Hi girls!

I guessing this may have been covered before, but I’m thinking about taking up beading as a hobby. I posted a thread on the Accessories page asking for advise or tips on this, but it also got me wondering how many of us have hobbies or pastimes that would be considered, in most circles, to be a strictly feminine hobby/activity – other than things directly related to CDing such as an interest in fashion, makeup, or feminine attire. I’m thinking more along the lines of needle point, making bead jewelry, that kind of thing.

And before I get into TOO much trouble here: no, I don’t think that these hobbies SHOULD be restricted to (or from) anyone based on gender, but the simple fact is that some activities seem to be dominated by one gender or the other.

So, what, if any, “feminine” hobbies do you have?
:hugs:

I'm considering revisiting macrame, crocheting, or knitting

I feel like an old woman LOL

Well I'm the only gurl in 2 different yahoo sewing groups. And both a world wide. I was doing a lot of quilting and I have a computer controled embroidery sewing machine. Actually I have 4 machines. I also love to cook and I guess my most gurly hobby is shopping for womens clothes...BJ

I do the cooking around here but lots of men like to cook. My main hobby is painting watercolors. There are lots of watercolorists that are men but my guess is the vast majority are women. The departure point is my subject material which most certainly isn't feminine.

I collect dolls, the 18 inch ceramic ones. I am teaching myself to sew as in making dresses. I also love bellydancing and I do perform.

I keep in-shape and work-out mostly with taking adult recreational ballet classes. Great way to meet nice people and get a nice work out.

Exactly. The women at work seem to spend any spare time browsing the net for clothes, make up, purses, shoes, etc.. I've gone through whole nights looking at prom dresses, then trying to see what was available in my size. Then dyable shoes to wear. Styling a wig to match the picture. By the time I'm done, it's a day later.
Yes, shopping, and the eternal pursuit of beauty. It's not just a past time, it's a lifestyle.

Lately I've been trying to perfect the art of painting my toe nails, changing colors al least once a week. I'm getting better, practice makes perfect...

Cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, taking care of kids... oh wait, that's not a hobby, that's my job. :p

I guess I don't have any girly hobbies these days. I used to grow flowers, but I haven't been doing that lately. My wife wants to teach me to sew--which would be very handy--but it looks like it would be so tedious, especially with my bad eyesight. :(

Beading for me. I have a hobby box full of beads, threads, crimp rings, pliers, jump rings, catches, beads, old jewelery to recycle... And when I'm in the mood it's an enjoyable and relaxing little pastime.

I'm slowly improving, getting the hang of what looks good, what looks gaudy. The nice thing is, beading and craft shops also provide opportunity for me to make up any style of clip on earring I like, and I can use slim, silver screw-clips rather than those awful ugly clips that most shop bought clip-ons come with.

I don't really have any male or female hobbies.
They all seem to fit either quite well. Never could understand why some people try to say an activity is either male or female. If you enjoy it, do it.

I am not sure I would call them hobbies really. I cook every day because I like the activity and because Elizabeth can't cook:D, I sow, I clean, do laundry, decorate, read fashion magazines, etc. I've always done those things

Exactly. I knit, needle-point, cross-stitch, a kitemaker and have tried my hand at many crafts as well as mechanical engineering. They tend to complement one another - requiring patience, dexterity etc.

Arts seen as feminine such as knitting were traditionally performed by men and children way back when so it is modern presumption and the media who love to label everything with a little knowledge and determine its gender 'applicability' for us all.

Nearly passed this one up as it did not apply to me.
Then I realized that I did have one. Since my divorce 3 years ago I have been cooking for myself.
Also to make it more pleasurable I always cook as Suzy.

Have fun, SUZY

I have a sewing machine, managed to make a basic flared skirt. It's a bit frayed after some use, but now I know where I need to improve.

I found this tablecloth laying around with a floral pattern that looks awful on a table, but it would be beautiful as a skirt. So I'm thinking of converting it. It's already round and just the right size, only hem I have to make is the top with the elastic.

I have been sewing since probably 5th great, have done needle point. I also embroider. I enjoy it. But I have seen GG into other traditional guy hobbies. Cars, and shooting. I guess I must be the exception as I hate most all guy sports. football, hockey, soccer, Etc.

I walk everyday & night to help stay aerobically fit - will mix it up & down slow, medium & fast to a songlist designed to beat that way. Makes is easy. Don't have to think - just keep pace. Point is...I'll almost always take my camera with me so...photography I'd have to say is a hobby of sorts for me (amateur at best). Stopping now & then when on an atmospheric day when Nature's gone out her way to paint such a breath-taking display of light & color that forever fades, this way & that, the sky the trees the wind that blows, tall grass moving to-and-fro, in waves of agitation they plead, something important but what? I try to comprehend but cannot perceive. Flowers passed by randomly , birds perched close in fields of green & gold...all are worthy pics to pose, to be look at later, or not, filed away then...probly never seen again! LOL... Oooh and the moon! Is sooo cool to shoot. With hands steadied by the buildings edge or on a car hood, can zoom all the way in, hold your breath & press. Viola! Got it! Image of another world, edgy craters, shades of gray, cradled by mysterious moonlit clouds of cotton...our world just below...

Also...jewelry! A 'hobby' in a way. I love keeping up, looking at the latest offerings of everything...makes me feel clean and oh so...whatever, I don't know...just...good! But only Quality (i.e. pricey pricey!) diamonds & gems artistically mounted on gold, yellow or white and sometimes two-tone too (sometimes silver must do). Precious supports, elegant frameworks, smooth and curving, creamy dreamy & creatively desinged to be: rings on fingers worn, or with seductive appeal adorn, the inextricably sexy lobes of delicate ears that hear the worlds finest whisper; pendants of every inspiration, simple or intricate, eye catching, dangerous; chains of woven gold, precious lace, round & round embraces necks precious ever more; bracelets slipping sliding pretty, glamorous bling on white, tanned or colored wrists the contrast hard to resist from staring; fun, hip & adventurous anklets, for who would wear such an expensive thing down so low - thats hot! From classic to friendship or fun, well groomed or hazzled, the body bedazzled always looks good enuf to eat. A flawless carat weight of clarity, precisely cut, dissects white light - the fraud revealed! What was assumed pure is now a mix of everything; pain joy hope & faith, good & bad all colors freed; a scintillating display of fire & ice! Diamonds are fine, a class unto their own. But then! Come the colored gems, genuine, authentic, natural not synthetic... emeralds green, sapphires blue, rubies red. A personal fave is London blue topaz. These cleanly cut, multi-faceted mysteries, transmute light into sheer delight, precious magic everlasting, expensive eye candy that captivates, never satisfies your hunger for beauty, only makes you want it more.

Hobby this? Well...yes. If collecting butterflies qualifies, so do precious natural gems, studying, buying, wearing & keeping them. A library of light, frozen forms of sheer delight. Natures gift. Jesus...I just turned myself on! Lol... Used to wonder "what IS it with girls & their diamonds??" - now I know. Oh my!
