I have a doctor appointment in a couple weeks and I have been monitoring my blood pressure for a couple of months. It is running in the low 140's over 80's and lo 90's. I know the Dr will talk about blood pressure meds. I thought I read somewhere that some of the HRT meds also lower the blood pressure. I think the one mentioned was a testosterone blocker but I'm not sure and I can't find the article. Does anyone know what it might be. I would like to ask the Dr. to prerscribe it for my blood pressure.

Thanks for any suggestions,
Diana

Hi Diana,

The med is Spironolactone. It is Rx for blood pressure and a testosterone blocker.

My wife takes that drug as a water pill (florasomide)

No, she doesn't. The drug you mention as a "water pill", furosemide (Lasix), is not the same thing as spironolactone. Lasix is a diuretic (what you actually mean when you say "water pill" just as is spiro, but they are different meds and have some significant differences. Both make you pee, which is what a "diuretic" is. That's how they lower your BP, by reducing the fluid volume in your body. But spironolactone, when taken in large enough doses, blocks testosterone receptors in your body. Furosemide (Lasix) does not.

My M.D. told me that they usually don't prescribe spironolactone as an initial blood pressure medicine. According to her, "We use that one with people who have already had their first heart attack."

Also, I believe that the doses for use as a blood pressure medication are much lower than the ones used as a testosterone blocker.
