So as I read post I frequently look and read people's profiles, and I'm started to notice a trend. It seems that a great majority of you femmes are in the art field or art related careers. Things like design, architect, artist and so on.
So is this a common thread that seems to binds us? I'd really like to know what fields(jobs) people have. Maybe I'm way off base here but it certainly seems this way. Please post here what job you have, both art related or not.
Thanks
Thank you everyone for the responses. Although, after reading these posts I've come to some conclusions. First and foremost, I think that Maslow's theory applies here. Something about basic needs being met before finding true inner self. I think that's why so many here are retired or in their careers, and few of us that are college bound.
Secondly, I think the common thread between all of us is careers in complex problem solving. The majority, if not all, of the jobs listed are occupations which require us to solve a problems using advanced reasoning or a higher brain functions.
None of the jobs listed seem to be in fields where you do a mindless repetitive task 24/7. And even the ones that did seem to have a creative outlet that must be met.
Is the conclusion here that maybe crossdressing is the result of more areas of the brain functioning?
The other thing that noticed throughout this forum is the lack of crappy spelling, jive talk, and just uneducated speech (which I'm so thankful for). I think this adds the conclusion I came to above.

I dont think so, unless figuring out how to house a couple hundred homeless people is an art. Some people would probably say it is. I do a message in the Chapel once or twice a month- if writing those messages is an art, I guess that counts.

I have a degree in Applied Sciences in Automotive Technologies. I am an automotive technician, with several awards from several automotive manufacuters. Not much art work as I see it.
I am a very logical, technical, scientific person. However, my dad has a Masters degree in fine art.
My self interpretation is that the dominant left side of my brain is male, and the recessive right side of my brain is female. In general, the left side is logical and the right side is artistic. The theory is that men think more in the dominant left side, and women are more balanced because the left/right brain connection is physically bigger.
I find it useful to approach life with the idea that the dominant, male left side tends to neglect the recessive female right side. Some times I think something is too right-brain oriented to be enjoyable, like fine art or "chic flicks". But, when I experience them it makes me feel good, even though my logical side does not really understand.
Maybe that all sounds weird, but perhaps the left/right division is real, and maybe even not that uncommon in those of us who tend to develop a different personality while en femme. Maybe we are learning to let our right brain take the wheel for a while.

I am as far from "creative" as one can be. Warehouseman ,mostly. Right now a "laborer" is the job title. A 2 time College drop out. I used up most of my time trying to prove I was a man. Joined the Army out of high school.
I have a degree in Dental Medicine. There is much art in dentistry. Many pople do not understand that a dentist must treat them medically and with art. A smile is a beautiful (bite of) art. I practice in Alaska and North Carolina. Soon it will become, a 2 month each place, commute.
We must ALL be proud of who we are and try to understand ourselves. As I aged (67), next Tuesday, I got tired of the SECRET. Age helps. I have never had a really bad comment about Cd when I choose to tell someone.
We should all educate and inform. We must not be ashamed of who we are. ONLY THEN, WILL WE GAIN ACCEPTANCE!

I have two occupations:
Most of the time I work for the phone company install/repair resident/business phone and DSL (15 yrs). Sometimes the phone company lets me leave and I go do my previous job in radiation protection at commerical nuclear power plants (been working in that field since the Navy.... so 30 yrs).
There used be some art work in the drawing of survey maps for those unique items that no one bothers making copies of but now all the maps are on computer.
Running phone jacks in peoples houses can be kind of fun. The different ways you can run the wire and make it look nice.
I do like to draw and can't sit at a table without picking up a pen and paper and just drawing whatever I feel like. I once drew houses for a catalog but that seemed liked too much work and not enough enjoyment.

It is often said that we have a higher percentage of scientists, engineers, technical people etc. than the general population, and in my experience I have found this to be true. Why I am not sure... maybe a desire to make sense of the world given the chaos around us? Who knows. I have a BS degree in computer science and was a software engineer for a couple years out of college until my job was outsourced (*grumble!*) and I ended up transitioning to being a PC technician and doing tech support. Later on I found myself in electrology. These are all technically, well, technical in nature, but are certainly part science and part art.

I have never been very artistic - except for food presentation.
For about 35 years I worked in IT moving up from Trainee Programer through Analyst and Project leader to Systems Analyst and Data Base designer then on to Business Analysis.
For the last few years I have been in a role that combines my passion for excellence in Customer Service with PC Support. The nearest I come to being artistic with that is in the way that I present bad news to my customers :heehee:

I drive a tow truck and last week i got a call from one of the local shops to remove a truck from a lift in the shop that was hanging from the right front tire about 9 feet off the ground while the left rear tire was on the floor. it took two trucks to lift the whole truck off of the floor and move the lift, then lower the truck to the floor in one piece. They said it was a work of art to watch me do it, so i guess that makes me an artist.

one post mentioned that it seems like the community is a higher percentage of science / tech people, and while our community (the forum) does seem this way, I think that this being an internet forum skews the results as to how they would apply to the CD/TG community at large. I'm not sure that you can draw to much about the larger community from the sample we have here.
Still it is very interesting to see all the jobs that we are doing! from tow truck driver to bank directors!

Good ol' fashioned blue collar laborer here. Spent most of my work life as a lumber mill worker, at least till the tree huggers and economy have reduced the jobs to nothing. I must agree with you about art.
Myself: Main profession for years was as a software consultant, but have had to switch to blue collar running a waterjet machines. But, I worked as a technical director in live theater for 25 years (volunteer work for non-profits); owned a tv production company and did videography and directed multi-camera for tv; owned a record label and produced about 30 CDs carried by an international distributor; composed music for full orchestra and smaller.
My dad, also a crossdresser: Best known as a photographer for most major publications in the world including Time, Life, National Geographic, Stern, many newspapers, and so on. Later in life he learned to fly and became a commercial pilot, then worked in industrial equipment sales then finally ran a bookstore.
My son, also with crossdresser leanings: Incredible artist, done publishable anime style work, played violin, but to survive works in a hardware store selling paint, while at the same time in the National Guard as a truck driver.
So, for me art and design is my passion but I do other things to survive. I feel that engineering is very creative work, and also qualifies as a form of art, because for me, when I'm doing something like heavy coding, or writing help info all day long, I have no creativity left for music at the end of the day. So, to me those of you that say you do engineering, I think you have a combination of both left and right brain functions working together in harmony.
Hugs,
Ann

I'm a Structural engineer. I like to think I'm somewhat creative. Some of the non-standard structures I have to design are VERY creative (for stuctures). Most of that creativity stems from necessity (like it just won't fit any other way) and other creativity is just because. I learned early on that I have many "creative" ideas. Usually most ideas die in the brain filter saying "if I say that, I'll get laughed out of the office", but sometimes I try to present these ideas as "out of the box" thinking.
I also like to build things out of wood. Unfortunately, there is only a small amount of creativity but still some.

Nope, not me. My work has nothing what so ever to do with art, architecture or artistic design. I must be in the minority. I am involved in a Mechanical engineering industry with qualifications in Science and a number of post trade qualifications involving mechanics across a number of areas like marine, forestry, agricultural and construction.
My hobbies are 3D art, graphics and virtual worlds with respect to content building and envy those who are employed within these industries. However I guess that the thought of doing art as a career and working within a time frame does not appeal to me at all.

I agree. What we see here are the fields of CDs who tend to be on-line enough to want to spend time on a forum. We would have to compare that to non-CDs that are on-line enough to spend time on a forum. Quite different than just comparing to everyone everywhere. But the point is that it is fun to see that we are from all slices of life. Pretty normal, aren't we?
And on the artistic note, I am no where close. I can't draw a straight line with a ruler. Maybe that is why I am a minimalist when it comes to make-up. My job is an engineer working on communications systems.

Your electic bill must be HIGH!
Is the conclusion here that maybe crossdressing is the result of more areas of the brain functioning?
Could be, I for one do have an exceptional high IQ.
I by the way am a software developer with my own company.

I am an attorney now, but I started out as a computer geek (building 'em to programming 'em). Computers are OK, but not diverse enough to stimulate my mind. I love to sing and act, when I get the chance, which is seldom, unfortunately. I sew on occassion, but it isn't a "femme" thing... it's more of a project to tackle that keeps me engaged.

Nope, I think the majority of CDs seem to be from fairly technical backgrounds.
I would change just one word in the above sentence - "technical" would become "diverse".

My great uncle is a mural artist. My grandmother was an oil painter and interior designer. My mom was an interior decorator and sketch artist. My cousin owns an art gallery. Her daughter (my cousin) is a glass blowing artist. In the late 80’s I owned a stained glass art studio for many years, then started a “stained glass” lamp manufacturing company ( “tiffany lamps for lighting stores). I have an art studio in the bottom level of my house. I am just beginning my next creative project…making a life sized human figure out of 100% platinum cure silicone! All members of my “family” have been serious art collectors for many years. Oh, and I can also write my name in yellow letters in the snow… :D
I've never called anything I do a "job". I just call it "making money".
In the corporate world, I was a “start-up/turn-around “specialist”. (Start new divisions for big companies…save the smaller ones from financial failure.) Also was heavily vested in IRL racing for a few years (team owner).
Last 15+ years I am self employed. Specialized security/personal protection consulting to confidential clients…start up companies of my own, sell antiques & fine art I collect, and wander around parking lots looking for pennies…you know…the usual stuff…:)

I am a firefighter/emt and work at a hardware store..... I guess not very fem jobs but I do love them
Me too except substitute the hardware store part for the military. A fire house is very close quarters so doing something femme (like shaving full time) would warrant attention I don't need. There's been several threads about this over the years I've been on and I've never answered until now.

I agree with two of Briana's points. I'm new here but I have already been impressed by the generally high level of literacy compared to most of the other fora that I have sampled (on a whole range of subjects). Second, I have also often wondered if we get to access more areas of our brain - not necessarily through any superior intellect but maybe by remaining open to a wider range of possibilities.

It would seem that safest career in the cding profession would be a clerk at a cd/Tg shop. Check out janetscloset. Better yet probably open one of your own and I'll work for you.

Something else I've noticed about this thread in particular is the fact that people that I've never seen post before are speaking up. That's so great. Sometimes I think that there are only a few people here that actually participate in discussions and I very happy that everyone's involved in this. Kudos to everyone. :)

Well Briana90802, congratulations to posting a topic that is receiving so many interesting replies and thought provoking in reading. Isn't it amazing to see how we all have a common interest and if we sit back and look past the crossdressing issue, we all are artistic and create despite our varied careers. Topics like this help us to understand who we are and maybe why we do crossdress, thank you for a very good topic, so simple yet complex.

Software Engineer.
My comment on the thread would be that we see what we are looking for. For an artist, the arty replies grab your attention and seem to dominate, for the technical the technical jobs grab your attention and seem to be more common. Also, to some degree it's a leading question, so jobs that are not particularly arty are bent towards artiness, or the primary day job is dismissed quickly and a list of hobbies added to fit the profile.
Interesting question though, and for me the summary seems to be - it takes all sorts.
Susie.

Briana90802, I don't think it means that all cd's are artistic, although I've spent a lifetime as a musician. A lot I've noticed are engineers.
poor me i am just a heavy haul highway operational engineer.

Electrical engineer by degree, but I mostly do software and digital hardware engineering. I guess I consider myself more artistic than average engineers; I have some sense of style and color.

I'm new to this Forum.
In my opinion, as a retired 75 year old, in looking at people's job situation, one should also consider the age group and the job opportunities available when the individuals were choosing (or being given) a job.
To me it appears that most CD's have selected (when they were allowed to select) a job which allowed some self-expression and advancement to the fullest of their ability.
I'm of course retired - for many years - but I began with a BSc and went into the construction industry, then took a Diploma in Management, and later took a Diploma in Education and became a lecturer.
All this indicates is a deep curiosity and need to know - which many CD's exhibit and which I think is the common thread.
I'm open to your comments!

No my dear, you are not all alone :D. I would have posted earlier but I am involved in a very big account right now and have not had the time to post much lately. I own an Architectural Design and Construction company.
As for art I am a woodturner doing mostly segmented turning, hollow forms, bowls and platters.

I'm a Johnson/Evinrude/Mercury outboard and Mercruiser sterndrive and inboard certified master technician. The only "art" that comes with this is having to learn to run their respective computer diagnostic programs, and being able to keep up with the constant change of them.

I own an online auction site, and in my spare time, i'm a photographer and mixed media artist. The worst part of this combination, is that i get about 4.5 to 5 hours of sleep a night.
I am as far from "creative" as one can be. Warehouseman ,mostly. Right now a "laborer" is the job title. A 2 time College drop out. I used up most of my time trying to prove I was a man. Joined the Army out of high school.
I'm not sure i understand
You are 26....just beginning! I was 37 when I started dental School. Next time you go to college....do the work...what have you go to loose?
PS I know I'm gonna catch H..l for this....THERE ARE NO FAILURES...ONLY QUITTERS!
great advice!
