Congrats Angel ! :cheer:
Living in ma, I know the routine you have to go through, which is slightly different than other states...like doing your SS 1st & wait for your new card before you can amend your DL..you may see it (SS card) in 7 days hopefully, then off to our wonderful DMV....lol Good luck there..

Yeah, I have the form already filed out for my license changes, and I noted that it said 'bring current identification, name change order, and SS card' I was like.. ahhh.. grasshoppah. It just made sense, and at least the SS card change is freeeeeee.. just about everything else costs $$. Bleck.

LOL... Yup !
It took me through me a loop too when I did mine...I was like wtf ! lol
You will be asked to surrender your current license right there on the spot & they give you a temp till they mail the new one...Yup, another 7-10 wait for the mail...lol
The good news it will only cost you $25 for the amended DL...so not too awfully bad...
Just don't forget to bring that gender marker change form signed off the therapist...
Funny thing when I did mine, I went up to the counter & said I need to amend my license, he's like oh really Mam, what exactly do you need to change?
I was like Oh lets see, Hmm, My address , My name, My height, My picture, and ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMy Gender........
He was like WOW , You certainly do have Lots of changes then !!!.... I just giggled & said, ..Yeah. I guess I do at that....LOL

I just received my Social Security card in the mail now, so I'm super stoked!! It's off to have my license redone on Friday morning, gender marker and all, if I can find the form that my therapist signed for me. ;-) I already have the name-change part completed. I informed my work that I'd be an hour late for work for an appointment that I'll be going to at 9am.. for which I'll have some of the morning to pick out my outfit, fix my hair, and set my makeup lightly in place.. and then the piccie will be done, and my new license will be on it's way!!! **YAAY**
Also, it donned on me, that I need to redo my registration too.. but first I guess I have to go to my insurance company and change my data there.. to then go BACK to the DMV and do the reg change.. in that order... oyi. Once I get my license, at least I can then do most of the other things all at once.. credit card, utilities, etc. etal.. and meanwhile reapply for my passport too. Sooooo much to do!
Hey, which reminds me, anyone have experience changing their name on a Californian birth certificate?

I'm happy for you Angel....:hugs:
You matters well do the name change on your registration while your there...think it's another $25....they make out like bandits with us changing stuff....lol
Then let your insurance agent know to change the name on the policy..
PS, I hated my DL picture.., the guy said everyone hates the pictures we take here...lol
So hopefully you have better luck...
PS. PS...If you could, while your there, ask them how much to amend Auto/Boat Titles....that's one thing I haven't changed yet...actually, I have 3 that need to be changed....oops...lol
Good luck Friday !

Well then! Seems like this thread jumped forward a month in time, as it's now January 3rd, 2011, and TO-FREAKIN-DAY is my first day of work on 'The Job' as my true self!!!!!!!!1111!!1!!!1!!
All the name change-over stuff went off without a hitch, BTW. The day I went into the RMV office, I had my fees in hand, and it went generally smooth. Actually, the picture I have on my license is pretty darn good if I do say so myself. A little redness under the eyelid, but otherwise a very presentable picture. I had my letter with my gender change request also ready that same day, so processing both the name and the gender marker change was very smooth. My only complaint? The woman at the RMV, processing my paperwork, sees me there in front of her dressed, I give her a handful of paperwork to change my gender, and in the end called over to another woman (across the room 1/2 of of people) and said 'Hey! Can you help HIM out, HE needs a new copy of HIS registration.' Doh. So much for a perfect experience.
Took about 8 days to get my new license. Brought that in the next day to the office, and started changing over internal paperwork. Went to the bank, changed over my records there.. then called EVERY-Freakin-BODY else and did the same thing over and over until they were all done. I kid you not, I have a file folder here with pre-photocopied packets of Cover letters, fax sheets, licenses, decree, and anything else I thought I might need. In the end I probably changed over a dozen or so things in about a month's time. New Bank cards, credit cards, license, insurance, etc. and so on. Even, as I was leaving for my Vacation/Transition turnover before XMass, I contacted the local CLEO about changing the name and pic on my LTC. From what he said to me on the phone, I'll be his first-ever Transwoman to request such a change, as he's going to call the state and figure out what precisely needs to be done to execute said request.
The only things I didn't change over immediately were my doctor's information, though I did change my prescriptions. My Health insurance will change over in the New Year when I start my job full time as Angel, so I want to make sure there's little conflict.
As long as my employment stays solid, as of today I am gainfully employed and have transitioned on the job. Here's to staying strong through the long haul! :drink:

Uhh.. well.. at some points it was actually entertaining, when the people I was/were talking to were actually as enthusiastic as I was trying to be from time to time. At least two of the calls were so dry and, actually, in reviewing everything, I may have to contact them again, as I'm getting 'Mr.'s' on one or two of them.. Mr. Angel.. yeah, okay... not.

Mr. Angel.. yeah, okay... not.Yeah, I had a couple of "Mr. Faith" letters too, and it took some arguing to get it changed. Why the hell would the elctric company care what my gender is? Health insurance rewarded my insistence on being female with a 20% rate hike. Gee, thanks...

Why did you need a new SS Card when you're the same person M or F? Will your SS work contributions history change?

When my name and gender marker changed I got a new Social Security card because the one I had was wrong. My new one has my correct name and my gender is correct. It did not change anything with my contribution history

Not quite sure who you're talking to, but since I had a legal name change, I needed to tie that to my SS #, which meant new card. Downside was that they are generally sticklers for having the post-op letter in hand to change the gender. Ooooooh well.

Angel, a letter from my Endo with the wording used by the State Dept. for passport changes ("has had appropriate clinical treatment for gender transition") worked just fine at the SSA (and for my BC in NJ). Doesn't hurt to try it. :)
Kate, the reason you have to change your gender marker with the SSA even though it's not on your card is because the information employers see does show your gender.
