Does it hurt to get your ears pierced? I am the world's worse for "pain."
Do they do both at the same time or one horrific shot of pain then go though it again in a few minutes after the first?
Do they numb your ear lobes and does it work?
Just call me "Chicken" Traci from now on!

I have two in each ear, to me the pain is minimal, the first ear was done and then the next...no numbing was done. If you have ever had a shot from the doctor, you can get your ears pierced.

It doesn't. I even pierced one by myself when I was a kid. I used ice cubes to numb it as the stud would enter slowly. The sound of skin layers breaking was far worse than any pain afterwards. At jewelery stands, it's nothing. It is so fast you don't feel anything other than a slight burning sensation afterwards.

Just go to like a local Claire's and pop for the 19 buck deal or wutever that includes the starters of your choice and a bottle of peroxide. It'll take like less time than it took to type this and no pain to speak of lol. I also have 2 piercings in each ear, no big deal.

My wife's sister did this to my wife when they were young teens. No way will I opt for that!

My mother did mine with a needle, and it was fine. She numbed them with ice first, but I don't think it made a lot of difference (the numbing had mostly worn off by the time she finished.) There was very little pain - maybe some when the needle first went in, and a little bit when she messed up putting an earring in, but beyond that it went swimmingly. Well, if you don't mind feeling each and every layer of ear flesh as the needle pokes through it.

No it will not hurt, yes they will do one then the other and no they do not numb them and if they did that needle would hurt more then the piercing it`s self.
I have three in each ear which i done myself if it hurt that much i would have stopped at one in each ear (or would i )

That was only on the last two as i could only find a rusty 4" nail :yippee:
Just be careful not to get into the habit of constantly checking to see if the backs are pushed in tight enough as this will make them sore but just give the stud a little twist every so often to stop then sticking to your ear.

I won't say there was no pain, but it was fairly mild. More pain than getting numbed by the dentist, but far far less pain than (for example) stubbing your toe or hitting your "funny bone". The greater part of the pain dies out within a couple of seconds. Yes, there might be a bit of pain that lingers near the piercing for a bit, but I have everyday aches and pains that are more significant.
Some people recommend Claire's; I recommend getting it done at a real piercing place, as the likelyhood of infection is lower at a real piercing place, and the infection can hurt a lot more than the piercings.
I'm kind of a pain wuss myself, but I had no problem going through ear piercing.

When I had mine done at the mall. It took only a second for each ear. There was a pinch and it was in. Not really a pain. You do have to keep them clean and wear them for a few weeks so the holes do not close. So since you are going to wear then in male mode also then a simple style, a gold ball or small stone. Have it done really it is not a big deal.

Don't know. I actually have not gotten my ears pierced (yet). I have two in my lips, and have had my labret done twice. Last time though is when I got my second lip piercing and the swelling from all three being done at the same time was so bad that it caused the labrets to go into my skin and the skin was healing over them. I might go get them back in again. As for multiple, the places I go to will do them. As for numbing, they don't. They don't do it for tattoos, branding, or scarifications either. But really I don't imagine your ears will hurt that much. Probably not much worse than a shot or getting your finger pricked for blood work.

Damn! Getting my finger

Ever been pinched??
It's no worse than that. They use a gun (at Piercing Pagoda) and load a "starter" earring that you pick from a group. It shoots the earring in in a second and it's over. It installs the back at the same time.
Go for it...feels so good to wear comfy earrings and not those darn ear pinching clip-ons.

I further that you should go for it. Decorating your body can not only make you feel good about yourself, it's a form of art, and it's addictive.
I am a HUGE sissy too...
When I had mine done last year I went to Clares in the mall, and had to wait in line behind a 6 or 7 year old girl getting hers done. The girl got a HUGE lecture from her mother about how she was not allowed to make a peep about it hurting because this was what the girl wanted! And the girl made not a peep. Which made me feel really great when it came to my turn and I yelled "Ouch!" But to be fair, my mother wasn't there threatening me with immediate and irrevocable death if I made a noise. Also, they let you hold a teddy-bear if you need it.
Don't believe anyone who says it doesn't hurt. They think they are doing you a favor, telling you it won't hurt, so you won't be afraid. The truth is, it does hurt. But it is not bad. It is about like getting pinched in the ear lobe. It hurts for a second or two, a sharp stab just as the starter goes in, and then it's all over. It is totally worth it.
Don't let a second of pain keep you from a lifetime of joy.

Hope,
I as so excited to read your story only to turn "pale" and light-headed when you screamed at the top of your lungs "Ouch!" Did the Mall Security rush to Clares in their robo-mobile device to see if there was an emgergency?
Was the little girl who proceeded you still in the store? Did she bust her gut in hysteria?
Seriously, I am still affraid and would feel better if they were able to do two at the exact same moment. But having to go through it once then knowing how it hurt the antipation of the second hole would be overwhelming.
I guess there is no "painless" answer. Being a pain wuss (I break out in a cold flush, shake like a leaf in the wind, and get dizzy as well as my blood pressure ringing the "damger" bell when I have to have blood drawn), I will have to do something to prep myself. Are you charged extra if the squeeze the life out of the teddy bear?
Maybe a stiff drink, a pain pill, & squeeze the crap out of my ear lobes immediately prior!
I would like to have it BEFORE X-Mas. Maybe December 24th (lol). Chicken Traci is going to postpone as long as possible. But I have already asked my wife for pierced earrings for a X-Mas gift. So I can't back out now...or can I?

Any pain you feel will be instantaneous and over as soon as the deed is done. I recall, despite my anticipatory trepidation, that I only felt a sensation no more significant than a moderate pinch. I also went to a tattoo/piercing salon which meant I had a pro with a healthy-sized needle rather than a teenager of questionable experience wielding a gun.

The pain is minimal, and the worst is over after just a few short seconds. Now getting a meaty part of your body pierced, that is another story. That does hurt.
But just before they pierce you, take a few deep breathes in and out, put your focus out there, keep taking steady deep breathes, and then they're done.
Oh and make sure you see them set up. If you go to a Claire or mall kiosk for this do not take for granted they are trained, know what they are doing, and sanitation is not a concern. At least make them let you see them take the needle out of a sterilized packed. That can't be stressed enough. And if you are getting your piercings from a good piercer, they will set set up, wash their hands, and take the needle out in front of you without you having to request it. And if you go to a tattoo/piercing parlor they will be certified to do piercings, and their certifications should be on display. And you'll probably have a better selection of jewelry to choose from.
I also went to a tattoo/piercing salon which meant I had a pro with a healthy-sized needle rather than a teenager of questionable experience wielding a gun.
Come to think about it I don't think people at such places are licensed. Ears I'm sure a very routine thing, but the piercing might not heal that well if it's done wrong. When I was very young my mom worked for a Claires type of place called Canary and the Elephant, and she was doing ear piercings without a license.

I visited a traditional old jeweller. Not a doctor or these new fangled peircing shops. My jeweller used pure silver wire. Sharpened an end, and pierced my ear. I heard the flesh split open in a crrrrreeek. I was so thrilled because I had never heard flesh split open. It hurt a little. But the pain as it healed was bad... but not overly.

I have two holes in each ear and they were all done in the same sitting. As everyone has said, a little pinch and it is all over. Just be sure to keep them clean and keep your hands away from them. I know you can do it! Just imagine all thoes lovely ear rings you will be able to wear!!!!!

Don't squeeze your ears before you go in! Blood will rush to the area and they'll become extra-sensitive.

Oh, and it definitely hurts less than pricking your finger. ;) Fingertips are full of nerve endings, whereas earlobes aren't so much.

Its really not a big deal just make up you are going to do it and follow thru I promise you will be happy you did. I enjoy my double ear piercings whenever I see them or feel the rings move in thier holes and clank together....keep them clean and don't touch them with your bare fingers even if you are tempted.

I had mine done at a piercing/tattoo shop last year. And yes it hurt. But it was not for very long. From what I've heard from others, especially if you're not too fond of pain, then you should go to the places in the mall that do it. Good luck! (PS - I got mine done before Christmas last year too! Kind of as a Merry Christmas to me! hehehe

If you are getting earrings for Xmas, you really want to be getting your piercing done as soon as possible. The general recommendations vary from 6 to 10 weeks between the peircing and putting in your first pair of proper earrings. For me it was 12 weeks because I have diabetes.
I went to a piercing parlour and they cleansed my lobes with alcohol before doing the piercing (which numbs them slightly). It hurt me less than when I have an innoculation or when I have my blood checked by having a finger pricked.

I'm terrified of injections, but ear piercing, it's nothing really. It's a bit like someone flicking your ear really hard. You'll wonder why you even bothered getting worked up about it.
Nipple piercing is another matter, ouch!

No no no!
If you're going to get your ears-or anything else-pierced, do it right. Find a good piercing salon-you'll thank me for this. Why? Because they use actual needles, rather than the piercing guns Claire's and the other mall places do. Needles hurt a lot less, are far more sterile and you'll heal faster. A good piercer will make sure everything is sterile, that you now how to care for your piercings, and has a far better choice of rings.
I paid to have mine done by one of the best salons (Rings of Desire, New Orleans, R.I.P.), and it was worth it. The holes are still in great shape, even though I don't wear earrings in them all the time.
I as so excited to read your story only to turn "pale" and light-headed when you screamed at the top of your lungs "Ouch!"
Oh don't worry about me - I squeal at everything. I had to have blood drawn a few months ago and worked myself into a tizzy for the 3 days before hand. And you know what? The guy who did my blood draw was a BOSS. He leaned back like he was about to pitch a baseball, and before I knew what was going on, the needle was in and he was getting my blood and I didn't feel a thing other than startled... Oh - I still squealed though. I was "in drab" It was really manly.
Seriously, go to Clairs, get them done, do it tomorrow and have it over with. Don't make your self twist in the wind any longer. The anticipation is 1000 times worse than the actual piercing. The actual piercing only hurts for a second... it is WAY less painful than any finger prick I have ever had.

I'm the biggest wimp in the world. I cry at electrolysis. I cry when I stub my toe. I've had my ears pierced in a mall, and by a friend with a nothing but a post and some hydrogen peroxide. I whimpered a bit for the latter, but it's over fast, and fairly trauma-free. Don't stress it. it's really not a big deal at all.
Hugs,
Melissa:)

My usual piercer (at a professional studio and using a neeedle) makes all her clients take three deep breaths in and out, and pushes the needle through on the third exhale.
Except that she doesn't, actually -- that's only what she tells you she's going to do. In reality, she pierces on the second exhale, so you don't exactly know when it's coming. The pain really is more bearable if you don't anticipate exactly when it will happen.
Of course, this only works the first time or two for each client, until they figure out the routine. :)
Plain earlobe piercings really are close enough to pain-free that you should just get it done and not think about it in advance very much.
