I've got to wonder...what really are the rules when applying for a part-time job and for your girl-self?

I'm kind of in the market for a new job. I'm going to need some part time work starting around mid-November, unless I find another better paying full-time job either as my "normal" self or "Cindy" before then.

Especially if you are in the DC area and have any recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not in your area but your best bet is probably to be honest about it (don't pretend you won't CD on the job if you intend to, don't claim to be transitioning if you are not, etc) at every stage of the hiring process. If you don't make it clear and just show up en femme for work one day it probably won't sit well. That said I've never heard of anyone who can't pass/isn't transitioning getting hired en femme in my area, technically it's illegal for employers to discriminate but they can easily find other reasons not to hire you. Additionally it's not illegal to have gendered uniform requirements which often rules out any possibility for non-transitioning cds on the job. Sadly we live in a world where even cding off work can get one in employment trouble - http://www.genderadvocates.org/Miranda%20Writes/M0209Crossdressers.html I'm not trying to be discouraging, I know some people have people have done it (including some of our forum members), and your area may well be a better one. Good luck in your struggle, and kudos for having the courage to even attempt it.

I don't know how it'll work in today's era, but back in the mid to late 80s I worked for a record store chain and although I was presenting as male I did wear makeup, have long hair, even had pink streaks in it at one time, had both ears pierced and sometimes wore feminine clothing such as white fringed leather jacket, hot pink jeans, bright and frilly scarfs, lots of jewelry, etc.. (Think Hanoi Rocks, Poison, Cinderella, etc)

Maybe you could work at a record store.

You could also check your local LGBT clubs and see if any of them need a coat check, bartender, server, host/hostess, other, etc

You first issue ought to be if you are applying as a woman or a man. If a woman and you still have a legal male name and a "M" marker on your Soical Security, then you need to come clean with your prospective employer. Else face some serious problems.

Maybe you could work at a record store.

Is there even such a thing as a record store anymore?

Being a business owner I can tell you if you have not legally changed your name and had your ID changed to F you need to inform your prospective employer. From what I have seen as long as you dress in a manner that reflects well for the business and reasonably pass as a woman, you should get hired as long as you meet the job requirements.
