Hi ladies,
lately I've been wanting to get some professional pics done of me, thinking along the lines of a transformative shoot? One where we get pics of me getting dolled up, then in nice poses.
Does anybody know of a good place in Melbourne where I can get some decent photos for a reasonable price?
Thanks heaps. Chloe

Being in the United States, I'm not going to be any help, but I've been trying to find a place like you've described in the area of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Good luck.

I looked into this in USA and the only reasonable places were CD makeover shops like Glamour Boutique. Their prices are incredibly inexpensive. regular photogs want hundreds for sitting fees plus they will only sell you copies not the originals. One wanted $1000 for the originals plus the shoot costs. Good Luck. One suggestion if you don't care if the photos are kept private might be university art students.

I'm a pro, but in Germany. If 20 of you get together in one place, like a hotel, perhaps I could fly in? How does that sound. I do have a pro lighting equipment and I'm a good photographer. We'ld have a lot of fun.

As someone who aspires to provide portrait photography to other TG people, and also as someone who knows a bit about photography, I have to say that almost without exception (2 exceptions that I can think of off-hand) the "pro" portrait photos provided by people who do makeovers that I've seen are typically dreadful, nowhere near what is truly professional-quality photography. If you go to traditional portrait studios, they make a lot of their money from providing the customer with prints, thus they will never turn over the originals to you unless you're willing to compensate them for losing money from selling prints to you, that's why they ask so much for the originals. That's the same business model as wedding photographers use. That's the way that the business is traditionally done. Prints are a significant source of income for studios.
So if you truly want professional photography, be prepared to pay a bit more. If I can ever get my studio together, I intend to offer my services for quite reasonable prices, hoping that it will result in lots of customers. Maybe I'll be able to invite folks here in for portraits soon.
That all said, check out Transformations by Gina (http://www.transformationsbygina.com/) to see how it should be done. She does terrific work, both with makeovers and photography, for prices that I feel are incredibly reasonable considering the quality of her work.
Edited: In another thread, someone mentioned TG North (http://www.tgnorth.com/), a service I hadn't seen before, and after looking their site over, I am impressed, looks like they do really nice work for decent prices too, so there's another good one.
Jamie Austin in the NE also does really good makeovers if you're going for the ultra-glam look and does decent photo work, but the last time I checked, prices are higher there. The Austin's Angels site is apparently gone but Jamie has a MySpace page here (http://www.myspace.com/jamieaustinsangels).

I'm a professional and I certainly don't charge hundreds for a sitting unless it's a very intensive sitting involving a lot of time and resources. The question of originals versus copies may relate to copyright, which in the UK remains with the photographer unless assigned to the client. I usually give my clients the original files but retain copyright beyond their personal use. At the end of the day it's about what I agree with you, the client - anything is possible.
It sounds to me like you've looked at the wrong sort of photographer, maybe the "glamour" types instead of the "family" type of photographer. The suggestion to look at students is quite a good one, for a number of reasons, but don't expect consistent results.
Ultimately you get what you pay for. I believe in delivering value for money, which goes some way to explain why I don't live a jet set lifestyle :heehee:

Do you have a Wall Mart there? They usually have a photo studio set up. I think it was $8.00 for a bunch of pics, with one pose. More poses add $20 more..BJ

I know this doesn't help the OP much but if anyone is looking for a professional photographer in the Ohio area, Glenda Berkshire is the one. Does great work. She also does business cards and Photoshop work. If you have a great photo with a minor flaw or want a different background she can easily fix it for you.

Does she have a web site?

What I do is set up my digital camera on a tripod with the A/V cable to the TV set.
Make up a decent background, flowers in my case, set the timer for 10 sec, then you can pose and get your smile/face the way you like before the camera snaps.
Benefit, free, at home, private & confidential.
Hugs
