There one business that is often a very good fit for people like us. Sometimes they can be real shitty and some of the places are pretty decent.
I'm talking about call centers. Most of them have quite high turnover and in this industry they still need people. The work can be quite stressful and not everyone can do it. I am not talking about telemarketing but customer service for like cell phone companies and banks. These call centers are all over the country and are usually outsourced. (you don't work for say Sprint itself) They are also usually VERY POLITICALLY CORRECT in their hiring. I probably would not go through usual channels though. I would make every effort to talk to someone in HR personally email or even snail mail can be very effective in getting in to talk to the person if you know his or her name. I would actually use snail mail, explain how you would help their company and maybe provide a small tasteful photo so the person knows they are not hiring Twisted Sister. Make sure to let the person know you are transgendered and are coming to the meeting so.
Talk about a great place to get a whole lot of practice with your femme speaking voice. You just use a gender neutral name on the phone and make the customer guess.
I am very seriously considering doing so. I've got to have my gall bladder out, but I'm hoping that it should be done and most of the pain should be over in a month or so.
These places dont pay really well but not all that badly either and many still offer benefits. They need to. The work can be very stressful and the people really qualified to do the work soon find employment somewhere else.
I'm kind of a special case in that I worked in this one and I know the HR director and I worked there for a couple of years before. I was a good, dependable agent while I worked there and left for serious health issues and the fact that I had a bunch of money in the bank, did not enjoy working there in male mode. I left on good terms. I kind of think I may even be able to get a few very reasonable conditions of my own met because I know they need good agents badly and I have already proven that to be the case.
I hope that in a couple of weeks when I am feeling better I don't let the willies get
to me and I not make the effort. If you don't need eighty grand a year and can stand a bit of stress this may actually be a good opportunity for those who wish to get a chance to work femme.

Best Wishes
Christine

That is a great job suggestion...seems like you have to be very composed with phone manners to pull it off though! lol

Its mostly true. I have worked at 4 different call centers between New Jersey and Georgia, and the only one I know I would have met resistance had I decided to come out was in NJ. However, that was more because one of the managers there was a sexist a--hole and thought he was god's gift to women.
