I am curious what age range we all fall into. I am wondering something about the mindset of some members here and have a hypothesis but I need data to see if that hypothesis is correct.

No exact age is needed. Such as for example I fall into the age range of

30-40

Please be accurate. No cute ages like "I stopped at 21" or that sort of thing. Just the real deal.

Why do I get the feeling I'm posting in "Boomer-ville" here, and that most of us here were either at Yasgur's farm at Woodstock (the original version) during the Summer of Love i.e. 1969, or else we remember it as if it were yesterday.

Yup, card-carrying Boomer here as well - I just turned 63 today, as a matter-of-fact. Suddenly, Paul McCartney's song "When I'm 64" is starting to sound a whole lot more relevant.

I am 34 (but due to serious lifelong depression and some health issues I truly feel very old, I envy those of you who are young and healthy and those who at least had a chance to feel what it is like to be young.) I have been involved in the TG community for 15 years, and started at 19.

Another thing I've noticed in our community is that the younger CDers are much more likely to be trans. Sometimes I feel like the only <20 CDer who doesn't want to transition

I noticed the same, and interestingly enough that hasn't seemed to change much in the last 15 years, at least in my experience. There were few TV or TS under 30 15 years ago, but today are plenty of TS in their 20s, but still very few "occasional" CDs. I always felt a bit like the odd man out, 15 years ago it was the age gap which didn't bother me that much per se, but today it is the lack of fellow CDs my age (even in their 30s they are not real easy to find.)

I'm 47 (no, not 47-27-37, simply 47 ;-). I know MTF's that are 18 to 80, and most that I know are older than 30. Does that mean we're not to be trusted? What happened to those 'kids' in the 60's that said never trust anyone over 30? :)

Another thing I've noticed in our community is that the younger CDers are much more likely to be trans. Sometimes I feel like the only <20 CDer who doesn't want to transition

I think there are a couple reasons for that.

Those of us in our mid to upper 30s or older, even if we were on the internet in the early to mid 90s, did not have the resources available now to investigate and find community. Many of us also began our normal male lives with families, children, careers, and living as 'we should.' It's part of the reason the trans community seems to have a lull until the kids-have-moved out years. I think if many of us were your age now, with the info and society as it is, we'd be more likely to consider transition or at least be open about it.

For the teens and 20 somethings, the internet has always been here, and with it an availability to the resources, shopping, communities, etc to make it seem like your world is bigger than a local town.

CD falls under the TG umbrella, when the reality is that we're not the same as the TS girls, no more than TS people should fall into the Gay/Lesbian labels (unless they are). When a CD interacts with a TS person, I've found an overwhelming form of over-support and encouragement to consider that I'm TS, too. (Ha, ha, difference between a CD and a TS? One year) And if so, I should start transitioning and getting on hormones and laser now, etc. It's basically a form of proselytizing and really, who doesn't want an answer to why we do this? Couple that with you guys being at an age of discovering yourself and you are very, very malleable.

And I say that because I've thought a lot about it and I'm virtually positive that if I had these resources and knowledge when I was in or just out of college, I really would have considered transitioning or at least, trying aspects of it out.

We can all learn from each other and I'm no exception, but one thing that life and the school of hard knocks have taught this "old dog" is to pick your battles, and not to sweat the small stuff. In the end, no one will care, as none of us gets out of this alive anyways - the only variable being how soon we leave this earth and by what means. Try to lighten up a bit, Kelly - that chip on your shoulder must be getting awfully heavy by now...

As for the skew in the demographics of the membership here - it is probably no more complicated than the fact that many of us old farts here are either retired or only working part-time at this point, and have way too much free time on our hands ;).

I've felt in the past, and still do to some extent, that younger people simply don't need as much support these days. When I was in my 20s I avoided all places like this, because I didn't feel the need. I grew up in a generation, and around people who were very accepting. I only joined here a few years ago out of simple curiosity, and to see if I could lend a different perspective to things.
About a month ago I searched out the younger generation (18-25), and found a chatroom where young T people chatted together. The atmosphere in that room is far far different to this site. You better have thick skin if you're going to post a picture or if you ask for support. They don't mess around when it comes to telling it like it is. They also use tinychat daily to video chat with each other. It's nice to put names to faces. They were all mostly too young and beautiful though. It was depressing. ;)

If their was a site of younger CD's/Tg's/Ts's I would gladly leave this forum and never come back. The only "chip" that's getting heavy is the dread of seeing what new insults members have here for me because I don't think like them.

Personally I think the lack of younger members is they don'/can't relate here or are just weirded out.I can say this though, I'm not the only one looking to leave here.

Wow, I would have to say that most do not look their age in the photos. Very good genetics and great makeup skills work wonders. I am 51 and most days feel 21. 21 because I love my scotch and, non US mass produced, beer. I came to the conclusion a month after I joined this forum that most of us were over 40. Children leaving the nest would explain most of the boomer's here. I remember watching about Woodstock, the first landing on the moon, Vietnam, and the assassination of John and Bobby. Holy s**t I feel old now, feeling my age. Time to go watch some Sci-Fi, TTFN.

Danielle

If their was a site of younger CD's/Tg's/Ts's I would gladly leave this forum and never come back. Just today I was called a "religious fanatic" because I posted a link from tomshardware.com about a study done on Apple fans. Seems I struck a chord by posting something not pro-apple/Linux.

Personally I think the lack of younger members is they don'/can't relate here or are just weirded out.I can say this though, I'm not the only one looking to leave here.

Not to worry, I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and love both MS/PC and Apple/MAC. There are very opinionated people who are on all 3 sides of the computer wars, PC/MAC/Linux (Unix doesn't count as a MAC is BSD - Unix underpinnings with a cool GUI). I would guess you really did hit a nerve but don't take it to heart. Most everyone here is quite nice. When they give advice you must realize that advice = experience. Experience, and advice, comes from stepping on your own toes, realizing what you did, and learning from that faux pas.
If you feel the need to go elsewhere then that is your choice. Personally I am very glad to have grown up in the era I did. High school is quite a bit different, now, than it was in the 70's. The only advice I can give you - us older farts saw the world from rose colored glasses compared to what the younger generations see now. Lightning fast communications, cell phones, portable digital video cameras, PCs/MACs, satellite coverage in real time for news, I can see where all of the world events for the past 10 - 15 years can get depressing. Of course what you see now has been happening for centuries, just better weapons now. War for religion, resources, hatred, politics, it's all nothing new. Just ask those of us who remember the "Cold War", Cuba, and nuclear missiles. It's the same s**t, different generation. If you do stay, I hope you find that not everyone is so opinionated where we can't learn something new. I would bet you have better makeup advice than I do and better fashion sense too. I am still learning new things every day. I hope to learn a thing or two from our younger members, TTFN.

I'm 50. But if you ask, I never said it. After all, a lady never tells!

I've been at it for 38 years. I don't feel like an "old fart", I work every day, and I too am a certified network engineer. I have a cell phone, a very speedy computer, flush toilets, and the whole works. I think that for the most part, the miscommunication between the older and the younger crossdressers is fabricated by the younger ones simply because they want to hang on to some kind of personal angst that older folks "just don't understand". Spare me. Just because you're younger than some of us doesn't mean we don't have the same cares, problems, hurdles, or whatever. Young folks always think they're cooler than older folks, ignoring the fact that we invented cool long before they were even born. We get panged because we grew up in an era before the internet. But just remember: we invented the internet. And cell phones. And electric music. And the list goes on.

Some members here could do well to drop the high horse and remember that we're all in this together.

now i have enjoyed dressing most of my life.. but as i got older i found i got were being seen dressed didn't upset me like it did when i was younger. I was always afraid of what someone would say or think, now that i am older it makes me mad that i didn't realize earlier that it really doesn't matter what others think. I missed out on a lot of dressing and going out due to that frame of mind. Is that why most of us here are older???

Some quick stats:

Up to post 115, we have 96 people who actually posted their ages, a few people who related their age only to things like dirt or the Big Bang and a couple of people who seemed to mistake this thread for an extension of pcmacflamewar.com

If someone gave a range, I assumed that their age was in the middle of the range.

The mean age so far is (drum roll)

50.98 years.

The median age so far is

53 years

All told, we've lived a total of 4894 years. If we were a single person we would have been born at the end of the first Egyptian dynasty, during the rule of King Menes, 300 years before the great pyramids were built.

:2c: Put one more in the 60+/ - - - - column.

Note. The minuses represent 10 years each, which are to be subtracted from the chronological age because life now "begins at 60!" It's mind over matter really.

(Poem)
Is everyone's life really that different,
or is there a thread that connects us all?
The experiences we have seem oddly connected,
you'll understand my friend at the end of the long haul.

You say to yourself "What a coincidence"
you're asking yourself "Is this just a clue"
All things that have happened before this moment,
are connected correctly ...spooky, but true!

To get to a place that you want to be,
set your thoughts on it and then magically...
This place in your mind suddenly appears,
as long as you're not just plain insincere.

It's mind over matter at work in your life,
irony and destiny but hopefully not strife.
Mind over matter is a powerful tool,
use it correctly and follow the rules.

You've got to know where you are trying to go,
you've got to know why or the answer is no.
But all things are possible through mind in this life,
from money & fame to the spiritual life.

Just decide on the things you want as your goal,
use mind over matter and bring shape to the whole.
You'll see life's connections in all that you do,
re-living the future ...it's like déjÃ* vu.

...But you've got to hold on to that feeling inside,
of wanting and striving and direction and pride,
or mind over matter becomes words on a page,
and life in this miracle becomes lines on the stage. :daydreaming:

Wow, thanks for the graph, Engendered.

In post #112 Eryn came up with a mean age of 51 and a median age of 53. I'm providing a percentage by decade of all the people who have given their ages, for those of you who prefer numbers to graphs.

So far there are 150 posts. Subtract the 15 discussion posts where no age was given, or the age given is not definitive (too cryptic lol) and this leaves 135 responses. Sorry Karren & Rianna, your results aren't in here. Eluuzion, I put you in the lower end of your given range.

18-19: (4) - 3%
20-29: (8) - 6%
30-39: (20) - 15%
40-49: (21) - 16%
50-59: (38) - 28%
60-69: (37) - 27%
70-79: (6) - 4%
80-89 (1) - 1%

The bell curve is indeed lopsided to the right. I wonder if there are more people who do CDress in their 50s and 60s, or if there are just more people in this age group who come here simply because they are more likely to have more free time on their hands (kids are grown and the careers are established).

I have to assume that you find
I am at a palindromic age. Given the evidence from my other postings you should be able to work out which. too cryptic, so I'll put it another way. As I'm not yet over the century, the palindromic ages are

11
22
33
44
55
66
77
88
99

In my other posts, I mention some of my earliest memories of dysphoria being around 47 years ago - so that excludes everything from 11 to 44
I also mention that I was about 8 years old at the time so that excludes everything form 66 to 99.

I still leave it to the reader to work out what is left.

It is an interesting demographic, but when thinking of skew and bias and such, are people who are older more likely to respond? This would present a bias, so as with all this stuff we need to be careful how we present data... some younger members (well one I think) suggested this proved why they felt uncomfortable about aspects of the site, so presenting a justification. But if it is true, this does raise a lot of questions about the nature of the site, it's appeal, etc..

I am with Karren on this... we are of both of similar age (from previous posts)... sometimes it's good to know one is in the bigger bit of the bell curve rather than an outlier! Though I think the outliers rock!

Or could an alternative explanation be that those whose age qualifies them for the Young Members' Forum find more in that forum to interest them than in the main MtF forum? In the same way that if I have to make a choice between Safe Haven and the more public areas, I will tend to go for Safe Haven.

I wonder if there are more people who do CDress in their 50s and 60s, or if...

This is purely anecdotal but when you consider the answers of members here to the query "when did you start..." there's a whole lotta 'since I was a kid.' There are definitely other socio-generational differences that lead to a higher proportion of the older population actively participating on the forum(s), but I'd wager a bet that a large random study of males who have crossdressed would be pretty evenly spread out.

With regards to those who crossdress regularly, probably a different story for the same reasons as forum participation.

btw, I love you Reine. I love every single one of your posts. :)

While the age group we my fall under my have an impact on our mindset of the way we respond to post on this site I feel where we live must also have am impact. Just as an example in politics where we live has determined who we vote for and this seems to have been generally the same for a very long time. Perhaps someone with more time than I should attempt to see if this is true in our commuity too

Nice one Kendra! I am very into social science research and although I may seem to be "poopooing" the outcome of this thread it is with good intention... the thread throws up some good data, but we then need to challenge what that data says, as all research is fundamentally biased by its design. I have always wanted to to do some research into "us lot" and this site presents a great population/sample... but I am always bowled over by the diversity. I admit to being suprised by the demographic, but then I wan to know why this demographic? is this representative of the population or is this representative of those who choose to participate in this thread?

So age and other factors come into play... As a natural researcher, I would love to do the definitive study!

I'm 48. I'm honestly surprised at the number of folks over 50. I've wondered if I will want to keep doing this as I get older, but seeing how great you girls looks gives me hope. :)

I agree with the others that free time is probably a large reason why the ages skew towards older girls. There might also be a certain amount of wtf attitude that we adopt as we get older that makes us not care about being out. I was terrified of being discovered when I was younger, and now I really don't care. At 48, I know who I am, and that can't be threatened anymore by someone else's reaction to what I do.

Sophie, I agree. There may be a generational thing here. I'll bet if we had taken this poll 40-50 years ago, there might have been even more skewness toward "more mature" ladies. Back then society was less accepting and we were less aware of what it meant to be transgender -- or were more repressed about it. My hat is off to our younger sisters who are aware of who they are now and express it!

Had I known then what I know now, my life might have been quite different! :daydreaming:

I admit to being suprised by the demographic, but then I wan to know why this demographic? is this representative of the population or is this representative of those who choose to participate in this thread?

!

What ever results can be concluded from all the responces to this thread it can only be representive of those who choose to participate in this thread. As for my Political map I am not trying to suggest at all we compare our political preferances but I use it to show that the very heavily populated areas of the US just by virtue of their density can make life in general so much different than in other parts of the country.

Even though I live in Oklahoma I live in the City where I assume most of us dress and appear like the average person does in most other larger cities. I have to look very long and hard to find anyone wearing boots and a cowboy hat. Drive just 20 minutes in any direction from where I live and about all you see are dudes in pickup trucks with gun racks wearing boots and cowboy hats. There has got to be a connection there somewhere that has more to do with the "norm" for the area and not just about their age.

I can see where the OP's question is heading and it seem rather obivious from the post so far that the difference between age groups here and their mindset might just have something to do with the fact those of us who are older lived thru years and remember well when tollorance of everthing was not taught the way it is today thus shaping our mindset and making it difficult for us to become as open about things as the younger generation is.

I'll bet if we had taken this poll 40-50 years ago, there might have been even more skewness toward "more mature" ladies. :

Claire that would be a great question to have answered. I might just take that bet simply because I think it has been the loss of the average female looking extremely feminine in the last 50 years which has caused some of us to pursue it in our dressing. I personally have always wondered if the 55 and over age group of CD's has so much more interest in garter belts and stocking simply because we grew up seeing our mothers and females everywere wearing them daily. Pantyhose did not become popular till the mid 60's and it seems there are more CD's under 50 who love pantyhose rather than stockings.

Sorry I don't mean to hijack this thread about just posting age.

When I was 23 nothing like this existed... no internet... no social networking... no mobile phones... as a "potential" CD we were in the dark, struggling to figure things out. The world is now very different. So why is this thread dominated by us older folk? Is it because we have finally found our voice? After decades in the wilderness? I think for me this might be the case...

So here I am in the big 50s bracket... I have always looked younger than I am, but make-up and hair (and some nice clothes) add another dimension!

The sheer diversity of the demographic that use this site never ceases to astound me.
I would love to see some social science research on us crossdressers. Somebody do it!

Getting so old that it took the better part of the week to answer.

The mean age so far is (drum roll)

50.98 years.

I don't get called mean too often, but I am 50.

Reine I find the results so far interesting. Over half the responders sit in age block 50-69. What would now interest me is to see were the closet dressers fall. is there a correlation? Have the administrators ever worked out the age profile. Didn't we all put our DOB when we joined? You've got me thinking and that doesn't happen often!

Helen, I don't think it's possible to query the database for such results. Even then, when closeted CDers join a forum, many are likely to associate fictitious ages and locations with their registration email accounts in order to protect their privacy.

At this point n=203. We've lived a total of 10,075 years, which means that if we were a single person we would have been born at the end of the last glacial period and would have witnessed the rise of agriculture.

Our mean age is 49.63 years and our median age is 52 years, so it seems that those stats have settled down to solid values.

Every age from 18 to 80 is represented at least once except 69, 73, and 78. Above 80 there is a five year gap and then an 86-year-old. You go, girl!

The most-represented age is 60, with 9 responses. 51, 63, and 64 have 7 responses each.

There is definitely a large number of us 45-67 ladies out there (124), but there is also a healthy representation in the 18-44 group (67). 12 of us are over 67, but I'll bet that they look and act much younger than that.

One odd thing I noticed was that many of us referred to our next higher age in our posts, as in "I'm 35, but I'll be 36 next month." In these cases I used the age the person was right when they made the post.

The other interesting demographic hinted at in this thread is a rough estimate of how many people are actually active in the forums. Since most people posted uniquely the number of active users seems to be well over 200.

Thanks for the awesome analysis! :)

I don't know if you've ever noticed the stats on the index page. As of right now, there are 28,298 registered members. There are 6,753 active members who have logged into this site within the last 3 months, whether or not they've posted. :)

I've seen those stats, but a logon 90 days ago doesn't seem very active. It would be interesting to know the number of people who have logged on in a shorter term, say a week.

When i used "active" in my post above I meant people who were participating most every day. Even so, 200 is simply a lower bound since I see many folks posting elsewhere who didn't post to this thread.

Do you have any idea of what the rate of new members is? Judging from the introductions I get the sense that it's on the order of 10-20 per day. Of course, this is probably a topic for a different thread...

Well, this thread is about statistics, really. I would like to know how often each of the 6,753 have logged in within the last 3 months. It would seem silly to go through the trouble of registering if someone doesn't plan on sticking around more than once.

So, if there are over 10 new members daily, this would mean about 1,000 in three months. If someone (hint hint) ever feels energetic, she could go through our member list and chart dates joined vs. number of posts, and last visit. Now THAT would be interesting. :)

I've no idea if such data can be accumulated through the site data base.

With GOOD REASON, Reine! What good would it do telling folks I'm actually 85? No one would believe it anyway!

Well, just for a taste, I selected Community/Member List, and sorted by Last Visit, then I paged through until I found someone whose last activity was 24 hours ago. That was at the bottom of page 26, so it looks as though 1300 discrete members have logged on in the last 24 hours. Quite a number!
