so i am looking for a wig place that is fairly trans friendly in the Austin area. Houston would be okay too seeing as i kinda live in between. My Therapist wants me to get out and see what it is like to be female in public but unfortunately i was stricken with the curse of hair loss at the ripe ole age of 17 and now at 22 have very little at all left on top, so no natural hair for me.

im not looking for an amazing "cant believe its not yours" piece, just something that would be presentable for an afternoon. but seeing as i will have to go as a guy looking at womens wigs, i would like a place that is fairly use to trans people coming in or open about it.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?:D

also any other general wig tips would be greatly appreciated.

Unless they are specificly for medical, they all are. We are one of their biggest customer bases. You should be able to get a nice synthetic wig for $20-40 or so. And most places that I've shopped at, want you to look great, so you will come back again.. AAlso, don't be afraid of going in guy mode, most have private areas to use....Billijo

I have just had a place recommended to me recently. I've dropped a new wig off there to have it trimmed but have not yet seen the results (IE - how good are they at trimming it). What I CAN tell you is that the owner (Bonnie) came highly recommended to me by another TG here. I have now met Bonnie and think she rocks - I like her personally, so now it's just a question of finding out for myself how good she is professionally. By the way, I've met her as both Matt and Kim and she is most definitely cool with TG's. Please tell her that Kim (Matt) sent ya!

Jon Davis (Beth) is a TG in the Austin area who is a professional image consultant and owns her own salon. She also sells wigs but hers are the expensive "cant believe its not yours" variety.

This pic was taken with a wig I purchased there and right after a makeover at the same place.

I was thrilled but it DID set me back a bit financially

You don't really need a "TG friendly" wig place. They all are.

If you really want a good place in Austin, try Pat Painter's. Her shop is on Burnet Rd just north of the intersection with with Koenig Ln (this road changes names but I believe it is Koenig at Burnet). The shop can arrange a time for a more private fitting. It seems like the busiest time is Saturday so a week day might be best if you just need to go in without any arrangements. Most wig shops are TG/TS friendly, but not all will make arrangements for a more private session. They also do this for cancer patients who might need more privacy.

OK, just got my new hair trimmed at "Top This" in Austin Texas:

My request to her was to make the new wig look like my favorite and I think she did a bang up job.
Here is the old wig:

Here is the one she just trimmed to look like it:

In other words, I think that she did a great job! She was also very flexible with making time to take care of me, as my travel schedule can make getting an appointment a tough deal for me.
Oh, I was wrong - Bonnie is not the owner, she is the manager. I have now met the woman several times and I think she is neat as hell. You could do far worse than to give her a call.

PS - I think you may have already called her. She mentioned this morning that someone called her and told her they got her name from a post on the internet. Be sure to tell her I sent ya would ya'? It's not gonna get me anything or any brownie points, but I want her to know that we TG's notice when someone does well by us and that we will return the good turn by spreading the news for her.

Showbiz type places and costume places both have wigs. I (OK this is a secret!) buy wigs every halloween at Walmart or Kroger/Smith's groc. I have some that look great that I paid $5 to $10 for. I love wearing my purple wigs, one long and one short pageboy type. I normally wear a short red wig that I have 2 different ones of, and people think its my real hair. No one has noticed when I change from one to the other. I call one my Orphan Annie wig and the other one has wrap around my face front hair, both have bangs. In fact ALL my wigs have bangs. I am 75 transitioned at 72 and began wearing wigs 7 years before because I couldn't stand being bald/
(Duhh, wonder why!)

Merle Norman salons are very TG friendly if you have one in the area. They have wigs and will also work with you on makeup. I've had a makeup lesson there and went there in male mode.
