Hey gals,
I haven’t logged on officially for a while even though I check up on you all from afar several times a week. Tonight is the first time in months that Anna has been able to see her reflection in the mirror. Hard to admit sometimes how much I miss this side of me.

Anyway, I’m sitting here trying to type with my relatively short French nails and just amazed at how hard it is. I have a huge admiration for the ladies in the typing pool back in the 60’s before the electrics. Imagine pounding the old manual machines with long nails trying to get through the paper and a couple carbons. For you younger gals that’s how copies used to be made!

While thinking of old times I wanted to share something I’ve been mulling over. A few months ago I had the chance to spend the weekend with my 85 year old aunt. She never married, and worked most of her life as a department store buyer. We were reminiscing about some family stuff and she told me to follow her into the bedroom.

She opened up the dresser to find some photos and I couldn’t help but notice her lingerie. There were some pretty provocative bras and matching girdles. I mentioned how beautiful the fabric was and she pulled them out. These hadn’t been out of her drawer for likely 40 to 50 years. The colors and patterns were wild, and the look would have been very sexy with some back-seam hose. I also noticed that the girdles were unbelievably heavy and stiff. The fabric was like canvas plied with thick rubber. Of course after that many years it had grown brittle and would have undoubtedly split with any stretching (no, I didn’t even consider it. She was 90 pounds soaking wet back then and it probably wouldn’t even go over a single thigh!)

There were also sections in her drawer with stockings. I had never seen pale yellow and blue, and she said they were real silk. Trying to be unobtrusive, I managed to pull out a couple slips and let them slide over my fingers. The satin was like mercury, cool and sensual to the touch as it flowed along my hands. What a wonderful feeling she must have experienced as a young women with all that underneath her dresses.

She later asked if there was anything I wanted of hers when the time comes. A dozen thoughts went through my head in several seconds, but none I could share with her. She would understand, but the rest of the family would have no clue!

Hugs to all!

If only there was some way to inherit the items when the time came. I think you can sometimes find items like this on ebay but at what price. I was doing some work for an old man once, his wife had just died and he was having a clear out. They were very rich. Laid on the bed there was a lovely 1900s long boned evening dress in my size. Probably went to the charity shop!

I love the lingerie from the the 40's thru about 1963. This time period had classic women's clothing. The lingerie was truly classic-I agree with you.

Brings back nice memories of my childhood "porn" ... I'd drool when the latest catalog showed up in the mail. As soon as I could sneak a look, I'd turn right to the lingerie section, completely bypassing the Red Ryder BB guns.

Ah so very true.

I'd been separated from my mother until I was 7 yrs old. I still remember her pulling up her skirt to adjust her garters. Liz Taylor, in the first scenes of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" from 1959 with Paul Newman and Burl Ives, does the same thing in a form fitting white slip.

I've never been the same since!

What a sweet and thought inspiring thread. It would be nice for you to have those things even if not to wear, as they make nice heirlooms to a wonderful time in history. mj

Ah yes, the classic lingerie that women were "forced" to wear in the 40's and 50's. One of my favorite pieces I have acquired is a 1950's era full body OBG with garters which half zips and half hook and eye closes on the side. The cups are "bullet" style and OMG, that girdle just gives me a classic hourglass figure. I do love the vintage lingerie from that era.

Guess that is why my mom types so hard at the computer. As for long nails today, you can easily get used to them. I used to file mine down when it got difficult to type. As I got better, that is no longer a good indicator. They can get quite long before I have trouble typing with them. Now, I just have to make an effort to consider when enough is enough and file them anyway.

Gosh, if she'd understand, then I'd come clean with her and tell her that I'd love to have her things, but that it would be awkward to explain to other family members afterwards, and that perhaps someday when she feels the time is right, she could give you some of her lingerie.

I'd imagine that even some of the items that wouldn't fit you or are too fragile to wear even if they'd fit you, would be special to have just as a rememberance of her.

"Dear Auntie, I'm a crossdresser and I'd just love to give your lovely things a good home."

Possibilities include...

1. Scoring a huge load of slinky lingerie; or
2. Doing first aid for a heart attack.

Lets not forget the vintage night wear. There is nothing like sleeping in an Olga gown with a 150+ inch sweep. Or any quality vintage gowns with that kind of hem would be fine I just wish I could find more at the thrift stores since on ebay they are usually over $100.

The peignoirs from the 60-70s are my weak spot. I used to have about 50 floor length sets with double and triple sheer layers and oodles of ruffles and lace. Sadly some were worn out and I (foolishly) purged others.

To me, there is nothing more ultra feminine than a massive sheer cloud of nylon chiffon flowing softly as a woman walks by, or sets down on a couch unless of course it is ME wearing it.

I used to buy these outfits all the time from a really sweet woman in Pasadena, California. She ran a tall styles shop and would always call me and several other CD regulars when she went to the fashion mart and bought a new stock of these gown sets. She told me her best all round customers were the CDers and she adored us.

Today I have seen the exact same gowns I owned on sale in vintage shops for hundreds of dollars when I boughtthem for 60-90.00.

I have found a couple seamstresses who specialize in recreating thse for those of you who crave the soft elegance of the peignoirs.

Yes, I remember the feel of classic lingerie well even today. The feel of hose sliding up your smooth legs. Fastening the tops to your garter. The fall of your full slip as it slid over your bra and ever so slightly brushed your skin as if fell. The feel of a rayon blouse as you tucked it into your skirt. Sliding into the seat of a car and spinning your legs in. Raising up to untwist your skirt and slip as they slide around your hips while pulling up your skirt above your knees so you have room to use the pedals. Thus giving the obligatory few inches of beautiful lace at the him which truckers adored. The feel of air through the vents as it blew up your legs on a beautiful spring day. Young people of today no not what they have missed.

I still own several of the slips including some real silk ones.

Amazing, I found a beautifiul vintage beige satin night gown in a thrift store. I snatched it of the rack so fast no one saw me do it ! The tag said Medium and I thought "just right". When I got home I found that M in those days was quite small. It is very long and has incredable lace. I still have it and take it out to look at it and wish. So, be sure to look closely in thrift stores, you don't know what you might find.

If your aunt worked as a clothes buyer, she was completely into it.I would tell her you CD and you were amazed at all the great things in her dressers from the past..and you enjoy studying woman's undergarments ...vintage is so interesting...And that you would love to have all that stuff...even though you know it would never fit and is dry rotted to boot...Just tell her! What can she really say? I suspect that she will tell you of CD's that she has known and will surprise you. And,you can always keep some of it and MAKE A KILLING ON E BAY WITH THE REST! Go for it!!:D

Fashion Trends are ever changing and often styles come back around,I can often be found daydreaming of dressing like Doris Day or Audrey Hepburn. So we can only hope the femininity of the 50s and to some extent the 60s come back around, wouldn't we be in heaven. It sometimes seems to me that only us girls wear skirts these days.Oh! well back to the daydreaming:daydreaming:

My favorite is Tosca of California. They even had some larger sizes. I still have a really nice white one; I know what you mean about being in a cloud of sheer nylon chiffon!

Slip into your local Salvation Army thrift store.....there, you will likely find lovely full slips from places that have "cleaned out" the closet and drwers of an older lady who has passed away. If that's too gruesome for anyone, sorry...but...i've found some awesome full slips and panties from those "clean outs"!!!!

I totally agree. In my younger days of being a CD I wore that kind of lingerie! of course, being a larger size now I have had to get newer stuff. But that stuff really was classic!!

I routinely wear short full slips in “boy mode” as they are the same length as men’s extra tall cotton A-shirts but are much easier to tuck-in. My favorites are plus-size tank top body slips that are sized at the waist so they are not too tight at the top or bottom, and don’t have a C-cup bodice that is way too big to hide when underdressing. An even better solution to exposing a bare back and the tops of panties and pantyhose would be a slip with a crotch closure. I think they were popular with “Rosie the Riveteer” in WWII, but they seem to have disappeared. Any source suggestions?
