Today I came out to an old friend. Why is a long story, but she and I have been keeping each others' deep dark secrets for years. So, I'm not worried about her spreading it around.

She asked me if I planned to come out to the rest of our circle and I told her that it wasn't in my plans.

She said "Never say never. In case you ever do plan to come out to the rest, tell me first. Then I can arrange a shower for you. You can register at Nordstrom's!"

It will probably never happen, but isn't that just amazingly lovely? :)

Congratulations! :balloons:

And if you're going to register for a shower, Nordie's is the place -- just sure you ask for lots of shoes. ;)

It just goes to show that if you're going to ome out, do it to people that love you. I'm amazed so far at how the ones I've come out to have reacted. I always thought it'd be a huge mess, but so far no problems. I'm glad you have such a good friend.

Didn't girls used to have coming out parties when they turned sixteen? You could have one.

Damn, sounds like a good plan to me. What a way to come out to friends, eh?

Awwww.....so sweet, Rachel Ann. Congrats on taking this step, and I'm so glad it went well for you. Wouldn't it be great if you did have a coming out shower? Too cool!

Thanks, girls! It didn't take a lot of courage to tell M, though. She's about the most loving and discreet friend I have, and that goes back decades. <3

Didn't girls used to have coming out parties when they turned sixteen? You could have one.Sort of. We have the tradition of the "sweet sixteen" party.

"Coming out" balls used to be held to present daughters of the nobility at the King or Queen's court in England. I can't remember the age for that, seventeen or eighteen? It was supposed to coincide with marriagability.

In Mexico and Central America, and among Mexican-Americans, there is a tradition called the Quinceanera upon a girl's 15th birthday (actually, the day of the Saint for which she was named when she is 15). It's basically the same sort of thing.

But this girl will never be seeing any of those birthdays again. :p Even if I subract the years that I was locked away out of sight, I think I'm still at least 19 or 20 by now. Definitely an old maid. :o

I think that it would be lovely if we had some sort of traditional "coming out" occasion like that. The shower, which I think was M's spontaneous idea, sounds very nice. :) I'm not sure how I feel about "gimme" parties though. Also, it might be difficult for some of us to get our families to attend. :(
