I have a question for some of the mid west girls. I have been looking into the Saugatuck Michigan area and have read that it is a very freindly and accepting area. Was curious if anyone had been to the area and what there expierience was? Would you go back? Hoping to talk a freind into going with me as he has been wanting to go out more in public but I am just not ready.

You will have fun particularly at the twice annual Transgender Weekends. The main resort is gay--not exactly transgender.

You will be welcome in any event.

Also take a look at the book "At least in the city they can hear you scream" which takes place in Saugatuck.

Where is Saugatuck? I was born and spent most of my childhood and early teens Michigan, but I've never heard of Saugatuck.

Saugatuck is in the southwest corner of the state near Holland, Michigan and north of the Indiana border. I have heard that it is very LGBT friendly.

Julia Ann,

As Jennifer stated you will find Saugatuck accepting and friendly. Many of us girls from west Michigan and beyond have been there. The Dunes is a great place, it dose get crazy busy during the summer but I always enjoy the Sunday afternoon T-Parties that start at 4:00 PM. There is also a spring and fall TG event at the Dunes.

By the way the picture in my avatar and on my profile where taken on a beach in Saugatuck.

Hugs,
Patti

I don't have an atlas handly and too lazy to google it, so if Saugatuck is near Holland, that would place it just south of Grand Rapids aboout twenty to thirty miles give or take? Or am I confusing Holland with some place else?

Saugatuck is, as far as I know, the most TG friendly city in Michigan. While it is considered the gay/lesbian mecca of the midwest, they are accepting and friendly to everyone. If you're wanting to venture out into public I can think of no better place. There are sooo many little shops to explore and discover. All the people there are used to seeing us. Go! You will have the time of your life. Be sure to check out my post in the Special Events section about the Dunes TG weekend. It was April 8-9. The next one is going to be in October. Maybe you can attend! Hugs,Tonya

You are correct Christina, its about a 40 minute trip southwest from Grand Rapids. This site shows a map and a few more details.

We always go to the Dunes Resort for the TG Weekend just across the Kalamazoo River in Douglas.

Thanks Jennifer. I toyed with the idea of moving back to Michigan once, but that is about as far as I got with the idea.

While Saugatuck seems like a good destination for my first public outing, I'm not sure the Dunes is the place for me to stay. My wife and I like things a bit more quiet and the website makes it look like anything but... Also, the TG weekends look like they could be fun too, but again, I prefer to do things with my wife and I'm not sure that the TG weekend is a good couple's outing. Anyone care to comment?

Tatyana,

You are correct the Dunes may not be the place to stay if you are looking for a quiet place to stay. There are also a couple of hotels in the area.

I been going to TG weekend with my wife for several years and we both always have a good time. We usually spend the days on our own and then go to the club at night where it is great to see old and new friends.

Thanks Patti. That does help a lot. Maybe in the future, we will make it to the TG weekend together.

Thats odd considering the University of Michigan is ranked as the top public university in the world. Where is Ohio State? Oh thats right you care more about football than actual academics.

Interesting. I seriously have no plans for a 2 week vacation in October, I am definitely starting a list with this as the first thing on it.

Celes,

If you are thinking of traveling to Saugatuck in October, make sure to include the Dunes TG weekend October 14, 15.

Wow, that would probably work perfect as the last few days of my trip if I fly. If I drive, I have to be back here on the 16th for work at 11pm. That would not be a fun drive back to central Alberta. But even if I can't make the event, I'd definitely have to check out the resort! Looks like a nice place.
