Yesterday, I picked up at the Courthouse my approved and official Petition for a Name Change. And it was so anti-climactic...
(Clerk) Here you are. How many official copies do you want?
(me) Errr, is 4 OK?
(Clerk) That's gonna be 102$
Still, it will be a couple of months before I can really use, due to personal legal issues, but it feels good to have it.
Cheers,
RockerTerri

Awesome!
Now comes the fun of sending a copy of that to everyone you have ever met, done business with, and even a few that you never even knew existed!
Congratulations on a huge step!

Congrats! I know this means a lot. I am not quite sure how you can not use it for a couple of months as that is now your legal name but then again, we can call ourselves whatever we want in the good US of A! :D

Congrats Melanie, it is a great feeling, isn't it? Mine was legal for about 6 or 7 weeks before I actually started changing anything. And now, four months later, I am still at it!

Congratulations Melanie! Honey, if you'd filled out a fee waiver you would have gotten those four copies for free. But congrats! Now how about that DMV form? Got that filled out and signed by your endo? Let's get that F on that drivers license. Carol

Congratulations Melanie!
You know, be careful of the time between changing your name and using it. Legally you can't use the old name... be especially careful of getting your ID's and credit cards matching up at about the same time. Very shortly after name change I had to make an emergency trip to California to visit my sick Mom. Got to the car rental place and they would not rent me the car because of my CC's having my old name and Dr. lic having the new one ... I even had a copy of the court order etc with me.
Aren't those xerox's pricey !!! All that money for embossing the sheet with the county seal .... arrrggg.... !!

Congratulations, Melanie!!! :hugs:
Having my name made legit was a major milestone for me and even made dealing with the DMV, Social Security, assorted creditors, and the such a very enjoyable experience for me when filling out the paperwork or explaining over the telephone.

Just wait till people start using the name all the time with you. In time you won't even remember your previous name. For me, I was the one making mistakes all the time, I'd answer the phone with "Mike Kelly how can I help you?" and people would say to me "Kim that's not your name, get with it girl", or something similar. Enjoy your name, it is yours now. Kimberly Marie Kelly :battingeyelashes:

Thank you all for the nice replies. It makes the wait even harder...
To explain things a bit, my wife and I are filing divorce in Canada in a few months. And since I'm Canadian, I have the start the long sequence of name change in Canada. So to avoid making the divorce more painful than it already is, I agreed to wait after the divorce is completed before starting my name change process. Something like the day after...
Thanks again!

That is a noble thing you are doing to wait to use your new name until after your legal proceedings are over. I wish you well.
