No not clothes silly...

Rather this article (http://jenellerose.com/htmlpostings/darkside/Temperament.htm) (don't worry it's short) that argues cross-dressers typically share the following traits:

Intelligence
Creating and making things
Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism
Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers
Perfectionism
Enjoy flights of fancy
Loners

which the author, a CD herself, argues typically has made CDs feel "different" from others and a bit of an outsider even before they put on the dress.

The bullet list doesn't do justice to the author's points about these traits, so please read the article first before answering the poll.

So what do you think?

.

So what do you think?

Well Darla here's what I think....

Intelligence - well I'm not going to say no that one.

Creativity - I was more creative when I was younger than I am now.

Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism - I can relate to parts of what is said in the article.

Collector/Hobbyist - not really - except useless geographical facts and information and flags of the world - certainly nothing with any great passion.

Perfectionism - I have been a workaholic but I'm too much of a generalist to be a perfectionist.

Imaginative - Yes I go with that.

Loner - absolutely - and self sufficient.

Every catagory decribes my very well accept the loner part. as I relish other peoples company to much and get far to bored if left alone to long.

Well, obviously I didn't vote, but wow.... I read the article and it describes my Tammy down to a T!!! A very insightful article  Tam is intelligent, very creative, has a hobby of creating music, is very much a perfectionist (drives me nuts) and is very much loner :( I'll get her to read it ;)

Here is my outlook:

Intelligence - Above average

Creating and making things - As a HAM operater, I have build electronic devices, used to write game software back when one person could do it , now adays it takes a whole team. Even had a painting hung in a gallery once. I also hold 2 patents.

Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism - Reader of Scientific America, Wired, AMA, QST, and other techincal journials.

Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers - Collect "Pocket Dragons" and Stuff Dragons. Hobbies - Amateur Radio, Computers, N Scale Model Railroading, Private Flying, and Saleboat Racing.

Perfectionism - I like to work solo on a project. Can not stand when boss asks me to stop what I am doing and start another project. Details, details, details are very important to me.

Enjoy flights of fancy - Avided reader of Science Fiction and Mystery Novels. Werid how a lot of OLD SF is now REAL.

Loners - I was shy when I was younger. Family says I was a "Mommy boy", started school at age 5, got bumped a grade, ended up in high school almost 2 years younger and ostrized because of it. Fully believe I have ADD, since I was always bored in school, kept getting into trouble because I would show up the teacher and make them mad. Still ended up with a 4.0 in both high school and college.

WOW, this is strange. I'm taking a training class at work and last night we had a test, to determine our personality traits. Bing, bam, boom, right down the line, I had all the traits that were in this article. The test we took was not by the same person as the article.
 Hi, my name is Billjo, and and and I am a a a CROSSDRESSER. Sniff Sniff There I said it  :)

I haven't voted as this poll is in the MTF forum and I'm FTM, but the description is freakily accurate. I can put a tick against every heading
Suggests that the character traits aren't necessarily gender specific.

(I also do 'keeping things in case they might be useful' thing as well!!)

Fun, isn't it? Thanks, Darla. Here's how I fit ...

Intelligence - I wish! I'm really dumb, but I know it and I'm always trying to overcome it (does that make me intelligent?)
Creating and making things - yep, I draw and paint, and I write and play music. I used to enjoy making models, before my eyesight deteriorated. My current project is to try to make a woman out of an old man, an empty cereal packet and some sticky-backed plastic
Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism - absolutely right there
Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers - hmmm, at bit. But I'm not really into practical things at all. I collect Rupert Bear annuals, though
Perfectionism - absolutely not! I try to do things well, but don't get uptight if I fall short of perfection, and I'm even more forgiving with other people
Enjoy flights of fancy - oh yes, I'm a born dreamer
Loners - I don't think so. I enjoy the company of small numbers of people for a short time, although I am glad of some time to myself. But I don't like the fact that there is no-one special in my life at the moment - I would like to have one special person around all the time.
On that basis, I guess I failed the test. Thing is, if I'm not a crossdresser, what am I going to do with this wardrobe full of clothes and shoes?!!

That's really interesting. Maybe we should put a version up in the FTM forum.

For me it was also freakily accurate.

As far as the loner bit, I suspect that may vary depending on how introverted/extroverted you are. (Introverts recharge by being alone, extroverts recharge by interacting with people.) So if you're really extrovert, you've got a need to be around others -- although I suppose it's possible to simultaneously have loner characteristics, such as having lots of friends, but few really close ones.

Right on the money.......except for the loner part, I can be happy with or without someone.

Stephanie Brooks

I'll say I fit all of it.

I'll also caution that an electronic forum such as this is going to attract individuals who are somewhat aligned with those characteristics. To be an active member of these forums, an individual needs to be capable of using a computer, must be motivated to associate with others in an electronic forum, must be reasonably logical to effectively navigate the forums, and - for those who post pictures - must have some technical proficiency. Generalized, if you're here, you already fit many or all of these to some degree. That's not to say one needs to be a supergeek or super creative to participate, but a person who is computer illiterate or chooses to not use a computer will not be represented here.

It's an interesting thread, but my guess is you'll find transgenderism across the full range of each of those characteristics. You might find more GLBT folks at the upper end of each of the characteristics, but you'll find them at the lower ends too.

Stephanie,

I also thought of selection bias in this case, but of the traits listed:

Intelligence
Creating and making things
Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism
Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers
Perfectionism
Enjoy flights of fancy
Loners

... one needs only a modicum of intelligence and/or curiosity to use a computer and troll forums like this one. For example, not everybody who trolls the Yahoo flirt rooms is creative, ecclectic, a collector, perfectionist, imaginative, or a loner.

This set of attributes also matches other groups of people -- computer geeks and performance artists (actors, musicians) come to mind. Hmm, I wonder if the VP of Information Technology at my bank wears a bra underneath his suit? I doubt it, actually, because he's not very imaginative, and certainly not prone to flights of fancy :).

Hugs,
Susie

PS -- Stephanie, did you notice our avatars have a striking resemblance to each other? Maybe we're distant cousins ;).

Well, I think that those traits would apply to a lot of people, even your "average Joe". (I saw a cartoon the other day that asked the question "Do stupid people know that they're stupid?") :stupid:

What is missing is a balanced evaluation. I might very well have some not so desirable attributes. Why ain't I rich?

Intelligence

Does not describe me. I do tend to ponder or question things in life, why and how it happens. More often than not I get more depressed thinking about it.

Creating and making things

Seems like me, I like drawing, making up my own tunes, and generally making stuff with my hands.

Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism

I'm not so sure what this means, hence why I said I'm not very smart. I am often curious about certain things though.... not that it helps.

Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers

I like to collect things and eventually I have some form of emotional attachment to them. I collect war gaming miniatures or toys.

Perfectionism

There are times where I am very demanding of myself, when I paint my models, I cannot accept a shoddy work from myself, every model has to be done to the best of my abilities, this is also reflected on my written work or stories I do for roleplaying. I would consider the feasibility of the storyline, how logical it was, and continually edit my essay for the usage of correct words used and the effect its meant to carry. Though when it comes to posting on forums, I far more shoddy. :p

Enjoy flights of fancy

Yeah I often wondered about the "WHAT IFs" The possibilities of a UNITED HUMANITY, where we could have progressed if we werent too busy killing each other that and among other nonense... hehe~

Loners

This describes me very accurately, I like to be alone most of the time enjoying the natural silence or the sound of the environment around me. I feel lonely yet strangely very calm. It sounds very strange but its really beautiful sometimes. The tranquility of being alone can sometimes be so surreal.

Amelia Moxon

very close, but I'm not sure about the loner part though (maybe in my mid to late teens but certainly not now). I do love to tinker with stuff, like my nitro monster truck :D

I don't know if you read the article rather than just the bullet points, but the author elaborates on this:

CDs are intrigued by many subjects. They may have a profession that pays the bills, but they tend to dabble, or become interested in, other unrelated subjects. Generally, this interest is passionate, at least for a time. However, they often achieve a degree of mastery or knowledge in one skill or area, become bored or find it not quite as stimulating as before, and move on to explore something new.

Hope this clarifies...

I can see lots i can relate to, but then i know over the years (30 of em!), i have changed a bit too. What used to be important or a part of me has changed, as has my approach and interests towards these fundamental aspects.

Interesting points i can relate too, but convincing for me!

Intelligence- I could be intelligent if I put my mind to it, but I tend to be quite lazy!

Creating and making things- I'm always thinking of new things I think ought to be made, I even occaisionally do something about it! Yep, lazy again... Saying that though, I'm writing a story at the moment, and I create 3D graphics for fun! Not very feminine, but hey!

Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism- If it's one thing that describes me it's this, my parents will always say that I ask the most bizarre questions that no-one else seems to think of. I don't tend to take much for granted!

Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers- Not really my thing

Perfectionism- Hmm, not really... if it's not perfect, but it will do, I will leave it. Laziness...

Enjoy flights of fancy- Hell yeh!

Loners- No, not at all. I enjoy going out with friends to pubs and clubs, I love meeting new people. It also says in the article about competitive sports, and well, I really do like to win, so that doesn't fit.

Interesting topic! Good link!

A very useful and interesting article and a lot of it fits me.

Intelligence

depends what you mean. I do not have that high an IQ, 120 the last time it was tested, and I hate puzzles such as Rubik, Tetris and Su Duko. I do however have a very wide general knowledge and a wide range of experience.

Creating and making things

10 out of 10! I enjoy repairing and modifying equipment etc and as a kid loved taking things to bits and making other gadgets out of them.

Intellectual Curiosity and Eclecticism

Bullseye again! Since childhood I always asked "WHY"? , "How does that work"? "where does that come from"? etc and if nobody would tell me I would find out for myself one way or the other. I was always an old head on young shoulders.

I also have a wide range of interests and hobbies, am bored by the run of the mill such as most sports, especially any team games which I hate, and just because the rest of the herd do it that way I don't feel any need to comply but will follow my own light and judgement as far as I can.

Collectors/Hobbyists/Tinkerers

Again spot on! Apart from a huge collecton of knickers and panties and other female clothing I do collect other items not connected to being CD etc. I love fixing things, modifying and adapting equipment etc and am always looking for ways to improve existing apparatus etc. I am deeply into computers, not the Programming Side but the Hardware and enjoy building them for people.

Perfectionism

No! On this it falls down. I do like things to be done well and fit for their purpose but do not insist in them being perfect. I am a pragmatic person and realise that sometimes one has to accept what one gets or what one can afford etc. I do however loathe thick, stupid and boring people who think that physical strength or prowess at sports makes up for their lack of intelligence and knowledge.

Enjoy flights of fancy

Very much so. I love Science Fiction, Historical Novels etc. I will often day-dream if doing some boring and humdrum task, attending some tedious meeting etc. As a kid I would daydream in class during boring lessons such as Math. I have a very vivid imagination and love creative writing.

Loners

Hits the target again with me! I have few but very deep friends, I love my own company, detest any "Team" activities , am not in the slightest bit "tribal" . I have even been determined by some of those on-line selftests as being to an extent "schizoid" . I will always back my own judgement when I disagree with the perceived wisdom or the "party line" and will as far as is legal and prudent to do I will interpret the rules in my own way. I am not one who will do things by the book simply because someone says I must do so and respect for me has to be earned and not be reliant upon a badge on the sleeve or some job title. Obviously in work etc I have to do things their way or lose my job, but I will often do so against my will and not follow the herd. I detest "Collective" situations as I am an Individual. As an example I would never go on a Package Tour Holiday but would make my own bookings for Flights, Hotels etc and visit those places I wanted to go to, not go in a coach full of people I neither know nor care about to gawp at some so called attraction . Holidays such a "Butlins Holiday Camps" would be a torture for me.

So with one exception these citeria would seem to fit me quite well. and it is of interest that other Cds and TVs seem to fit these attributes.

Yes, I would have to say that the description would apply, as much as any generalization may.

But, what surprised me was the percentage (over 50%) of us that voted in the first catagory!

So, there must be something to it!

Even though I'm new to the forum, I've always felt that I'm among friends, and like-minded individuals I'd like to meet. I've laughed, and cried, with some of you, and been made to feel so welcome. :hugs:

Long Live Sisterhood!
