View Full Version : Heckler while I'm on stage: "You look like a woman!"

So, There was a private viewing of a film at this comedy club that I often perform at, doors opened at 7:30. from 8:30 to 9:00 they showed the movie. After that 1 hour of comedy is scheduled, and I am one of the comedians. 9:30 the show starts.

For the entire time they've been drinking for free. So the audience, by the time I get up is distracted and rowdy. I did this as a male and not as Violet, so my opening is different. As start by asking the audience, "Do I look like a criminal?" they say "no." then I used that to set up a punchline. This time however, a particularly rowdy table has a woman who shouts out, "NO, YOU LOOK LIKE A WOMAN!" Later, I mention how a woman who saw me on the street walked hurriedly away while clutching her purse. The same woman shouts "You should have hit her with YOURS!"

So I think Violet is starting to bleed through more and more. In at some point in the Pics section I'm going to post a pic of me as male that I thought looked kinda... well, I'm putting in the pics section of crossdressers.com, let's put it that way! Then you call can judge for yourselves!

That is interesting. I did a bit of (amateur!) stand up myself while not in one ofmy femme modes, but I've been thinking of trying out something as a girl

I guarantee she would not be talking crap if she were alone on the streets and saw something she didn't agree with.
If you are glad to be perceived as a woman then it isn't bad but what if a non-TG who looked kind of femme was up there?

As I have mentioned before, some of the most oppressive people are those that have been oppressed.

Tough job. But somebody's got to do it. Glad it isn't me.

Nearest I ever got to stand up was playing a Pantomime Dame at a local drama group. Good excuse to get dressed though. And no-one expected me to pass.

The thing about hecklers is they will use any handle they can get hold of to make some comment, but it's something you have to deal with. I did do comedy in Second Life as female which was fun

not to bust your bubble, but I think it was just a random jab to throw you off of your game. If you were not Violet you would of just brushed it off.

In my experience with hecklers, I've not found this to be the case. People think that hecklers just show up and decide to be jerks, to ruin the show. Heckler mentality isn't quite that simple. See, the tickets cost $20 each at this show, and no one pays that to go to a show that they intend to ruin.

But what happens is, when the booze starts flowing freely some people get this very loud sort of stream of consciousness thing going. This is coupled with the alchohol's ability to strip people of their inhibitions and makes them feel as though there's nothing wrong with becoming part of the show and grabbing the attention for themselves. So it's not usually like they want to comic to perform badly, it's just that they want attention, but because they are drunk they are often inconsiderate of the fact that the rest of the audience came to the hear the comic, not them.

And trust me, I've heard 7+ years of people yelling stuff out, and "You look like a woman" is not on the list of random heckles. If I were not Violet and someone yelled that out, I'd probably go home a bit self-conscious that I must look like a girl. Non-cd's HATE that! lol

Hindsight being 20/20, a couple of possible responses:
"Thank you, thank you very much" ( Elvis impression)
"You don't. Is that your real face, or did you borrow it from Buddy Hackett?" (This one depends on the size & pugnacity of her and her escort[s]and your ability to defend yourself [a mic stand is a pretty effective weapo if you know how to use it.])
And yes, I've spent some time on stage, although in a different capacity, and have had to deal with this kind of thing on occasion.

Good one.

Of course, lots of folks these days don't know who Buddy Hackett is so you might have to use a different example.

Violet -- I assume that you didn't invite her to attend a show when Violet would be up on stage. She'd have to come up with a new line. When I see your pic, I will then pass judgement on her heckling.

I'd take it as a compliment.... Maybe incorporate it into future shows.... Segwaying for an all male act to a gender bending act? At the publics request!

She sounds like a proper lady. You should have responded with," I'm more of a woman than you'll ever be".

Interesting crowd. Are you sure she does not know Violet?

Violet, is it possible that she's seen you there before as Violet and she put two and two together when you were onstage?

I agree with you on your assessment of hecklers, though I do think there is some merit in the suggestion that people do want to throw the comic off of their game, though the mentality isn't so much "I want to ruin the show," as much as it is rooted in some deep insecurity and a subconscious desire on the part of that audience member to not only be a part of the show, but actually have the majority of the room's attention fall on them. I think some hecklers, especially when drunk, feel like they have really accomplished something if they think they can one up the comic.

Not sure how to reply because I many ways I have heard this kind of thing before. I have found that many CD and TS girls before they are full time. Start to appear more and more feminine. The more you dress and the more you pass. The more we do to make ourselves more feminine. Some woman pick up on that and in this case maybe the drinking opened her up to say something when she normally would not. Just a thought.

Jealousy, she is obviously very jealous that you look good as male and female and wanted to shout it out loud.

If you wanted to stop her cold: "well one of us should"

As an expert in alcohol ( so much so that I gave it up years ago ), this is correct.
