Has anyone changed their name and then forgot to answer to it when someone calls you by it? Curious to hear the stories.

I've changed my legal name & No, I cant say I have ever forgotten to answer to my new name, but whenever I'm in public & hear my birth name called, it does grab my attention even though it wasn't directed to me...lol

Karen's birth name was Hey You. She always responded to it. :lol2::lol2::lol2::lol2:
And today, any time she hears it, she perks up! :hugs:

Same thing here with me, I love my name too much to like not hear or respond lol. The only difference is that occasionally when I hear my 'dead' guy name, esp in a crowded public setting, I make a conscious effort to not look or wutever. I figure whoever and whatever it is can't be all that important as are most things from the past life.

That's true. Things could always be worse than what one is going through.

I haven't forgotten to answer to it yet, but I have forgotten to use it a couple of times. One poor customer spoke to me 3 times on my first day back after the name change and got three different names:
"Good morning ... my name is Robert" WRONG!
"Good morning ... my name is Rianna"
"Good morning ... my name is Rob... uh...Rianna"
I apologised and told him I had just changed my name and allowed him top use whichever he felt most comfortable with that for call.
Whadda mistake-a to make-a

I'm cheating; when people call me by my given name I can pretend they're calling me a shorter version of my female name: "Kris" :D

I was an accountant for many years before transitioning and had to sign alot of checks with my name and I have occassionally started to sign my old name now when writing a check from habit. Fortunately my new name is close to my old (Raymond to Rayne) and I ketch myself in time and I either write over it or start a new check. I changed my name as quick as I could so that I did not have to have looks when I went to the bank in dress and sign my old name. Now that is all behind me and I do not respond to the old name any more.

I began living FT July 2, 2007 (I shall always remember that date, it was also the date I somehow just KNEW my name was Lainie.
That week I went to the bank and changed my signature to my new name. Last wk of Nov 2007 I filed for legal name change, and it was granted Jan 8.
Jan 10 I went into the hospital with my new name, female, new SS card and Medicare Card,(Not sure I really had the cards yet, my name change paper might have done it. Then the medical history nurse asked if I had a hysterectomy. I was there 8 hours for $8000 for my 2nd pacemaker. And they overcharged medicare $5757 and when I reported it, nothing happened.

On the line of Karen and Pam I had a few, okay many, names that I have answered to but none of them can be used or printed here. LOL My given name was Terry Gene and now it is Teri Jean.

Cool Teri. I've got a similar name thing. My given name is Terry Joe and I will change it to Terri Arleen. Arleen was the middle name I would have had if I had been born a girl (which I've discovered that in fact I was born a girl with a birth defect.)

I don't want to get this too far off topic, but IMO that's cheating. One of the main reasons I changed my name to Pamela was I wanted a name that was different from "his". To me it was reinforcement to everyone that knew me that I'm not him; I AM a woman.

The security guy at work asked me how I wanted to be addressed now that I have my new security Id, so I told him my name is Rianna, but I have heard people shorten it to "Riann" or "Ri" and that both are fine with me. When I said that I might even respond to "Oy You!" he replied that there is no answer to that :heehee:
Kimberly Marie Kelly

I would constantly answer the phone with "this is Mike Kelly" and my coworkers would remind me, that's not my name anymore, that it's Kimberly. That lasted about a month or so. After 8 months now, I don't make that mistake anymore, my name is Kimberly and it is so natural to me now that I don't even think about my old name, except when my brother calls me. He accepts me, but he just can't call me Kimberly, not yet anyway. Kimberly Marie Kelly :battingeyelashes:

okay my situation is a bit different because I had to keep my male first name for the sake of keeping my job (Missouri does not have an discrimination law to protect us) but I have been going by my new name with my Docs so long and my wife I have not failed to respond yet but ... I did start to write the wrong name a couple of times
