little I stand a better chance of having the voice part of my presentation be more accepted as a woman's if they can see me (always assuming my visual presentation is "close enough" for people to not be "that sure" that I'm a guy). :D

Anyway, I'm afraid I don't have any answers for you other than listen to every GG you meet and try to copy them. That's what I try to do.

Yes, I do this also. I'm getting close too. Takes a lot of work. But listen to them, and try to copy the up and down of their voice as they speak. Notice how they say certain words, etc.

Breath wih your diaphram, just like theatre teachs you. With it you can cast your voice further or change it because your expanding the lungs properly and relaxing the throut better which allows you to better remove the bass and control the pitch and such

A lot of the time I actually try to make my voice lower. Nothing beats wearing a kimono and talking like a sailor.

I was a theater major in college and studied a lot of speech and diction.
The best way for a male to sound like a female is to soften your tone.
Don't de so loud, guys tend to be loud and proud, as we say, just soften the tone and lighten the delivery.
A womans voice is lighter then a mans, by that I mean, she speaks more fro the throat then the lower torse.
It doesn't mean you raise your voice in pitch, just lighten the way you delivery words.
It is hard to describe, but trying to soften and lighten is the correct way to create a female voice.
A good, but performed analogue, would be Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie.
He lighten the voice, which did raise the pitch, he also added a dialect, which is totally unnecessary, which is why I say it is performed.
Watch the movie and pattern the tone and delivery to his, you should be able to construct a strong female voice pattern.
