View Full Version : A big step, at least for me.

I went shopping with my Daughter (she is 28) today at Avenue and had a ball; I went in drab – I don’t have the confidence yet to go en femme. I tried on a dress and a top but told the SA that it was difficult to tell how they fit since I didn’t have a bust. She suggested I go pick out a bra, so I picked out one with fairly rigid cups and put it on, and the bra made it possible to see how the clothes were going to look. I was being watched by a woman customer when I was looking for my size bra, so I made a point to say “Ah, here we go, this one is my size” and I headed for the dressing room. Couldn’t tell whether she was amused or what.

I was really surprised that I had absolutely no inhibition about stepping out of the dressing room wearing a dress, or a top, so I could look in the full-length mirror. The SAs were very friendly and they made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was the manager who said I could put on one of their bras if I had my forms out in the car; she smiled and nodded when I held up the bra with the molded cups on my way to the dressing room. I felt totally at ease walking around the store in a dress, no wig, no makeup, obviously a man in a dress.

I ended up passing on the dress because I wasn’t crazy about the color. I went to look at what I think is the same dress but basically in blues, the two colors in the store were muted purples and sort of red and brick – looked more like fall colors than spring/summer. I did buy a bright pink top, http://www.avenue.com/clothing/Smocked-Tunic-Tee.aspx?PfId=235268&DeptId=19934&ProductTypeId=1, and some turquoise sandals http://www.avenue.com/clothing/Nynree-Stud-Sandal-Wide-Width.aspx?PfId=204470&DeptId=19969&ProductTypeId=1. I was offered 30% off if I would apply for a credit card, but when I declined the manager said she would give me the 30% off anyway because it was my first time in the store. I’m looking forward to shopping there again, only I intend to go en femme.

The outing made me feel much more confident that I can go out shopping en femme; don’t know about strolling down the mall just yet, but today was for me a giant step. The next big stumbling block is my Wife, I need to dress at home, which always causes a bit of chill in the air, and then let her know that I intend to go shopping – I’m not looking forward to that.

Good for you, Babs! Sounds like you had a great time. I love Avenue's dresses, though mine are all online purchases.

I go shopping en-femme all the time, and doing what you did, namely, walking out in boy mode wearing a dress is way more courageous, in my opinion!

I'd feel *very* uncomfortable doing that. It's one of the reasons that shopping en-femme for me is sooo much easier then when I used to skulk around in guy mode.

Happy hunting,

Diane

Barbara,

Way to go. I knew you could do it and with your daughter along for support it went well. Again, way to go.

Thank you all. I'm still having a bit of a rush when I think of the fun I had yesterday. Dilane, I don't know know about it taking courage, I really didn't even give it a thought, I couldn't get far enough back from the mirror in the dressing room so it just seemed natural to step out of the dressing room and over to one of the mirrors on the sales floor. I have to admit that the store was not very crowded, only a few other shoppers and about the only reaction that I witnessed was a few glances followed by smiles, but none of the shoppers said a word, at least none that I heard. I will add that the bra I got off the rack was extremely uncomfortable.

Babs,
It is wonderful to hear that your daughter is so supportive. I'm sure that having her with you made made the experience easier and more memorable. Hearing stories like this gives me confidence to go out myself, although I haven't tried yet.
