View Full Version : Can I Really Wear This?

Julie

After being reminded this past weekend that the only dress I've ever felt I look good in is my halter formal and wanting forever to wear dresses (but they don't like me) I decided to go on a hunt for another halter dress in hopes of finding at least one more dress that seems to work with my guy body.

Here's the dress I now own:
https://home.comcast.net/~julimarie/images/8-05/promdress2.jpg

This is the dress I was thinking of buying online (forget the model when replying please  ):
http://www.fredericks.com/images/2/21123_86_itm_b_5200.jpg

I really love dresses but it seems every time I buy one I take it back because I look like a linebacker. I think the halter minimizes broad shoulders, maybe that's why it works for me, or at least that one dress did. The dress above is $54.00 and is made of polyester/spandex which probably means it shows all the 'extras' around the waistline. I'm just so leery as I've bought too many clothes that I liked but didn't like me.

Please be honest because I feel, deep down inside, I won't be as lucky with this dress as I was with the one above. And ladies (GGs), you especially I'll listen to, as long as you're honest.

Well, Julie, like you said, the first one sure did work well for you - just great. I'd say go for it (esp. if it's returnable, just in case). Tammi

Hi Julie!

It's a gorgeous dress. Will it work for you? I don't know.

Here's my suggestion.

When you get the dress, try it on and take pictures from all sides - front, left, right, back, and even quarter views. Either do it with a camera/tripod/timer setup, or ask a friend to help. Then look at the pictures. Do you like what you see? Do you look good, not, or somewhere inbetween? Does the style work for you? Does it complement your figure?

You'll know from the start if it works for you. If it does, then whenever you wear it you can do so with confidence. If it doesn't work, then too you'll know and can return it for something that works better for you.

Hope this helps!

Hmm, first issue I see is the split sides. While they look sexy and all, they might show too much if the dress settles to 'high on the hip'. The other thing I see is the front around the breasts doesn't cover as much as your current dress, so I'd be cautious about your forms showing.

Now if the dress is $54, how much is the model? :flirt:

Call me a narcissist or what have you (aren't we all in a way?), but if I like something online and or there's a picture in a magazine...why not scan it, then superimpose your head and or body on it with self-taken poses that match the pose done by the model? Could give it a try, get a feel for what it 'might' be like.

Just a suggestion... ;)

I think it's the back that will be the biggest challenge. While I absolutely love open backs like that, I think it would be difficult to disguise a masculine physique. Whether you can make it work or not is unknown to me, so I suggest you purchase the dress, with the intent of returning it if need be, and take lots and lots of photos and put on a show for us. While everyone tells you how gorgeous you look, in that way we all do to one another, I'll slip in a secret word (like "mole") to let you know that I think it's the right dress for you.
Damn, I just blew the secret word, didn't I? Give me a minute and I'll come up with something else. :p

:) Dear Julie,
I would suggest : NO
Sorry, but you ask for an HONEST vew of this dress on you. (or any CD)
This dress is beautyful, and with male masculine shoulders even more, BUT...
This Dress needs a Hip/Waist of 0.7 to wear I think. You know what I mean, for example if you have 35" hips then your Waist should be around 25".
It's hard for us CD's to archive this.... :(
BUT this is just my thoughts, Dear Julie, very honest and I hope that I didn't hurt you.
Biiig Bear Hugs from Norbie :p

Julie, you look great in that photo and you wear the dress so beautifully (bitch) :p The only way to see if the dress will like you is to buy it :D I think it will suit you, you have a great figure. Besides.... if it don't fit or look right.... *PM's you my address* ;) you can always send it me hehe... j/k but, you can send it back right?

Hi Julie, check out www.dots.com. Dot's is an inexpensive clothing store where they sell dresses, skirts, pants, tops and even shoes with prices being under $20 for most items. The have a few stores in Chicago area....

I bought half of my items from dots....

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT! IT'S MINE, BE@TCH! :D

Seriously, all I can say about the picture of you in the dress you already own is...YOIKES! You look gourgeous. And as all the other girls have said, if it's returnable, why not get it? I think Stephanie has a good suggestion about taking pictures and then seeing if you like. If you recall the name/style of the dress and where it's from, please pass it on! :)

Hi Julie,

the dress you have now is beautiful and you look beautiful in it. The one you want to buy....are you sticking with the color black? You might be like my sweety, have every thing they own in black! But I know we all buy black because it is slimming, ect ect.

ANyway, um, I am with Tristen I know you have taken hrt, but do you still wear forms?, and if they are attachable it might work. But then again if you are a c cup form they might show. Check for the stores return policy as well.

You look like you could pull it off, but this looks like one of those dresses that you wont' know about till you get in on your body. Also, just attching your head to the photo might now work, your dims are totally different from the girl in the pic.

godo luck, I would say buy with caution and a good return policy only.

I'm a bit dubious, but worse case you can always return it.

It's gorgeous but it's showing a bit of cleavage up front, which means your forms might peek out. And since you've got a little extra up front, like I do, a smooth spandex front is probably going to show off things you'd prefer to keep hidden. I don't know if you still use hip pads, but they'd probably would be difficult to use with this dress, since it's clingy (which will cause the pad to to show through).

I actually think your current dress works really well. The sash creates a high waistline and since it looks like the fabric below falls away it both makes your hips look bigger and is more forgiving of things you'd prefer to play down. You're right about the wide straps. Whether it's a halter top or not, wide straps do make your shoulders look narrower. Spaghetti straps are bad news for a CD.

The only way for sure to tell if a particular style/dress will work with you is to try it on. The one in the pic looks great, but can't tell bout the one that you are thinking of buying, until you, not the gg, is the model.

I really think you look great in the dress that you already own. However, saying that, go for the new dress. It most likely will look smashing on you.
Wish I had your figure.

The new dress would only look perfect on a size six, very buff person with a perfect, blemish free back, arms, and legs. And breasts. It's a dress for someone who has absolutely NOTHING to hide, because there's nowhere to hide it.

If you think you could pull it off, go for it, but I wouldn't advise even my size six GF's to buy it if it can't be returned.

Here's one you'd look great in, it's sexy and the wider fabric around the neck really would take the width off your shoulders.

It's just a suggestion....I don't mean this one exactly of course, just the shape idea and the flowing skirt--- all very femme but not so bare nekkid. If your legs are very muscular, this would hide them and still be very femmy, but if you like to show your legs you could get something like this only shorter.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/sophisticatedlady_1857_242590825.gif

And here's a link to the site....and there's several halter dresses there.

http://www.sophisticatedlady.us/thlibldrun1.html

Also, the one you're wearing does look very nice.

Here's a short one that doesn't reveal so much, but still in on the same planet (Planet Sexpot!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/sophisticatedlady_1857_111660002.gif

Now----shoulders would be minimized, not so much revealed, and you would have to have an armed guard surround you wherever you go! :)

OMG! I love that dress! Combine a halter top with a handkerchief hem and I'm in heaven! Then make it in red? :D My head's spinning! $88....?? Gotta consider this one seriously!

Laura just called and told me there's an anniversary party at her favorite girl bar. She wanted Julie to come and join her. Can you imagine showing up in that red dress? She saw me in the black formal and liked it. I just wonder what her reaction would be with that red dress. If I had it, I'd go but I'm staying in tonight. I think I'll be dreaming of red......

I think you should get it--- you'd look very hot in it. :)

You have the coloring for it, too. And only add a SMALL pair of earrings and a nice girlie watch OR a little bracelet (silver), and a pair of strppy sandals and away you go!

(oh...and make sure your lipstick is in the same red family, too! And pale, pale pink eyeshadow, not much.

Hey, maybe I should get this dress!

Have fun. :D

The thought process about purchasing the red halter dress with the handkerchief hem has been completed.

The pros and cons have been weighed.

Emotions played a major part in the decision.

Logic was infected by emotion. ;)

May I have the envelope please?

And the decision is.........

PURCHASE IT!

The order was just placed. Now I'm hoping it looks good on me.

You look like at hottie and the dress has sooo much class. I can relate with the shoulder issue. I love the off or thin strap shoulder tops and dresses. Im over 6 ft tall,,very thin and can slink into a size 2 with easy ( yeah,, give it up girls ) For myself i kinda freak over the male shoulder issue,,,its just me

OMG! What will I do about shoes? And what type of purse would work? I have some red heels but they are more like espadrilles. One is all denim material and the other is red with beige macrame. Neither would work with that dress. I don't like (or should I say my feet don't like) heels with no support under the balls of the feet which is why I tend to prefer platforms. Does anyone know where I might find red platforms that would go with that dress? And then I'll need help with a purse. I want something I can carry some cosmetics as well as a small wallet since I won't have a date to carry anything for me  .

You know, this is fun. I have always relied on only myself to put an outfit together but doing it this way, with the help of you ladies (CDs & GGs both), is so much more enjoyable. Thank you so much! And I promise to share pics, as long as I don't look like a linebacker!

I hate you:p That dress is to die for OMG. Anyhow not sure if these really go but I can look better when I know what style you are up for. So let me know if these are close. They look comfy:

They are kind of like what I have now, too casual for that dress. Ideally I'm hoping to find red platforms with wrap around ankle straps in all red (no cork or other color heels or soles).

Sorry if I'm so picky!

I think something like this would work especialy if you can find a matching purse

Sigrid

I found these at Zappos.com... I did a search specifically for platforms. I'm not sure if these would give you the support your looking for and then there's the flowers on the heels. I thought I'd through them out there anyway.

Hey Julie! Getting the dress? Yeah! Can't wait to see it.

A beaded bag solves the problem of matching the exact color red.

OR OR OR you could play it safe with the matching thing (I would) and go with these for shoes:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/SarahBlack.jpg

Found here:

http://www.gownsbysimpleelegance.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?store_code=SE&screen=PROD&product_code=SarahBlack9043

and a black beaded bag:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/blackbag1.jpg

Actually, the more I think about it, the black would be better because they wouldn't fight with the dress, plain satin pumps (make sure they're comfortable) and a beaded bad, then just "diamond" studs and a little dress watch. Nothing else.

The evening bags at this site or so nice and reasonably priced I'm glad I found it!

http://www.eveningelegance.com/cgi-bin/store/boutique.pl?dept=purses

Let us know how you look! And remember, go easy on the jewelry, let the dress and your smile be the statement!

This would be a pretty bag, too, even with the black shoes:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/473rd-i.jpg

Have fun, babe!

susandrea
08-20-2005, 10:26 PM
Or if you want a more summer sandal, get this in BLACK as the red may not match (and the whole look would be a bit more casual):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/0816_22231_dt.jpg

Found here:
http://www.lernercatalog.com/lerner/search/EA_search.asp?

And a simple black leather clutch with a jeweled clasp (you can find them for about $30 at Macys or even Sears.

Can't wait to see your pics! :)

P.S. For some reason I don't see this dress with a wedge heel--- it's too dressy for that. But I have been known to be wrong on occasion!

susandrea
08-20-2005, 11:04 PM
And I found these here (dressy, but not expensive and not a killer high heel but still sexy):

http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/productlist.aspx?CatTyp=DEP&DeptID=9452&Dep=Shoes&PCatID=28653&PCat=Women%27s+Dress&CatID=29518&Cat=Special+Occasion&cmAMS_T=U3&cmAMS_C=C4

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/loh.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/loh2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v713/susansqueezy/loh3.jpg

And all would look nice with one of the dressy evening bags, both items for about $70! Can't beat it!

I like the first pair because the wider the heel, the smaller your feet will look in comparison, and they'll be comfortable, too.

Julie,

I think your right about the broad shoulders bit. In the dress your looking at it's way to strappy to get away with unless you have narrow shoulders. I've only got 5 dresses (I'm a skirt girl) but they all cover my shoulders fully - two of them have a sort of cowl (I'm not sure the proper name but hope you know what I mean - you can sort of see it in this dress (http://www.longtallsally.com/productkit.aspx?KitName=SPR0530A&ref=KitSearch) I bought a while ago and they descibe it as a floaty sleeve and neckline) over the shoulders to hide them a bit more than the basic dress shoulders on there own. Stick with wider straps is my advice (for what it's worth).
