View Full Version : If I can't "Fly Pretty" I'll just have to "Fly as Pretty as I Can"

There I was - Friday afternoon at 4:00. A call comes in, "Hey, can you fly to Philadelphia for a customer install?" "Sure" I say. "When?" "Ummmmm, Monday" was the response. Yipes!
So, after a whirlwind time of booking everything online, I was off to Philly!
Kimberly has inspired many of us to Fly Pretty (Phrase copyrighted 2009 © by KimberlyTX), and I wanted to join that Mile High Club. Unfortunately, until my move is finished, all of my girl stuff is packed away (Yes, I know, Veronica. You told me to pack an "emergency bag" Leave it to a guy not to listen :)). So, what to do? Well duh! Shop!
Although I wanted to go full out, I didn't exactly want to buy a new wig, forms, clothes, shoes, makeup and more. So, in the words of Persephone, I went "Full Androgyny." I still had a pair of Talbot's khakis and a crisp white cotton ladies fitted Oxford shirt in my closet. I had to go with boy shoes, unfortunately. Pity, I had a pair of flats that would've looked totally cute with this outfit! I also wore my large ladies bangle watch and my engagement/wedding ring set to round it off. Sure, I could've left it at that, but then again, I'm me, and therefore not that bright. I thought I needed a little something more. Oh yeah! Makeup!
I had gone to Ulta a few days before and purchased a great makeup kit from Bare Escentuals. It had about 30 shadow choices, 20 lip colors, blush, powder, bronzer and more, all for $17.50. Of course, they slipped me a friends and family 40% discount, so I paid peanuts for some great makeup. The manager said this was a great kit to experiment with. She knows that I like to blend, and is always (mostly gently) encouraging me to branch out. She asked if I had time to "play" that day, and she would show me some fun looks with colors from the kit. Unfortunately, I was on a lunch break. Pity. She sketched a few examples of eyeshadow designs from a sampler kit they had. I can't wait to try them!
Anyway, this afternoon I dressed up, shaved, and started on my makeup. I was going for "natural, but noticeable" - neutral shadows trending towards pinks and browns, light blush, eyeliner, brow color and light mascara. Instead of foundation, I used the powder only. It didn't look too bad.
I threw my stuff in the car (and went back when I remembered I left the makeup kit out on the bathroom counter) and went to the bank to make a deposit. My favorite two tellers were there and we discussed my upcoming trip and why I was dressed up. One asked why I didn't dress up all the way. I asked if the makeup was that obvious. She said, "Well, to a woman, yeah. Instantly!" She turned to a male teller and said, "Did you know he was wearing makeup?" He looked at me and said, "Makeup? Is he?" She turned to me and said, "See? Guys are so clueless!" I raised my eyebrows at her and she said, "Oh, don't worry, you're not one of them. You're one of us." :)
I left the bank and made a quick stop at Ulta for more lip gloss. I asked a few of the girls there what they thought of my makeup and told them the look I was going for. They said I did a great job, that I looked like a guy - but prettier. Then I was off to the airport.
At the airport, for the most part, people gave me a wide berth. They would notice the makeup, the ring, the watch, smile and look the other way. I didn't have a problem with that. I did find a simple solution, however. If you ever want to gather a crowd of people around you no matter what you look like, do what I did - haul out an iPad. I was instantly surrounded by people young and old that wanted to see it, to touch it. Suddenly, they didn't care that I was wearing makeup and women's clothes. It was a great icebreaker.
One older lady (forgive me, to me that means about mid-60's) and I got into a discussion about how she could use it for e-mail and the like. She took my hand and said she loved my ring and asked if there was a story behind it. I said, "Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?" and showed her my favorite Kathi picture. She asked if it was my wife. I told her that it was me. She squinted and said, "Wow, it really is you. You make a very beautiful woman!" I thanked her, told her that I did it for fun, etc. She thought it was wonderful that I could be so open about it. I thought, "Heck, you should see a friend of mine called Kimberly!" :)
She showed the iPad with my picture to her husband. For some odd reason, he wasn't nearly as impressed with it as she was. The flight was long and uneventful, except I saw Blindside for the first time, and couldn't stop crying! :)
I picked up my rental car and drove to my hotel, making sure to touch up my gloss at each location. Now, I'm typing this short (well, it's quick for one of my posts, anyway!) post, getting about five hours of sleep so I can meet the customer at 7:00 in the morning. Yay me! Then I fly home tomorrow afternoon. I won't be pretty, since all my makeup is home, but at least I did it a bit. Kimberly, I can see the attraction to Flying Pretty. I can't wait until I can "take off the training wheels" and do it for real. Someday.

Anyway, congrats on your bonne voyage! Or should that be your Maiden voyage?

So I'm reading this entire post, paying attention to all the details but this is the one that jumps out at me. Kathi, you're such a techie!!! Did your new toy come in pink? :)
Seriously, you should have listened to Veronica, she's a very smart woman. But talk about making the best of what you had at hand. Very brave trip I must say, and such a fun read as always!

Miranda,
Yes, geekiness does rule! It's a simple principle that has guided my life thus far.
Well, here I am in the Philly airport gate area. The install was a success and I'm on my way home. It took me quite awhile to get through security - not due to anything I did, but because of iPad! :). Apparently, it's the first one they had seen, and everyone wanted a turn with it. They're TSA, so who am I to argue. :)
Since I'm still wearing my company shirt, and just came from a customer, I'm obviously not dressed up. Well, I am wearing my ladies wedding set - just to show them! A few people at the gate have asked me questions (about the iPad - not why I'm wearing a ladies wedding ring), and wanted to touch it (again, not the ring, the iPad :)).
So, overall, it's been a nice trip! As I said before, I can't wait to Fly Pretty for real.

I agree with Leslie - that was one hell of a compliment!
You don't need to be comparing yourself to me because you just shot way past me. I don't have the courage to do what you just did. When I fly, I may as well be in disguise - no one I know is gong to recognize me if they see Kimberly. On the other hand, YOU went to the airport being proud and comfortable with who and what you are, and yet were still clearly identifiable should anyone you know cross paths with you. THAT took far more courage than anything I've ever done.
The bad news for you is that traveling that way is going to be VERY addictive for you. It takes what used to be long and boring days in airports and makes them a lot more interesting and fun. If you are going to fly often, you will get to the point where it will irritate you when you can't fly pretty.
Oh, and for the record, I agree with your lady friends - you DO make a good looking woman!

But you do have some excellent "so what" skills. I see you flying totally pretty soon (an easy task for you I might add).Sometimes I think my "So What" skills may be my downfall someday. I slip my ladies wedding set on in the parking lot after I drop my kids off at their school. I touch up my lip gloss in the mirror at streetlights - all while in guy mode. It's like a part of me wants to get caught so I can do it when and how I want. Consequences? What're those? :)
When I fly, I may as well be in disguise - no one I know is gong to recognize me if they see Kimberly. On the other hand, YOU went to the airport being proud and comfortable with who and what you are, and yet were still clearly identifiable should anyone you know cross paths with you. THAT took far more courage than anything I've ever doneHmmm, like most things in life, I hadn't thought of that. No one I knew was flying that day (at least I didn't think so), so I thought, "Heck, an airport full of strangers? What's the big deal?" Was it obvious I was wearing makeup? From the looks I got waiting in the TSA line to people on the plane. Definitely. I wonder what they thought of me?
Like you said though, it does seem addictive! I can't wait to do it again - maybe raising the bar a bit. I was often thinking, "Hmmmm, how would people react if I were fully dressed." Can't wait to see.
I did notice plenty of reactions even with just my wedding set. I had my laptop case slung over my shoulder and had my coat in the crook of my arm, with my hand clearly visible. My rings, being right out there, really got a lot of second glances. It's funny how guys would glance away, but women would meet my eyes and smile more than not.
I did have a few experiences waiting at the Detroit gate (Your favorite place, right?). Having time for a meal, I went to Popeye's and they noticed and commented on my ring right off. After eating, I went to the gate to wait. There was one available seat next to a twentysomething girl. I asked her if it was taken and she told me to please sit down. She seemed nice and we started chatting. Photography (I showed her how nice pictures look on the iPad), school, life, relationships and more. She asked how long I had been married. I told her over twenty years. She said she noticed my ring, and that it was very pretty for a man. I wondered if I wanted to proceed. She seemed kind of "Bohemian" with the peasant skirt and all. Being me (and not that bright), I pressed on. I told her that the ring was pretty for a man, but looked right at home on a woman, which I dressed as occasionally. She looked at me and said, "No way! You're a handsome man. You dress up as a woman?" I told her that I did, and did it for fun. She smiled and asked if I had any pictures, nodding to my iPad. I wanted to say, "Duh! I'm a crossdresser. Of course I have pictures! Got a few hours to look through them?" :)
I showed her a few. She looked approvingly and said, "Nice Photoshop work." I told her that it was me in the pictures, and that the only time Photoshop was used was to resize them. She said, "Well then, that's totally not fair. You look great as a man and fantastic as a woman. I could never do that." She then asked if I did it all the time. I told her that no, I only did it every now and then and said, "You're a woman. You know how much effort goes into looking pretty. I'm a guy. I'm basically lazy. If I had to do it every day, it wouldn't be nearly as fun." She agreed and said it would be nice if she felt like just slipping on some sweats and going into work, she could do it without the societal pressure to "be the perfect woman."
We talked for a bit more - were even the last two to get on the plane. As we parted ways, she told me that I was totally cool and to keep thumbing my nose at society. I, being old, told her to finish school - and to have a great life.
So, my adventure ends - for now. Kimberly, I have been bitten by the bug. I can't wait to do this again. Next time, I'll see what people think when I'm totally dressed.

Excellent, I suppose I can forgive your disobedience. But always remember that quote from the Star Trek episode Gamesters of Triskelion: "Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded"
So, in the words of Persephone, I went "Full Androgyny." I still had a pair of Talbot's khakis and a crisp white cotton ladies fitted Oxford shirt in my closet.
Excellent, did you wear it unbuttoned a bit with a cute cami underneath?
I had to go with boy shoes, unfortunately. Pity, I had a pair of flats that would've looked totally cute with this outfit!
Pity indeed.
Sure, I could've left it at that, but then again, I'm me, and therefore not that bright. I thought I needed a little something more. Oh yeah! Makeup!
Hmmph, "not that bright"...that is "wrong thinking" keep that up and I won't bet any more quatloos on you. Simply put...you wanted to feel pretty so you put on makeup, and that is a natural thing to do, lady.

I'm betting my daily androgyny is noticeable as well, though I don't do makeup yet or wear the hair loose.
She turned to a male teller and said, "Did you know he was wearing makeup?" He looked at me and said, "Makeup? Is he?" She turned to me and said, "See? Guys are so clueless!"
Trust me, they are when it comes to this sort of thing.

Personally, I'd rather have a Nokia N900 (the maemo one that's essentially running Linux)
I said, "Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?" and showed her my favorite Kathi picture.
I keep VM pictures on my PSP, and there is a couple on my phone.
Then I fly home tomorrow afternoon. I won't be pretty, since all my makeup is home, but at least I did it a bit.
What? You didn't take an entire Caboodle/Sephora train case full of makeup with you? That is NOT the Makeupista way and is thusly "wrong thinking".
Kimberly, I can see the attraction to Flying Pretty. I can't wait until I can "take off the training wheels" and do it for real. Someday.

Me too!
Kathi, you're such a techie!!! Did your new toy come in pink? :)
No, it doesn't. The N900 does: http://www.pinkphone.org/tag/n900-pink/ The VM wants! My PSP is a mystic silver, not the pretty lavender one that you can only get in the Hannah Montana bundle...darn it.
Seriously, you should have listened to Veronica, she's a very smart woman.

Yes, I should listen to Veronica. Live and learn, eh?
Not live and learn, obeying me should be axiomatic and automatic. It is futile to resist my powers.

"Wrong thinking is punished, right thinking is just as swiftly rewarded"Great, now all I can think about is quatloos and pulsing brains in giant Mason jars. Thanks. :)
Excellent, did you wear it unbuttoned a bit with a cute cami underneath?Nope. My "unmentionables" are packed, along with most of my girl stuff. The only thing I had left in my closet is my Calvin Klein formal gown (I am not going to pack that gorgeous thing in a box!) and my pair of Talbot's khakis. I forgot about them because they're hanging on a pant/skirt hanger along with my boy pants. It was funny, a month or so ago when my son came home from college and needed a pair of pants for church. He pulled them down, started to put them on and told my wife that a pair of her pants got mixed up with mine. She said, "Let me see," grumbled and said "They're not mine. I have never worn a size two in my life." "Ah" my son said (he knows). The blouse was my wife's. I didn't wear a cami under it because none of my wife's are pretty enough. :)
Ooooh! Newest Apple hipster toy! Work that Reality Distortion Field...where's my black turtleneck. :-)Now now, I'm an Apple developer. I need it, uhhhh, . . . for work. Yeah, that's it!
Personally, I'd rather have a Nokia N900 (the maemo one that's essentially running Linux)Eh. I've played with one for months. The interface is klunky and a bit slow (odd, considering it's a speedy ARM chip), and the phone just seems huge. The boys from Finland send their preproduction stuff to me all the time to ensure it works with our products. I could tell you about the phone I'm playing with now, but I'd have to kill you.
Well, you DO want to do it when you want. So all you have to do is figure out how to enable doing that. :-)Gee, is that all?! Wow, I had no idea it was that easy! :)
Ahh they'd probably just say how skinny you are and how well you walk in the heels and have great legs...as always. :-)I know! It's like I'm an "anti-woman" - their attention is always directed downwards towards my legs. I want to say, "Hello! I'm up here! No, not my face, my boobs. Can't you objectify me even a little? :)
Great post, Kathi.Veronica, I love your posts. The time you take, the care and humor that goes into them. I always look forward to them. Thanks, girlfriend!!
. . . but there is no way I could ever do it. I'm way too chicken!Victoria, to steal/twist a phrase, "Yes you can!" You simply get dressed, take a deep breath and go. Is it scary? Sure. A little bit. Is it worth it? Yes. A lot bit!
When you say, "Fly to Philly for an install" what does that mean? What do you do for a living?I am a social worker by training, but a geek by trade. Basically, I use the skills I gained over the years as a hobby, and my company pays me to be a geek. I am a R&D engineer at a high tech company. I design and test products. I also help our tech guys and our field engineers support those products. All of those guys were unavailable, so I was it. I helped the customer install and configure a $20,000 storage system.
I'm 46 and I think you rock! You have courage! You are also much more pretty than I am!I was, until recently, 46 and I think you rock! You're here. That's great. Now, have some adventures of your own and help others here to do the same. As for the courage part, I don't think so. I'm just a typical guy that has an atypical hobby. Who needs courage when you have no sense of how your actions may affect you. See? Typical guy thinking. :)
I say yay to you! You did it, you have the wings now. It will be all about outfits and shoes from now on.Oh, Michelle. Dear, sweet Michelle. It was always about the outfits and the shoes! :)

Not sure which one has more Swoon Factor, . . .Cassie, for me it was not just the people who interacted personally with me, but even those who simply smiled at me. Not that I'm out greedily seeking it, but I will take any acceptance I can get. To me, a smile or kind word is validation enough. I already know who I am. It's still nice to meet those that can see it as well.
any pictures?I did take three, but deleted them from the camera after checking it out. It looked like my daughter has been playing with it again. The pictures came out in weird sepia tones. I was running late to get to the airport, so decided against pictures. Maybe next time?

Yes, I should listen to Veronica. Live and learn, eh?
Yes, I'm a techie. No, it doesn't come in pink, but I'm sure there are some cute cases.. My wife said that Dooney & Bourke now have an iPad case. Sounds cute! Veronica is wise beyond her young and limited years :D.
I don't have an IPad (Yet) but if D&B is making cases for them that is more reason to get one!
Kathi you are an inspiration beyond words. One question where do you bank. Your tellers rock!

One question where do you bank. Your tellers rock! That they do! Feel free to drop by the Wells Fargo branch in Riverdale, Utah. I'll let them know a gorgeous blond is coming to open an account! With your attitude, you'll have no issues whatsoever. As they have told me, my attitude is one reason why no one blinks when I sashay into a room. I act as if I belong there, which is simple to pull off, because I do belong there!
