My wife was watching a recorded episode of Oprah that aired the other day. It just happened to feature a woman named Kimberly Reed, who was once a male, and the star quarterback of his football team.
She related her story of having always endured an intense gender dysphoria, culminating in gender reassignment in her late twenties. She also produced a documentary on her life experience called "Prodigal Sons", which included an in-depth look at how this affected her familial relationships, especially with her older adopted brother.
It affected me, too. I kept thinking, "There but for the grace of God go I." It brought home the courageousness of such individuals who opt to travel down this path. I found myself envying her in her successful transition. She is well-adjusted to her life now, and is thriving as a woman. And she is very beautiful.
I would encourage anyone dealing with such issues to look into her and her documentary. It is certainly very revealing.
