I have a question here

Irene,
If someone wants to take my picture and pass that off as them, then I consider that kind of sad rather than intrusive. I hope that one day they feel good enough about themselves that they can post their own picture. If they use my picture as a kind of "training wheels" so be it. That means I have helped somebody. Yes, I am that odd. :)

Watermarking is effective but only if it is done right. Otherwise, it is very easy to photoshop the watermark away. Unfortunately, having text splayed across your image kinda ruins the effect.

I watermark documents but I don't want to damage the pic with one. The watermark takes away from the quality of the pic.

It's really tough...I had to go through all kinds of "runarounds" with MySpace to prove I was ME just because someone had stolen one of my pictures and was passing it off as themselves on their profile....I mean...I gave the people at MySpace my home page URL...the URL to the pic in question...and the fact that there are over 600+ pictures on said home page with MY face on them...They said that "Wasn't good enough of an identiication"......It took nearly three months before it FINALLY was resolved...I was thankful for the person who knew me and had seen the stolen pic and let me know about it...I'm just wondering how many out there I don't know about.. By the Same token...I was made aware by a friend who had seen a stolen pic of mine on URNA used by someone else..I had send an email to the administrators...and give Jon and Vicki credit...the profile was pulled within the hour...THAT'S how it's done.. Thanks to the both of them.....But I guess, no matter what...As long as we post pictures of ourselves on the web...they always stand a chance of being hijacked and misused by people saying it's themselves..."Flattery"??? I think not...More sad, I think...I for one have put a LOT of work into being Kendra and her looks...:2c:

How to apply, what type to apply, and how effective watermarking will be, is going to depend on what your concerns are. What are you afraid of people doing with your photos? Posing as you on a social network? Using your pic on peopleofwalmart.com? Using it for some commercial purpose? Something else entirely? In general I think it is pretty well established that DRM is all but pointless.

I do not protect my pictures and have had some of them taken and used as their own on typical social sites. It really is sad that someone had to use someone else's picture when they are trying to pass themselves off. I worked at getting it fixed for about a month and then just let it go.
Why would you try to protect your pictures if you are posting them here and elsewhere anyway? My pictures have been on the net for almost 12 years.

You know, in my opinion, if your that concerned about it, you shouldn't be posting them.

I have nothing to worry about .....
Since my best defense from Anyone stealing my pictures, is to just keep taking pictures of myself...:D
It has worked really great for me so far....lol

The watermark is only effective if someone steals your shot and uses it for profit. Then the watermark can be used in court. Otherwise anything you put out there can be up for grabs.

Kimberly is absolutely correct - if you don't want anyone taking or using your stuff, don't post it for the world to use.

Ya know I never really thought about it , I don't care if someone uses my pic as themselfs that as it has been said is just sad. I'm now just wondering how you could find out if you pics ARE Beening used not by you. Face recainstion softwear (Can't spell it) might be able to find all your pics floating around out there but I HHS no idea how to find it or use it. One of out Teck girls here who has this stuff you try to use it to see if it could work.
I am now wondering how many of my pics are out there in bondage , working for some strange person aganst there will. Lol. It would be neat to know and bust them. But like I sId I don't care if they are using my pic. Now if there makeing money off me then I want my cut other than that. I sure DON'T want to know if my pic is used to scare people. Ugh.
to me it's not a big deal. i feel sad for the person who takes them. if you are not sure then don't post them ...

I agree the only safe way in todays electronic world with programs like Photoshop, etc. is to not post them.
It's sad that people are so pathetic that they will use other peoples photos and try to pass themselves off as them.
Yes I have seen it even here in one case I can think of.

In theory copyright laws protect images from being used without prior consent but in practice these laws are impossible to enforce. You can't be everywhere on the internet and you have to know about abuse in order to stop it. Watermarks have to be visible in order to deter abuse and they will either be the kind that can easily be photoshopped away or the kind that covers the main motive of the image and thus ruins it.
I imagine the only effective kind of watermarking would be wearing something with your name on but this solution provides a host of practical problems.
I think one has to accept that people will copy your work off the internet. When I publish graphics on the net (completely unrelated to CD'ing by the way) I almost always publish them under a Creative Commons license in recognition of the fact that people will copy and use your artwork if they like it, no matter what you do.
Instead of seeing someone copying your images as an infringement on your rights it would be better to see it as an homage to your beauty;)

If someone is particularly good looking, then having their photos ripped off might be a concern but if not, I mean no one steals less than excellent photos.
Like mine, I look like crap, no one is going to want to pose as me.

And everyone else who concurred with this... me too.
I really don't have a problem... we are living in an age where this is going to move into a different space. We are in transition with so many things technologically and learning (and thence adapting) very quickly. We have no idea where this line of reasoning is going.
We can try and control things, and some people are, but the world in 20 years time will be very different from now. Just think about the past 5 years... we are a great community and I love it, but it is built on anonymity... and in a world of anonymity, we need images to portray who we think we are and want to project.
Where do we get them from? Real people or other?
By the way... my avvie is me... just for the record!
Lots of make-up and hair!
